This summary highlights media placements members of the UCSC community have garnered during the month of November 2007.

National and international

The December issue of National Geographic magazine includes a feature story on albatrosses with quotes from biologist Scott Shaffer and (in the online version) a photo of graduate student Michelle Antolos Kappes weighing an albatross chick. Shaffer was also featured in a story on NPR's Day to Day about his seabird research on Palmyra Island. . . . Economist Robert Fairlie was quoted in a BusinessWeek story about the link between home values and entrepreneurship as capital dries up in the wake of the mortgage loan crisis. . . . A new book coauthored by Jonathan Fox of Latin American and Latino studies made headlines in Mexico City, where three major dailies, Reform, La Jornada, and Universal, covered news of the publication. . . . Anthropologist Nate Dominy's latest research was featured in a video segment produced by ScienCentral News and distributed to broadcast outlets across the country. A story also appeared on their online news site. . . . An article in New Scientist magazine about a monster black hole includes a quote from astrophysicist Stan Woosley. . . . Division of Social Sciences dean Sheldon Kamieniecki had the final word in a lengthy article in the Chronicle of Higher Education about Al Gore's Nobel Peace Prize for his work on climate change. The honor implicitly recognizes the contributions of university scientists whose research fostered understanding of climate change, and it may highlight campus commitments to combat global warming. . . . Research on retinal nerve cells by physicist Alan Litke was featured in Technology Review and Science News magazines. . . . Research by psychology's Campbell Leaper was featured in an Education Week article about how parents influence their sons' and daughters' interest in math and science. . . . Psychology lecturer Don Saposnek was interviewed by OK! Magazine for a story about the Britney Spears’ custody dispute. He discussed the effects of high-conflict custody situations on children. . . . Glaciologist Slawek Tulaczyk was quoted in an article about the glaciers on Mt. Shasta in the Mail Tribune of Southern Oregon.

State and regional

An article in the San Francisco Chronicle on Comet Holmes featured quotes from astronomer Joseph Miller. . . . The San Jose Mercury News and the Los Gatos Weekly Times ran stories about the role of graduate student Adelia Barber in the denial of a logging permit for the San Jose Water Company. . . . An article in the Sacramento Bee about the melting Arctic sea ice featured climate scientist Lisa Sloan and former graduate student Jacob Sewall. . . . Ocean scientist Raphael Kudela was a guest on a local call-in program on San Francisco public radio station KALW to discuss the health of the oceans. . . . Biologist Mark Carr was featured on KQED Radio's Quest program in a segment on the science of protecting sea life. And Carr was quoted in a story about kelp forests in the Salinas Californian. . . . Carrol Moran of the Educational Partnership Center was featured in an article in the Salinas Californian about parent participants in an EPC program designed to help them encourage their children to prepare for college.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a front page story about research at Lick Observatory, with quotes from astronomers Steven Vogt, Michael Bolte, Remington Stone, and Chancellor George Blumenthal. Vogt was also quoted in a subsequent Sentinel story about his team's discovery of a record fifth planet orbiting a distant star. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel and Metro Santa Cruz published feature stories about history professor Dana Frank and her new book Local Girl Makes History. . . . Seismologist Susan Schwartz was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel story about the magnitude 5.6 earthquake on October 27. . . . Metro Santa Cruz ran a story about graduate student Hoyt Peckham's research on loggerhead turtles. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported that assistant professor of film and digital media L. S. Kim contributed an article about the impact of feminists on mainstream media to a special 35th anniversary edition of Ms. magazine. . . . Arboretum director Daniel Harder was featured in an article in the Santa Cruz Good Times about efforts to control the light brown apple moth. . . . Metro Santa Cruz ran a story about music professor and conductor Nicole Paiement noting that she "continues her streak of innovative programming." . . . UCSC Women's Center director Roberta Valdez was quoted in the Santa Cruz Good Times for a story about a campus appearance by alumna author bell hooks. . . . Literature professor H. Marshall Leicester was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article about horror films and the dynamics of fear. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel announced the publication of interviews with Jim Pepper, emeritus professor of environmental studies, and Donna Haraway, professor of history of consciousness and feminist studies, by the UCSC Library's Regional History Project. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about UCSC alumna and violinist Rebecca Jackson, who will direct the Santa Cruz Chamber Players in the opening concert of their 29th season.
