An opinion piece by biologist Terrie Williams on the Endangered
Species Act, sea otters, and the value of wildlife ran in USA Today.
. . . Sociology's Mike Males appeared on CNN's NewsNight with
Aaron Brown to discuss new research on the findings regarding the
drug habits of baby boomers. Males was also quoted by the Indo-Asian News
Service, which picked up the story. . . . India West and the international
weekly newspaper India Abroad ran feature storis on assistant professor
of music Dard Neuman, holder of the Kamil and Talat Hasan Endowed
Chair in Classical Indian Music, detailing his plans for promoting Indian
music and culture at UCSC. . . . Research by geophysicist Steven Ward
was cited in an article about tsunamis in New Scientist magazine.
. . . Economist Robert Fairlie was quoted in a Houston Chronicle
story about Latino business startups. . . . Astronomer Sandra Faber
and physicist Joel Primack were featured in a story about cosmology
and religion in Science & Spirit magazine. . . . The Deseret
Morning News noted that history of consciousness professor Angela
Davis would be speaking at a philosophy conference in Salt Lake City.
. . . An Associated Press story deconstructing the withdrawal of Supreme
Court nominee Harriet Miers quoted politics professor Dan Wirls.
. . . Research on the source of lead contamination in chocolate by environmental
toxicologists Charley Rankin, Russell Flegal, and others
was covered in Science News magazine and the Chicago Tribune.
. . . Michael Riordan, adjunct professor of physics, was quoted
in a story in the Newark Star-Ledger about the history and future
of Bell Labs. . . . Time magazine interviewed a number of people
on campus for its story about the nationwide student movement to help
preserve family farming by serving locally grown food in campus dining
halls. . . . An article in New Scientist magazine about a NASA
proposal for how to deflect an Earth-bound asteroid included a quote from
Erik Asphaug, associate professor of Earth sciences. . . . National
Public Radio interviewed film expert B. Ruby Rich of community
studies about the new Palestinian movie Paradise Now, which explores
the motives of suicide bombers. . . . A story on Physorg.com about
research on Archaea (a type of microorganism) featured Todd Lowe,
assistant professor of biomolecular engineering, and Chad Saltikov,
assistant professor of environmental toxicology. . . . Oregon's Register-Guard
noted that soprano Maria Jette tracked down UCSC music lecturer Irene
Herrmann, the executrix of author/composer Paul Bowles's musical estate,
in search of rare material to perform in concert. . . . Physicist Robert
Johnson was quoted in a story on Space Daily about the detector
his group built for NASA's GLAST telescope. . . . James Zachos,
professor of Earth sciences, was featured in a story on Mongabay.com
about an episode of extreme climate change 55 million years ago.
State and regional
Lisa Sloan, professor of Earth sciences, and postdoctoral researcher
Lara Kueppers were interviewed about their research on the effects
of climate change on California's oak woodlands by KPIX TV, KQED Radio,
and KGO Radio, as well as the Santa Cruz Sentinel and San Jose
Mercury News. AP and UPI wire stories about their work ran on numerous
web sites, including the San Diego Union-Tribune, News Factor Network,
Top Tech News, Monsters and Critics, and others. . . . Assistant professor
of theater arts Patty Gallagher was quoted in a San Jose Mercury
News article about a new Cirque du Soleil show that pays homage to
clowns.
Local
The Santa Cruz Sentinel announced that literature lecturer Charles
Atkinson has been awarded a $1,000 prize as winner of The Sow's
Ear Poetry Review annual chapbook competition. . . . A new partnership
between UCSC and Los Alamos National Laboratory was covered in the Santa
Cruz Sentinel and Salinas Californian, with quotes from computer
scientist Darrell Long. . . . The Register-Pajaronian covered
a visit by Harvard physicist Lisa Randall to Watsonville High School,
sponsored by Arts & Lectures, to help celebrate the investiture of
Chancellor Denton. . . . The Register-Pajaronian ran a story
on the $195,452 grant awarded to professor of English and comparative
literature Murray Baumgarten from the National Endowment for the
Humanities to fund a summer institute for college and university teachers
in Venice, Italy. City on a Hill interviewed Baumgarten for a story
about the grant. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a feature story
on Todd Newberry, professor emeritus of biology, and his new book,
The Ardent Birder. . . . Geologist Gary Griggs was quoted
in a Santa Cruz Sentinel story about his new book on the coastal
geology of California, which was also featured in the Monterey Herald.
Griggs was also quoted in a Sentinel story about renewed funding
for the Center for Integrated Marine Technologies. . . . A Santa Cruz
Sentinel story about the endangered Santa Cruz long-toed salamander
included quotes from biology graduate student Antonia D'Amore.
. . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel praised the unique and unexpected
pleasures of the student productions presented by the Theater
Arts Department in an article about a recent UCSC theater performance.
