Re: Potential CUE strike

The University of California and the Coalition of University Employees (CUE) have been negotiating for over two years to get a first contract. Although the University believes the parties are close to completion, CUE has called for actions including a surprise one-day strike and sick-outs in support of its bargaining position. Such actions may interrupt work, congest traffic patterns and cause other related problems.

Despite these impending actions, the University continues to bargain in good faith with CUE. The University is trying hard to reach agreement with the union and very few matters are left to resolve. The University will continue to post bargaining updates on the web at:
http://www.ucop.edu/humres/labor/cxhome.html

If a strike occurs, we can expect to experience some inconveniences such as reduced bus service and delayed deliveries. At the same time, we have a responsibility to students, their parents, and to the citizens who support this institution to sustain our institutional and instructional missions. The University believes that the recently called for strike action is not lawful. All faculty, staff, academic and student employees are expected to meet their normal obligations to the University in the event of a strike. Those who do not, will not be paid unless prior approval for a legitimate absence has been granted. Unapproved absences may also be cause for disciplinary action.

In the event of a strike, all offices will remain open to ensure that this action by some members of our campus community will not prevent others from conducting business as usual. TAPS will operate all available campus transit vehicles to accommodate the anticipated demand for shuttle services should the Santa Cruz Metro (SCMTD) buses refuse to travel onto campus. As in the past, all Route 1 and 12 buses will load and unload passengers at transit stops adjacent to the Main Entrance on Bay and High Streets, and passengers will walk onto the campus to board Day Shuttles. When additional information is made available as to the date of the strike or sick outs, the campus will be alerted immediately.
