Re: Assistant Chancellor Julia Armstrong-Zwart leaving campus

Dear Campus Colleagues:

This is to inform you that Julia Armstrong-Zwart, assistant chancellor for human resources and assistant vice chancellor for faculty relations has announced her decision to leave UC Santa Cruz. The day-to-day operations of Academic Human Resources, Staff Human Resources, EEO/Affirmative Action and Title IX will continue under the very capable direction of Directors Barbara Brogan, Willeen McQuitta, Patti Hiramoto and Title IX Officer Rita Walker, respectively. Further information regarding management realignments will be addressed in a separate memorandum within the next few days.

We will miss Julia's thoughtful counsel, and we wish her the very best in her new endeavors. During her nearly 20 years at UC Santa Cruz, Julia has made broad and significant contributions in positions at this campus, advising several chancellors and executive vice chancellors on faculty relations, academic and staff human resources, and campus welfare. Her first position at UCSC in 1981 was Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Matters of Informal Grievance and Affirmative Action and later as the campus' first Ombudsman. In 1983 she stepped down as Ombudsman to assume the position of Assistant Academic Vice Chancellor for Faculty Relations, continuing to serve as Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Affirmative Action. In addition to her work as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Faculty Relations, she has served as Assistant Chancellor for Human Resources since 1991, with responsibility for the offices of Academic Human Resources, EEO/Affirmative Action, Labor Relations, Staff Human Resources, and Title IX.

In addition to her dedicated service to UCSC, Julia has frequently been called upon to play key roles in University-wide initiatives and committees on issues of faculty welfare, affirmative action, diversity, the University of California Retirement System, and much more.

Please join us in thanking Julia for her outstanding service to this campus and to the University of California.

John B. Simpson
Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor
