National and international
Economist Rob Fairlie's work with the Kauffman Foundation on the
rate of U.S. entrepreneurship received widespread media coverage, including
stories that appeared in USA Today, the Wall Street Journal,
Chicago Tribune, Seattle Times, St. Louis Post-Dispatch,
Education Week, and Contra Costa Times. CNNMoney.com
also picked up the story. Fairlie's research on the digital divide was
covered by National Journal's "Technology Daily." . .
. American studies professor Tricia Rose appeared as a guest on
a special broadcast of National Public Radio's Talk of the Nation
program about race, poverty, and Hurricane Katrina. . . . Discovery
News ran a story about the latest analyses of the Dec. 26 Indian Ocean
tsunami, including a report by seismologist Thorne Lay. . .
. The New York Times quoted literature professor Richard
Terdiman in an article about a new partnership
between UC Libraries and technology companies to provide free public
access to digitized books. . . . Research on dark matter in elliptical
galaxies by physicist Joel Primack, visiting researcher
Avishai Dekel, and their collaborators was reported in
Science Now, Space Daily, ScienceDaily PhysOrg.com,
and Globes Online. . . . Film critic B. Ruby Rich of community
studies was quoted in Variety about Brokeback Mountain,
a new film about two gay cowboys that's due in theaters in December. Rich's
article about the film appeared in The Guardian and was reprinted
in the Sydney Morning Herald. She was also interviewed by National
Public Radio about Paradise Now, a film by Palestinian filmmaker
Hany Abu-Assad. Rich wrote a review of that film for the San Francisco
Bay Guardian. . . . The Olympian (Olympia, Washington) ran
a story about marine scientist Gregory Rau's research
on technology to control carbon dioxide emissions from power plants. .
. . The Toronto Star's coverage of a conference about neighborhood
revitalization featured comments by participant Manuel Pastor of
Latin American and Latino studies. . . . Literature professor Paul
Skenazy contributed five brief book reviews to the Washington Post.
. . . Sociologist Marcia Millman was interviewed by the
Chicago Sun-Times for an article about sisters, the topic of Millman's
most recent book. . . . An excerpt from physicist Bruce Schumm's
book Deep Down Things was published on the Physics Central web
site. . . . New Teacher Center director Ellen Moir's recent
national education award was covered by the Chronicle of Higher Education.
. . . A story in Science News about earthquake hazards in California
included a quote from geophysicist Steven Ward. . . . UCSC Farm
manager Jim Leap was contacted by Time magazine for a farm-to-cafeteria
story focused on campus farms that supply college cafeterias. . . . Agroecology
researcher Phil Howard was quoted in an Alternet.org story
about the growing U.S. reliance on imported food.
State and regional
Sociology instructor Mike Males was quoted widely regarding a
study about the frequency of fatal drug overdoses among the middle-aged.
The story, which first appeared in the Los Angeles Times,
was picked up as far away as Korea. . . . History professor Dana
Frank was quoted in the Ventura County Star on
the ways in which nationalist "Buy American" campaigns
can blame working people overseas rather than pinpoint the real
problem, corporate-driven free trade agreements. . . . Stephen
McCabe, coordinator of research and education at the UCSC
Arboretum, was interviewed on The Coastal Gardener television
program, broadcast locally on KGO TV. The Arboretum was also mentioned
in recent articles in the magazines American Gardener and
California Wild. . . . Economist Rob Fairlie's research
on the digital divide received broad play on KCBS Radio and was
featured in a page-one story in the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
. . . The San Jose Mercury News announced that professor
of linguistics Geoffrey Pullum was named one
of 51 Radcliffe Institute fellows for 2005-06. . . . Biologist
Jim Estes was quoted in a San Jose Mercury News
story about a recent federal decision changing the management
of the California sea otter population. . . . The Contra Costa
Times quoted literature professor Richard Terdiman
about an announcement that the University of California will provide
thousands of public-domain literary texts to a free online archive.
. . . Insidebayarea.com interviewed psychology professor
Craig Haney for a story about public opinion on the death
penalty.
Local
New Teacher Center director Ellen Moir's recent national
education award was covered by the Santa Cruz Sentinel. The Sentinel
also published an article about Faye Crosby, who
recently received a top award in social psychology. . . . Biologist Mark
Carr was quoted in a Monterey Herald story about the possibility
of developing an oil refinery on the site of the former Fort Ord. . .
. The Santa Cruz Sentinel noted the efforts of theater arts lecturer
Don Williams to include children in the Santa Cruz African
American community for a Kids on Broadway production of Ragtime.
. . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel and Aptos Times reported on
David Haussler, professor of biomolecular engineering,
receiving the Dickson Prize in Science. . . . In psychology, Bruce
Bridgeman appeared on KZSC Radio's The Sound of Young America,
discussing his research on the Mystery Spot. . . . Literature professor
and director of the UCSC Institute for Advanced Feminist Research Helene
Moglen was quoted in two Santa Cruz Sentinel articles about
the institute's conference on body modification. Art professor Joyce
Brodsky and Sesnon Gallery director Shelby Graham were also
quoted in the Sentinel. The Good Times and City on a
Hill Press also ran features on the conference. . . . The Santa
Cruz Sentinel noted that film and digital media professor Eli Hollander
and music professor Linda Burman-Hall were screening Kawitan,
their documentary film about natives of South Bali, at the Pacific Rim
Film Festival. . . . John Pearse, professor emeritus of ecology
