This summary highlights media placements members of the UCSC community have garnered during the month of April 2008.

National and international

News coverage of the Grateful Dead's donation of their archives to UC Santa Cruz was extensive, with the story reported in hundreds of newspapers and broadcast outlets across the country, plus the UK, France, and Canada. Coverage included a front-page feature story in the San Francisco Chronicle, two front-page articles in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, a feature in the San Jose Mercury News, as well as stories by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, BBC News, AP, Reuters, and major San Francisco television stations (see Currents story). . . . Research by economist Rob Fairlie about immigrant and native-born children attending private schools was cited in an editorial in the New York Times. . . . Research on the geology of the Tibetan Plateau by Xixi Zhao, Peter Lippert, Robert Coe, and their collaborators was covered by Science News, Science Daily, Space Daily, Thaindian, Indo-Asian News Service, and UPI (see Currents story). . . . Economist Lori Kletzer was quoted in a Congressional Quarterly Weekly article about churning and upheaval in the U.S. labor market. . . . Several UCSC astronomers were featured in an article in Science News magazine about new models of galaxy formation, including Piero Madau, Sandra Faber, and Jason Prochaska. Research on long-term data storage led by computer scientists Ethan Miller, Mark Storer, and Kevin Greenan was covered on technology news sites TG Daily, Slashdot, and Blocks and Files (see Currents story). . . . USNews.com is the latest publication to pick up on the work by economist Ricard Gil about the reason movie theaters charge so much for popcorn (see Currents story). . . . Marc Mangel, professor of applied math and statistics, was quoted in a story on ClimateWire about Antarctic krill. . . . Collaborative research by anthropology's Judith Habicht-Mauche and environmental toxicology's Russ Flegal was the subject of a feature story in American Archaeology magazine. Habicht-Mauche, who studies the pottery of the Rio Grande region, has teamed up with Flegal to trace the origins of lead ore used in ceramic glazes that go back to the 1400s. . . . Physicist Anthony Aguirre was quoted in an article about speculative models of "bubble universes" in New Scientist magazine. . . . Molecular biologist Sofie Salama was featured in a Science News article about the role of RNA molecules in the development of the human brain. . . . Solar Today magazine ran a story about research by chemist Jin Zhang on nanotech materials for solar cells. . . . The Connecticut Post noted that professor of Italian and comparative literature Deanna Shemek was part of an interdisciplinary panel of nationally recognized scholars of ancient Italian culture who participated in a symposium at Fairfield University. . . . The Wall Street Journal, New York Sun, and Library Journal published reviews of humanities professor Jerome Neu's book, Sticks and Stones: The Philosophy of Insults, which explores the nature, purpose, and ultimate effect of insults. . . . The Arizona Daily Star raved about a performance by theater arts assistant professor Patty Gallagher at the Rogue Theater, describing her as work as "poetry in motion" and "a joy to watch." . . . Physicist Alan Litke's research on the neurology of vision was the focus of the cover story in the January/February issue of the particle physics magazine Symmetry. . . . Research on protein synthesis by molecular biologist Harry Noller and his collaborators was featured on PhysOrg.com. . . . A Seattle Post-Intelligencer writer cited economist Mike Dooley's work in a column about the future of the U.S. dollar. . . . A critic from England's Classical Guitar Magazine reviewed music lecturer Mesut Ozgen's multimedia concert DVD, New Dimensions in Classical Guitar, calling it "the finest music DVD ever to have come my way." . . . The Charleston Post and Courier ran a feature story about history of consciousness professor Angela Davis, who spoke at the College of Charleston about women, race and capitalism.

State and regional

In an op-ed published in the San Francisco Chronicle, Brad Olsen of education called for changes that would give classroom teachers more say regarding the direction of education reform. . . . Arboretum director Daniel Harder, still in the media spotlight since weighing in on state plans to eradicate the light brown apple moth, was quoted in the San Jose Mercury News, Santa Cruz Sentinel, Salinas Californian, and Monterey County Herald. . . . Glenn Stewart, a biologist with the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, was quoted in a San Jose Mercury News story about the peregrine falcons nesting on the San Jose City Hall building. . . . An article in the Mountain View Voice about plans for the NASA Research Park included quotes from William Berry, managing director of the Affiliated Research Center.

Local

The Santa Cruz Sentinel tapped political scientist Sheldon Kamieniecki for analysis before the Pennsylvania primary. . . . Bill Domhoff of psychology fielded numerous media calls about his research on dreams, including inquires from the Santa Cruz Sentinel, KUSP Radio, and Bruce Bratton of KZSC Radio. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about UCSC alumnus and Art Department lecturer Noah Buchanan who just completed two 11-foot tall commissioned paintings that will soon reside in a new Wisconsin church built in the classic Renaissance style. . . . Economist Michael Hutchison was featured in a lengthy Q&A that appeared in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Hutchison discussed the subprime mortgage crisis and explained the interconnections between the global economy and the U.S. economy. The article was subsequently reprinted in the Santa Cruz Record, the region's weekly legal and business newspaper. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported that John Mock, UCSC lecturer in Hindi and Urdu languages, has launched a campaign to fund the removal of landmines in Afghanistan via the mountaineering community (see Currents story.) . . . Hydrogeologist Andrew Fisher was quoted in a story in the Watsonville Register-Pajaronian about an upcoming water forum at which he will speak. . . . Research on the chinook salmon population by fisheries biologist Rachel Barnett-Johnson was covered in the Watsonville Register-Pajaronian and the Daily Green. . . . Lora Bartlett of education appeared on KUSP's Talk of the Bay program to discuss the phenomenon of school districts across the state hiring teachers from the Philippines and other countries. Bartlett was also interviewed by KZSZ Radio about budget cuts in education.
