National and international

The Christian Science Monitor relied heavily on comments by economist Carl Walsh in its coverage of Alan Greenspan's retirement. . . .David Deamer, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, was featured in stories about research on the origins of life in the Economist magazine, London Times, Science Now, and the BBC News web site. . . . Craig Haney of psychology was quoted in a Philadelphia Inquirer article about the mental state of a man on death row, noting the mentally debilitating effects of isolation. . . . Research on climate change by James Zachos, professor of Earth sciences, was featured in stories about global warming in the Sunday Times (London), Daily Mail, the Independent, the Statesman, Irish News, BBC News, and the Columbus Dispatch. . . . Psychology's Anthony Pratkanis was quoted prominently in a Los Angeles Times story about Dick Cheney's recent hunting mishap and other blunders that become "defining moments" in the lives of high-profile politicians. The story was picked up by the Associated Press and appeared in numerous papers, including the Macon Telegraph and the Saint Paul Pioneer Press. . . . Britain's Guardian Weekly and The Observer quoted film and digital media professor Chip Lord for an article about the decline of U.S. automakers. (Lord was a founder of the architectural collective that created Cadillac Ranch.). . . Economist Rob Fairlie's study of employer-funded health care mandates, like the recently passed "Wal-Mart Bill" in Maryland, got widespread coverage in publications that included Managed Care Law, Law & Health Weekly, Obesity, Fitness & Wellness Week, Life Science Weekly, Science Letter, Health & Medicine Week, and Managed Care Weekly Digest. Fairlie found that bills that target large businesses fail to make a dent in the number of uninsured. . . . The Turkish publication HurriyetUSA and the Turkish Daily News ran stories on the music and career of music lecturer and guitarist Mesut Özgen. . . . Jonathan Fox of Latin American and Latino studies had a letter published in the Wall Street Journal that clarified the sweep of an 1882 law to filter the nation's borders. . . . David Williams, professor of physics, was quoted in a profile of his former graduate student, Miguel Morales, in the magazine Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. . . . The Christian Science Monitor quoted American studies professor emeritus John Dizikes in an article about the “rockification of sport”--the loud background soundtrack that weaves through today's sporting events. . . . Sociology's Mike Males appeared on the CBS News program Sunday Morning, during a segment about the aging of the baby boomers. . . . Literature professor John Jordan, codirector of UCSC's Dickens Project, was quoted on Minnesota Public Radio about the Christmas stories of Charles Dickens. . . . Michigan's Morning Sun ran a story about history of consciousness professor Angela Davis's appearance as the keynote speaker of Central Michigan University's Black History month celebrations, where she spoke about racism and sexism, invoked the legacies of Coretta Scott King and Rosa Parks, and called for the impeachment of President Bush. Davis was also featured in the Yes Weekly about a speech she delivered at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. . . . Journalism lecturer Conn Hallinan contributed an article to Foreign Policy in Focus about recent events in Iran. . . . Pamela Perry of community studies was quoted in a USA Today article about the role of race in young relationships, noting developmental differences among high school and college students. The article appeared in numerous other papers, including the Marshfield News-Herald (Wis.).

State and regional

An article in the San Jose Mercury News about the effects of global warming in California included quotes from Lisa Sloan, professor of Earth sciences, and postdoctoral researcher Lara Kueppers, as well as references to several studies conducted by other researchers in Sloan's lab. . . . Michael Hutchison, economics professor and interim dean of social sciences, was a guest on Forum, KQED Radio's public affairs program, discussing the Japanese economy and the recent stock market fiasco there. . . . Film scholar B. Ruby Rich attended the Sundance Film Festival, filing reports for Public Radio International's program The World and for the San Francisco Bay Guardian. . . . Gretchen Andreasen, director of the CalTeach Resource Center, was interviewed on radio stations KGO and KCBS about the launch of UCSC's California Teach program. . . . The new book by coastal geologist Gary Griggs, Living with the Changing California Coast, was the main source for an article about the sand supply on San Diego beaches in the online newspaper Voice of San Diego.

The Santa Cruz Metro ran a cover story on a UCSC conference titled "Reflections on Katrina," presented by the Humanities Division's Center for Cultural Studies, featuring the photographs of assistant art professor Lewis Watts and quoting history of consciousness professor James Clifford. . . . Shelby Graham, director of the Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery, was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article about an exhibit she curated of nontraditional photography featuring artists from the Bay Area and New York. . . . Professor of classics and comparative literature Mary-Kay Gamel was interviewed on KZSC Radio about the importance of academic humanities programs. . . . Economist Michael Hutchison took a call from the Santa Cruz Sentinel about the recent wave of layoffs sweeping through the U.S. automotive industry. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story recapping the 2005 local theater scene, praising shows by Shakespeare Santa Cruz and UCSC student productions. . . . Theater arts professor and Shakespeare Santa Cruz (SSC) artistic director Paul Whitworth was featured in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article about SSC's 25th anniversary season. . . . James Gill, professor of Earth sciences, was featured in a story in the Mid-County Post about his research on undersea volcanoes. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported that assistant professor of art Dee Hibbert-Jones, a member of the city's Public Art Committee, has initiated a public art project with UCSC students for the city landfill on Dimeo Lane overlooking Monterey Bay. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story on a new book by history professor Dana Frank, about a powerful women's labor movement she discovered in Latin America. . . . The Aptos Times ran a profile of Frank Drake, professor emeritus of astronomy and astrophysics. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel noted a three-day visit by Hollywood script supervisor Ana Maria Quintana to UCSC organized by assistant theater arts professor Alma Martinez. . . . Library development officer Margaret Gordon was quoted in the Santa Cruz Sentinel about the McHenry Library expansion and renovation project.
