This summary highlights prominent media placements UCSC faculty and staff
have garnered during the month of October 2004.
National and international
David Haussler, professor of biomolecular engineering, was quoted
in an article about genomic research in the Scientist magazine.
Fellow genome researcher James Kent was featured in an article
in the Deseret Morning News about a study in which Kent collaborated
with researchers at Utah's Huntsman Cancer Institute. . . . The Mexican
media, including La Jornada, El Universal, and Radio UNAM, covered
a talk by Susanne Jonas of Latin American and Latino studies about
the political rights of Latinos. . . . The Deseret Morning News
and the Associated Press covered the news that the Davis School District
in Utah is the latest to adopt a teacher mentoring program developed by
the UCSC New Teacher Center. . . . Susan Schwartz, professor
of Earth sciences and director of the Keck Seismology Lab, answered reporters'
questions about the magnitude 6 earthquake that struck near Parkfield
in September. Schwartz was interviewed by National Public Radio and local
television stations KION and KSBW. . . . The Statesman Journal
of Salem, Oregon, cited research on small-business ownership by economist
Rob Fairlie in a story about Latino business networks. . . . Astronomer
Sandra Faber is featured in "Origins," a four-part miniseries
for Nova on PBS. Faber was quoted in reviews of the series in the
Santa Cruz Sentinel and on MSNBC. . . . Theoretical physicist Thomas
Banks was quoted in Science News in a story about black
holes. . . . Stan Woosley, professor of astronomy and astrophysics,
was interviewed by BBC Radio's Leading Edge program for a story
about recent X-ray flashes from space that may signal supernova explosions.
Woolsey was also quoted in Science News in a story
about new images of a supernova remnant. . . . The Nation's Health
covered a recent trip by Nancy Stoller of community studies, who
toured prison facilities in the United Kingdom as part of her research
on inmate health. . . . Garth Illingworth, professor of astronomy
and astrophysics, was quoted in a story about the Hubble Ultra Deep Field
images of the early universe. The story ran in Knight Ridder newspapers

Anthropologist Alison Galloway's testimony in the trial of Scott
Peterson was covered in the San Jose Mercury News and the Contra
Costa Times, among other publications. . . . The Contra Costa Times,
Santa Cruz Sentinel, and KION TV ran stories about Claire Max,
professor of astronomy and astrophysics, who won the E. O. Lawrence Award
in Physics. . . . Women's studies professor Bettina Aptheker was
quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle, Alameda Times-Star, Berkeley
Daily Planet, Oakland Tribune, San Mateo County Times, Argus, Tri-Valley

about research indicating that woolly mammoths and other large mammals
were wiped out in North America by a combination of human hunting and
climate change included quotes from Paul Koch, professor of Earth
sciences and a collaborator on the study. . . . Julie Guthman of
community studies was interviewed by KPFA Radio and a Marin County radio

expert Craig Reinarman of sociology was quoted in a Contra
