This summary highlights media placements members of the UCSC community have garnered during the month of September 2005.

National and international

In Hurricane Katrina news: The New York Times called on racism expert David Wellman of community studies to discuss the racial divide apparent even in relief concerts. The New York Times also contacted professor emeritus of psychology Elliot Aronson in the wake of the Katrina disaster for insight into the surge of lawlessness that broke out. . . . The new community studies internship to help hurricane-stricken areas coordinated by Mike Rotkin got broad play, including coverage by the Associated Press, KTVU TV, the San Jose Mercury News, Tuscaloosa (Alabama) News, Contra Costa Times, Modesto Bee, radio stations in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and Alabama, as well as the Santa Cruz Sentinel, the Monterey County Herald, and KSBW TV.

Research by psychology's Su-hua Wang was featured in a Newsweek magazine cover story about the intellectual and emotional life of infants. . . . Astronomer Sandra Faber was featured in the documentary "Origins," a four-part NOVA miniseries which aired on PBS stations. She was quoted in a review of the series on MSNBC.com, and the "Origins" web site features an interview with Faber. In addition, Faber was mentioned in the Santa Cruz Sentinel's "Name Dropping" column, and also in an article on Physorg.com about new observations of blue stars around a supermassive black hole in the Andromeda galaxy. . . . Sociologist Craig Reinarman's book about crack cocaine and the demonization of drugs was featured in an article in Slate about today's rising media hysteria about methamphetamines. . . . David Haussler, professor of biomolecular engineering, was quoted in a New York Times story about the evolutionary history of human chromosomes. Haussler was also quoted in a Science magazine story about research on the chimpanzee genome. . . . In a major story about today's teachers, U.S. News & World Report cited the model of intensive new-teacher support developed by the New Teacher Center as a model for the nation, noting the 88 percent retention rate of graduates of the program. The center was also featured in a (Durham, N.C.) Herald-Sun article about the challenges facing novice teachers. Another Herald-Sun article focused on the high rate of attrition among teachers in the Durham public schools and quoted NTC director Ellen Moir about the connection among mentoring, teacher retention, and student achievement. . . . Rolling Stone magazine quoted literature professor Marshall Leicester in a feature story about Jerry Garcia and the origins of the Grateful Dead. . . . Gary Glatzmaier, professor of Earth sciences, was quoted in a New York Times article about new findings on the rotation of Earth's core. . . . Thorne Lay, professor of Earth sciences, was featured in a cover story in Science News magazine about research on the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and resulting tsunami. . . . Geophysicist Steven Ward was quoted in a Discover magazine article about the West Coast's vulnerability to a tsunami. . . . The (Florida) Ledger published a story about high-tech ripoffs that target the elderly, quoting psychology professor Anthony Pratkanis. . . . Research on magnetism by physicist Sriram Shastry and graduate student Jan Haerter was covered by Space Daily and Press Trust of India. . . . Research by mathematician Richard Montgomery and physicist Michael Nauenberg was featured in a story about complex orbital motions in Science News Online. . . . Susanne Jonas of Latin American and Latino studies was a guest on WNYC Radio's Leonard Lopate Show about postwar Guatemala. . . . Research on protein fibrils implicated in neurodegenerative disorders by undergraduate Ghiam Yamin and others in the laboratory of Anthony Fink, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, was reported in Biotech Week, Life Science Weekly, Science Letter, and other related newsletters. . . . History professor Dana Frank was quoted in the Newport News Daily Press about the difficulty in buying American-made products due to trade agreements and the rising abundance of foreign-made goods. The Houston Chronicle and Vermont's Times Argus also picked up the story. . . . A story about the Cassini mission to Saturn in Astronomy Now magazine featured Erik Asphaug, associate professor of Earth sciences, and graduate student Lindsey Bruesch. . . . An item in the Guardian newspaper (U.K.) described research on undersea volcanoes by James Gill, professor of Earth sciences, and graduate student Darren Tollstrup. . . . The Washington Times cited the work of economist Lori Kletzer in a story about the hidden cost of free trade and the shortcomings of worker-retraining programs. . . . An article in Science News about the most distant gamma-ray burst ever discovered included a quote from astrophysicist Stan Woosley.

State and regional

In Hurricane Katrina news: David Wellman of community studies was quoted in a Los Angeles Times article about the debate over whether race played a role in response efforts. Wellman was also quoted in the Sacramento Bee, discussing how the natural disaster has shined a spotlight on the vulnerability of black Americans. His comments were picked up by the Monterey County Herald. . . . Politics professor Daniel Wirls helped the San Jose Mercury News sort out the political fallout for President Bush of his handling of the Katrina disaster.

Latin American and Latino studies professor Manuel Pastor coauthored an opinion piece for the Los Angeles Times that challenged the EPA's "colorblind" approach to environmental justice by presenting the results of years of research conducted by Pastor and others. . . . In a feature about the local food-and-farm scene, the San Francisco Chronicle dubbed the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems the "local granddaddy of slow food." The Center for Agroecology also received laurels in a WireTap piece that appeared on AlterNet about alternatives to the corporate-dominated food system. . . . The Contra Costa Times described a visit to UCSC's Shakespeare Santa Cruz in an article about northern California theater festivals. . . . Astronomer Greg Laughlin was quoted in the Hollister Free Lance in a story about meteor showers, Mars, and other astronomical spectacles. . . . UCSC's role in research on the chimpanzee genome was mentioned in stories in the San Jose Mercury News and Santa Cruz Sentinel, with a quote from postdoctoral researcher Katherine Pollard in the Sentinel story. . . . Geophysicist Steven Ward was featured in a Monterey Coast Weekly story about the threat of a tsunami on the California coast. . . . The San Gabriel Valley Tribune featured Farm apprenticeship graduate Mary Maverick in an article about EarthWorks Enterprises, an urban farm that works with troubled youngsters. . . . UCSC's leadership in French-intensive gardening was front and center in a recent Mother Earth News article, which highlighted Alan Chadwick's creation of what is now the Alan Chadwick Garden. . . . The Monterey County Herald's announcement of the new Ed.D. program prompted a flurry of calls from interested prospective students.

In Hurricane Katrina news: Tom Pettigrew, research professor of psychology and an expert on racism, was a guest on Community TV's Voices program, discussing "the storm after the storm." . . . Senior cook Bruce Holgers was featured in a Santa Cruz Sentinel story about volunteers pitching in to help hurricane victims. After a brief Red Cross training, Holgers was flown to Baton Rouge to help feed the hungry. . . . Theater arts lecturer Don Williams was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article about the role of race in the government response to Hurricane Katrina.

Astronomer David Koo was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel story about the astronomy conference held at UCSC this summer to honor astronomers Sandra Faber and George Blumenthal, and physicist Joel Primack. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about the engineering school's Summer Bridge Program for incoming students, with quotes from Peggy Church, a counselor and manager of undergraduate advising. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about Christina Ravelo, professor of Earth sciences, who was recently appointed to head the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics. . . . Campus veterinarian David Casper was featured in a Santa Cruz Sentinel story about the gray whale skeleton he is in the process of mounting outside the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. . . .
