Media Highlights
July 2005
This summary highlights media placements members of the UCSC community
have garnered during the month of July 2005.
National and international
Thorne Lay, professor of Earth sciences, was featured on the Science
and Society program on WorldTalkRadio, discussing the great Sumatran
earthquake. Lay was also quoted in an Associated Press story about the
risk of another Indonesian tsunami that ran in dozens of newspapers throughout
the country, including the Los Angeles Times, San Jose Mercury News,
Sacramento Bee, Contra Costa Times, Monterey County Herald, New York Newsday,
Charlotte Observer, and others. . . . The Financial Times cited
work by economist Mike Dooley in recent coverage of the flow of
capital from poor countries to rich nations; the paper also reported that
Dooley is being considered as a Federal Reserve governor. . . . Research
on global warming and ocean temperatures by ocean scientists Christina
Ravelo, Margaret Delaney, and Michael Wara was reported in
the New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, Salt Lake Tribune, Daily
Mail (UK), Greenwire, Space Daily, PhysOrg.com, Innovations Report,
and WorldChanging.com. . . . Vice chancellor of student affairs
Francisco Hernandez was interviewed by Parade magazine about
online education as part of the fall back-to-school issue, and Education
Technology News quoted Hernandez in its coverage of the announcement
that UC College Prep Online will develop virtual schools in Imperial,
Butte, and Mendocino Counties. . . . Astronomers Greg Laughlin
and Douglas Lin were quoted in stories about new planet discoveries
in Science News and New Scientist magazines, the Guardian
(UK), and Space.com. . . . American studies professor Tricia
Rose was quoted in Black Issues in Higher Education about the
significant increase in the academic study of hip-hop and black popular
culture at colleges and universities across the country. . . . Undergraduate
Kara Deyhle was the focus of an Albuquerque Journal article
after she was named the 2005 Amy Biehl Youth Spirit Award winner. The
award recognizes young people for their service to others. It was inspired
by former Santa Fe resident and Fulbright Scholar Amy Biehl, who was killed
in a 1993 riot in South Africa. Deyhle was honored for her work with a
women's weaving cooperative in Chiapas, Mexico. . . . Nanotechnology
Now and the Santa Cruz Sentinel ran stories about research
by chemistry professor Jin Zhang on new hydrogen fuel technologies.
. . . Gary Bloom, associate director of the New Teacher Center,
penned a piece for Leadership about teacher-evaluation programs
that would enhance professional development and free up administrators
to focus on teachers who need more support. . . . Economist Joshua
Aizenman wrote about financial liberalization in developing countries
for the Federal Reserve Board San Francisco Economic Letter. .
. . UCSC Extension's Science Illustration Certificate Program was
praised in the June 23 edition of the journal Nature. The article
emphasized the importance of digital illustration and said UCSC's program
is one of the few globally to have a broader purview than medical
illustration." . . . Harvard University's Government Innovators
Network ran an article about a cutting-edge Internet dance/theater
collaboration between UCSC and New York University. The project was conceived
by assistant professor of theater arts Ted Warburton. . . . A team
of engineering students got some help on their senior project from SanDisk
engineers, who rescued data from saltwater-soaked memory cards, and their
story got widespread media coverage, including the Santa Cruz Sentinel
and online news sites of USA Today, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times,
Dallas Morning News, Baltimore Sun, Newsday, Forbes, Morningstar,
CNet News, and more. John Vesecky, professor of electrical
engineering, and student Roberto Menchaca were quoted in the stories.
. . . Economist Rob Fairlie's work on black self-employment was
featured in Black Enterprise, and Fairlie was also interviewed
by Inc. magazine about his research on access to technology and
entrepreneurship. The Long Island Business News also wrote about
that research. . . . Paul Ortiz's book tour for Emancipation
Betrayed, about black resistance to white supremacy in Florida, has
included interviews on Ohio NPR affiliate WOSU, KPFA Radio in Berkeley,
and KUSP Radio in Santa Cruz. . . . Fortune magazine cited work
by economist Lori Kletzer in an article about job retraining and
government programs.
State and regional
The San Jose Mercury News published an opinion piece coauthored
by Chancellor Denice D. Denton and Intel chairman Craig Barrett
about the new initiative to increase the number and quality of math and
science teachers in California. . . . Mark Carr, professor of ecology
and evolutionary biology, was quoted in a story in the Los Angeles
Daily News about effects of offshore oil rigs on fish populations.
. . . Biologist Patricia Morris was quoted in a Los Angeles
Times story about the elephant seal rookery near San Simeon. . . .
The San Francisco Chronicle did a feature story about the apprenticeship
in organic farming and gardening offered by the Center for Agroecology
& Sustainable Food Systems. . . . Professor Emeritus Ronald Grieson
coauthored an opinion piece about California's redistricting process that
appeared in the Riverside Press-Enterprise.
Local
Psychology professor Aida Hurtado spoke with Metro Santa
Cruz about identity politics and Mechicas, whose ancestors settled
North America before Europeans and don't want to be considered immigrants
to the United States. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported on
UCSC's new oversight of NASA's Airborne Sensor Facility, with quotes from
Eli Silver, professor of Earth sciences, Raphael Kudela,
associate professor of ocean sciences, and Donald Potts, professor
of ecology and evolutionary biology. . . . The Sentinel tracked
down economist John Isbister for comment on the costly West Coast
housing market and what could happen to local employment if the real estate
bubble bursts. . . . Politics professor Ronnie Lipschutz penned
an opinion piece for the Sentinel about the gap between the costs
of running the University of California and the resources that support
the system. . . . The Sentinel noted the publication of a new
oral history by the University Library's Regional History Project
about the impact of UCSC's Cowell Press. . . . The Sentinel
ran a big front-page story about the continued relevance of an environmental
report issued 35 years ago by UCSC students led by Gary Griggs,
now director of the Institute of Marine Sciences. In addition, Griggs
and Jonathan Zehr, professor of ocean sciences, were quoted in
a Sentinel story about a major grant from the Moore Foundation
for a marine microbiology lab. . . . Brent Haddad was interviewed
by KSCO Radio about the new statewide desalination study he's overseeing.
