This summary highlights media placements members of the UCSC community have garnered during the month of June 2007.

National and international

Major media outlets, including Money, Forbes, BusinessWeek, the New York Daily News, CNN Money, and the Washington Post, jumped to cover the latest in a series of Kauffman Foundation reports on entrepreneurship by economist Rob Fairlie. . . . Eileen Zurbriggen of psychology had the last word in a lengthy Associated Press article about the impacts of today’s “porn-driven” culture on young women. The widely circulated story appeared in the Washington Post, New Jersey’s Star-Ledger, on CNN.com, The Pantagraph of Bloomington, Illinois, and The Star of South Africa. . . . Research led by electrical engineer Holger Schmidt demonstrating atomic spectroscopy on a chip was covered by Laser Focus World, Scientific American.com, Photonics.com, Nanotechwire.com, Phonotics Online, and Science Daily. . . . Psychologist Elliot Aronson’s new book got a nice plug in a Newsweek column by Sharon Begley. . . . In an article about grassroots activists' involvement in Democratic Party politics, In These Times cited work by research professor Bill Domhoff of psychology and sociology. . . . Marine biologist Vicki Pearse was featured in stories in the Columbus Dispatch, UPI wire service, FoxNews.com, and LiveScience.com about a new species of sea anemone she discovered that lives on whale carcasses. . . . The New York Times reviewed a performance by Ben Munisteri Dance Projects of a new work titled Terra Nova, citing the contributions of assistant theater arts professor Ted Warburton and Digital Arts and New Media (DANM) alumnus Timothy Jordan. . . . A Seattle Times columnist, fretting about his teenage son becoming a driver, cited reassuring fatality statistics evaluated by sociology instructor Mike Males, who “thinks grown-ups load a lot of undeserved baggage onto teens.” . . . A New York Times story about notable commencement speakers around the country included an excerpt from a speech given by history of consciousness professor Angela Davis at Grinnell College. The Des Moines Register ran an article about Davis's commencement address at Grinnell. . . . Film and digital media professor Chip Lord contributed a Top Ten piece to the May 2007 issue of ArtForum. . . . A New Scientist magazine story about a theory that prehistoric inhabitants of North America were wiped out by a catastrophic comet impact included quotes from paleontologist Paul Koch. . . . Sean Swezey of the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems has developed promising new ways to protect organic strawberries from lygus bugs, and his work was featured recently in Western Farm Press. And news of the campus’s celebration of 40 years at the forefront of sustainable agriculture was picked up by Sustainable Food News. . . . Connell O'Donovan, program manager for Summer Session, was quoted at length in an article in the Salt Lake Tribune about the 30th anniversary celebration of the founding of Affirmation, a support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Mormons.

State and regional

The San Francisco Chronicle quoted associate professor of music Karlton Hester for an article about the intersection of jazz, religion, and spirituality. . . . Biologist Glenn Stewart was featured in media coverage of the peregrine falcons released at Long Marine Laboratory, including stories in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, San Jose Mercury News, KSBW-TV, KPIX-TV, and KGO-TV.

Local

Climate researcher Lisa Sloan discussed climate change in interviews on KZSC Radio and KUSP Radio's Talk of the Bay program. . . . Ann Pace, assistant director of the Center for Biomolecular Science & Engineering, was interviewed on KSBW-TV (Ch. 8) and quoted in the Santa Cruz Sentinel about funding for a stem cell research facility at UCSC, which was also covered by the San Jose Mercury News. . . . Jim Leap, manager of the UCSC Farm, was profiled in the Santa Cruz Sentinel in a story that highlighted his commitment to sustainable agriculture. . . . Astronomer Greg Laughlin was quoted in a Monterey Herald story about the origin and meaning of the expression "blue moon." . . . The Santa Cruz Good Times described an exhibit created by students in assistant art professor Elliot Anderson’s Intro to Computer Art class, on display at the downtown Museum of Art and History. . . . The Monterey Herald noted that music lecturer Mesut Ozgen, a guitar faculty member at UCSC since 1998, has long been a strong advocate of new music. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel and the Good Times ran a story on “Emergence 2007,” the year-end public exhibition of the Digital Arts and New Media (DANM) graduate program. KSBW-TV also covered the story. Metro Santa Cruz ran a story about the second graduating class of the DANM program, quoting program manager Felicia Rice.
