This summary highlights media placements members of the UCSC
community have garnered during the month of March 2006. (See document

National and international
Astrophysicist Stan Woosley was quoted in stories in the
Washington Post and Philadelphia Inquirer about
a recently detected gamma-ray burst. . . . The Washington Post
reviewed a new book by history professor Bruce Levine,
Confederate Emancipation: Southern Plans to Free and Arm Slaves
During the Civil War, calling it brilliantly researched
and persuasively argued.. . . Film scholar B. Ruby Rich
of community studies was quoted in the Life magazine cover
story about actress Amy Adams. Rich was a juror at the annual
Sundance Film Festival. . . . Astrophysicist Stan Woosley
was quoted in stories in the Baltimore Sun, Monterey County
Herald, Biloxi Sun Herald, Bradenton Herald, and Albany
Times Union about a recently detected gamma-ray burst. . .
. Economist Lori Kletzer's work figured prominently in
a Washington Post editorial about U.S. jobs in the age
of globalization. The column cited Kletzer's study last year that
indicated it's the more highly skilled service-sector workers
who are likely to lose their jobs to overseas competition. . .
. Findings from biochemist Anthony Fink's lab on the formation
of protein fibrils associated with Parkinson's disease were reported
in Biotech Week, Life Science Weekly, Science Letter, Proteomics
Weekly, and other newsletters. . . . Donald Croll,
associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, was quoted
in an Associated Press story about a federal ban on krill harvesting
off the West Coast. . . . Sociology's Craig Reinarman,
author of two books about cocaine, was quoted about the drug in
a Time magazine article about drug use among baby boomers.
Reinarman was also quoted in stories about Ecstacy that appeared
in the SF Weekly and the East Bay Express. . . .
The Honolulu Advertiser quoted art lecturer Paul Rangell
in a story about the Honolulu Printmakers 78th Annual Exhibition
for which he served as juror and visiting artist. . . . Virginia's
Roanoke Times noted that history of consciousness professor
Angela Davis would be one of several major speakers to
appear at Virginia Tech this year in a lecture series that also
includes former presidential adviser and ABC News correspondent
George Stephanopoulos and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. And Indiana's
Palladium-Item noted that Davis was listed in neoconservative
author and commentator David Horowitz's new book The Professors:
The 101 Most Dangerous Academics in America. . . . College and
Research Libraries News announced that Virginia Steel
was appointed as the new University Librarian at UCSC.
State and regional
The San Jose Mercury News ran a front-page story about
a pair of peregrine falcons at the San Jose City Hall, with quotes
from Glenn Stewart of the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research
Group, which has installed a nest box on the building. . . . KSBW
TV (Salinas) interviewed Gabriel Elkaim, assistant professor
of computer engineering, and several of his students for a story
about his Mechatronics class's public demonstration of
the droids the students designed to maneuver on a table and shoot
Ping-Pong balls at a target. The Santa Cruz Sentinel also
ran a story about the demonstration. . . . The San Jose Mercury
News praised assistant theater arts professor Alma Martinez
in a review of the Bay Area premiere of Nilo Cruz's 2003 Pulitzer
Prize-winning play Anna in the Tropics. . . . The San
Francisco Chronicle quoted environmental studies professor
Steve Gliessman in an article about antiwar activism among
UCSC students. . . . The San Jose Mercury News announced
the summer lineup for Shakespeare Santa Cruz's 25th anniversary
summer season amid the redwood groves.
Local
The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a front-page story about research
on sea lions and other marine mammals led by Daniel Costa,
professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. . . . The Mid-County
Post ran a story about research on global warming by James
Zachos, professor of Earth sciences. . . . The Santa Cruz
Sentinel quoted Shakespeare Santa Cruz director and theater
arts professor Paul Whitworth in an article about the festival's
2006 summer lineup. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a
story about Mary Silver, professor of ocean sciences, and
her research on algal toxins in Monterey Bay. . . . An article
in the Mid-County Post on the long-range development plan
for Long Marine Lab included quotes from LML manager Steve
Davenport and Seymour Center director Julie Barrett Heffington.
. . . University Librarian Virginia Steel was quoted in
a Register-Pajaronian article about a $100,000 gift from
the Hugh Stuart Center Charitable Trust in San Jose to create
a new California History Room in McHenry Library's Special Collections.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel also announced the gift. . . .
Associate professor of history David Anthony was interviewed
on KUSP's Talk of the Bay program about his new book Max
Yergan: Race Man, Internationalist, Cold Warrior and the process
of researching it. Anthony was also featured in a Santa Cruz
Good Times article about the book. . . . Assistant professor
of art Dee Hibbert-Jones was quoted in a Santa Cruz
Sentinel article about a collaboration between UCSC students
and the city of Santa Cruz to create a public art installation
at the city landfill. . . . Theater arts professor and Shakespeare
Santa Cruz artistic director Paul Whitworth was quoted
in a Santa Cruz Good Times story about a special fundraising
performance of the play Dear Liar, a prelude to SSC's 25th
anniversary summer season. And Shakespeare Santa Cruz managing
director Marcus Cato was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel
article about local arts groups considering the proposed Tannery
Arts Center in downtown Santa Cruz as a place to expand their
programs. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran an article
about performances by New York's David Dorfman Dance company,
noting the collaboration between UCSC's Arts & Lectures
program and the Cultural Council of Santa CruzCounty to bring
arts education into the community.
