Re: Death of former Admissions dean Joe Allen
Members of the Campus Community,
Even though many of you may already have learned of this tragic news, I wanted to
send out a brief note about the passing last week of Joe Allen, the longtime head
of admissions here at UCSC.
Unlike some of you, I didn't work with Joe during his 20 years at UCSC: two decades
of service that included the job that brought him to campus (student activities coordinator
for Porter College) and the position he held before leaving UCSC in 1993 (dean of
admissions). And it would certainly be inaccurate to say that I replaced him as head
of our admissions operation. No one could replace Joe.
His loss will be felt beyond UCSC and beyond the University of Southern California,
where he served as dean of admissions and financial aid and the vice provost for
enrollment after his years on our campus.
Those of you who worked with him here and those of us who worked with him in the
field of collegiate admissions know what a void Joe's passing has left: He was a
special leader who was committed to providing Californians from all backgrounds with
access and opportunity to higher education.
Much as been written about Joe since he died, and the following Currents web site
includes links to a few of those tributes:

Please join me in conveying heartfelt sympathy to Joe's family and to his many, many
friends.
Sincerely,
Michael Thompson
Associate Vice Chancellor
