Earth scientist James Zachos was quoted in a Los Angeles Times story, which also ran in the San Francisco Chronicle, New Jersey Star-Ledger, and other newspapers, about the causes of a prehistoric global warming event. . . . Economist Lori Kletzer was interviewed by columnist Rick Wartzman of the Los Angeles Times for a column on globalization and its impact on California. . . . Astronomers Jean Brodie and Raja Guhathakurta were quoted in a San Francisco Chronicle story about a study of the future merger of the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies. . . . The San Francisco Chronicle covered the recent work of anthropology's Nate Dominy and grad student Justin Yeakel, who are investigating the diet of early human ancestors. . . . The Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group's web cams on falcon nests in San Francisco and San Jose continue to get news coverage, including a story featuring researcher Brian Latta in the San Jose Mercury News and one featuring researcher Janet Linthicum on KQED Radio's California Report and on NPR stations nationally. . . . Ocean scientists Raphael Kudela and Mary Silver were featured in coverage of the harmful algal bloom in Monterey Bay by the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Monterey County Herald, Salinas Californian, and local newscasts on KSBW and KPIX-TV. And Mary Silver was featured in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article about research on the oceans' ability to absorb and store excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. . . . Don Rothman, senior writing lecturer and founding director of UCSC’s Central California Writing Project, contributed an op-ed to the Santa Cruz Sentinel about the Virginia Tech tragedy. . . .
