This summary highlights media placements members of the UCSC community have garnered during the month of August 2005.

National and international

A crew from the British Broadcasting Corporation was on campus to interview psychology's Mara Mather for a documentary it's producing about aging. . . . James Zachos, professor of Earth sciences, was quoted in a story about climate change that ran in major Canadian newspapers, including the Edmonton Post, Montreal Gazette, Victoria Times Colonist, Leader-Post, and StarPhoenix. . . . The Washington Post quoted American studies professor Tricia Rose in an article about 26-year-old Los Angeles author and former video star Karrine Steffans, who has set the hip-hop world talking with a controversial new memoir. . . . Chip Lord, professor and chair of the Film and Digital Media Department, was quoted in Wired magazine online about the rapid growth of interest in studying film, noting that UCSC's department has ballooned from 100 students to 500 since its inception in 1997. Lord was also quoted in American Quarterly about the touring Ant Farm show. . . . Scams that target the elderly are on the rise, and psychology's Anthony Pratkanis has been in the news for his recent testimony about the problem before a U.S. Senate committee and because he has coauthored a book to help seniors protect themselves. Coverage has included a front-page story in the Seattle Times, a story in The Ledger of Florida, as well as items by Reuters, ABC World News Tonight, and online outlets MSN and Australian IT. . . . Raphael Kudela, associate professor of ocean sciences, was quoted in a story about harmful algal blooms in the Christian Science Monitor and USA Today. . . .An Associated Press story about university-level instruction in organic farming cited UCSC's Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture as among the handful of programs available in the country. . . . An article in Playboy magazine about natural disasters featured asteroid expert Erik Asphaug and tsunami expert Steven Ward. . . . Asphaug was also quoted in stories in New Scientist magazine, CNN.com, Space.com, and UPI wire service about a new study of the asteroid Eros. . . . The Pensacola News Journal referred to work by economist Lori Kletzer in an article about outsourcing north Florida's tech-related business activities. . . . An article in New Scientist magazine about the effects of commercial whaling on killer whales included quotes from biologist James Estes. . . . Theater arts assistant professor Alma Martinez was featured in AARP magazine where she was hailed as "a tireless advocate for Hispanics in the arts." . . . History of consciousness professor Angela Davis was quoted in The Age, Australia about her work as a civil rights activist and her appearance at a Melbourne conference. . . . Environment News ran a story about research by biologist Burney Le Boeuf on the effects of ocean temperatures on elephant seal pups. . . . An article in New Scientist magazine about problems in physics and cosmology related to "dark energy" included a quote from physicist Thomas Banks.

State and regional

The San Francisco Chronicle reviewed Shakespeare Santa Cruz’s performances of Twelfth Night and Engaged, noting that they showcased “the ongoing vigor of this annual festival” and “the canny leadership of Artistc Director Paul Whitworth.” The Chronicle also quoted Whitworth in a feature story in the Sunday "Datebook" section that included a full-page photo from Engaged. . . . A major grant from the Moore Foundation to establish a marine microbiology lab at UCSC was covered in the San Jose Mercury News, Santa Cruz Sentinel, Aptos Times, and Monterey County Herald, with quotes from Jonathan Zehr, professor of ocean sciences, and Gary Griggs, director of the Institute of Marine Sciences. . . . The San Diego Union-Tribune picked up on talk that economist Mike Dooley is on the short list of people being considered by President Bush to fill a vacancy on the Federal Reserve Board. . . . An article in the San Jose Mercury News about unusual conditions along the West Coast this year included a quote from marine biology graduate student Michael Weise. . . . An article in the San Jose Mercury News about minorities in the sciences featured Claudia Flores, a graduate student in Earth sciences, and Martha Zúñiga, professor of molecular, cell, and developmental biology.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel quoted Dana Frank of American studies in its coverage of the unions that broke away from the AFl-CIO. . . . The Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture was the subject of a lengthy feature in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, which picked up on the program's nickname, the "Harvard of Organic Agriculture." . . . Chemistry professor Jin Zhang's research on hydrogen fuel technology was featured in the Aptos Times. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel extensively quoted Shakespeare Santa Cruz director and theater arts professor Paul Whitworth in a feature about the summer season, and the Sentinel reviewed the opening night of Shakespeare Santa Cruz’s Twelfth Night, calling it a “splendid, hilarious production.”. . . In addition, Metro Santa Cruz ran a feature story offering a “behind-the-scenes” look at Shakespeare Santa Cruz. . . . The Good Times ran a story about the 25th anniversary of the UCSC Dickens Project, noting that it was cofounded by literature professor John Jordan and professor of English and comparative literature Murray Baumgarten. . . . Arts & Lectures director Michelle Witt was quoted in the Santa Cruz Sentinel about the new 2005-06 performing arts season.
