June 2005
This summary highlights media placements members of the UCSC community
have garnered during the month of June 2005.
National and international
With the return of two Britons who'd been held in solitary confinement
at Guantanamo Bay for up to 18 months, BBC News relied on psychology's
Craig Haney for an extensive report on the effects of such deprivation.
He was also quoted prominently in a USA Today article about the
devastating long-term effects of solitary confinement. . . . The Denver
Post ran an article about research by Lisa Sloan, professor
of Earth sciences, and Ph.D. recipient Jacob Sewall on the effects
of climate change on the Rocky Mountain snowpack. . . . Paul Frymer
of politics was a guest on the radio show Marketplace talking about
the AFL-CIO. . . . Biologists Terrie Williams and Jim Estes
were featured in a story on NPR's All Things Considered about their
research on the effects of killer whale predation on sea otter populations
in Alaska. . . . The Associated Press picked up the story out of Anchorage
about Alaska's mentor-teacher program, which was modeled after the work
of the New Teacher Center. . . . Assistant professor of film and
digital media L. S. Kim was quoted in ABC News online about
stereotypes of Asian actors in Hollywood. . . . An article on Space.com
about a new theory of the formation of the solar system included a quote
from Douglas Lin, professor of astronomy and astrophysics. . .
. David Haussler, professor of biomolecular engineering, was quoted
in a story in Newsday about research on DNA extracted from the
bones of extinct cave bears. . . . Seismologist Thorne Lay was
quoted in an article in New Scientist magazine about the great
Sumatra-Andaman earthquake. . . . Newsweek magazine noted the upcoming
Shakespeare Santa Cruz production of Twelfth Night in an
article about promising 2005 summer seasons by respected theater companies.
. . . Literature professor Paul Skenazy contributed four book reviews
to the Washington Post. . . . A BBC News story about
bottlenose dolphins using sponges as tools to help find food included
a quote from Grant Pogson, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary
biology. . . . Organic Inc. tapped Farm manager Jim Leap
for comment on the organic food industry and the growing role major corporations
are playing in the booming sector of food production. . . . Astronomer
Jason Prochaska was quoted in stories about his research on gamma-ray
bursts on PhysOrg.com and Space Daily.com. . . . Screenindia.com
quoted associate professor of history Dilip Basu in an article
about the screening of Satyajit Ray's film Pather Panchali on its
50th birthday at the Cannes Film Festival. . . . Astronomy graduate student
Genevieve Graves was quoted in stories about her supernova research
on MSNBC.com, Space.com, and RedNovaNews.com. . . . Optoelectronics
Report ran a story about research on optical sensor technology by
Holger Schmidt, assistant professor of electrical engineering.
. . . An article in Earth Island Journal about the impacts of wind
turbines on bird populations described research by Grainger Hunt,
a biologist with the Predatory Bird Research Group. . . . Astronomers
Steven Vogt, Greg Laughlin, and Douglas Lin were quoted
in news stories about the discovery of a rocky planet, including stories
in the Los Angeles Times, San Jose Mercury News, Minneapolis Star Tribune,
UPI and AP news wires, BBC News, CNN.com, MSNBC.com, Discovery News,
and Sci-Tech Today. . . . James Zachos, professor of Earth
sciences, was quoted in New Scientist magazine and online news
sites RedNova.com, Space Daily, and others, which ran stories about
his research on ocean chemistry during a period of extreme global warming
in the past. . . . Psychology's Anthony Pratkanis was quoted in
an ABCNews.com story about Howard Dean and the media's coverage
of Dean's leadership of the Democratic National Committee. The story was
picked up by The Frontrunner. . . . The Engineering 2 Building
was featured in an article in Architecture magazine. . . . Acoustic
Guitar magazine reviewed Music Department lecturer Mesut Özgen's
latest CD of folk-inspired classical music, Troubadour, describing
his playing as "stunningly versatile and expressive throughout."
. . . An article in Science News about declining fisheries included
quotes from marine scientist Steven Berkeley.
State and regional
In a personal perspective piece on the San Francisco Chronicle's
opinion page, editorial writer Louis Freedberg hailed the work of UCSC's
New Teacher Center, saying it is "regarded as the best of
its kind in the nation." The piece quoted director Ellen Moir's
admonition that "One of the best things we can do is invest in the
early years of a teacher's career." . . . Biologist Giacomo Bernardi
was quoted in a Los Angeles Times article about grunion, the only
fish that leave the water to spawn on beaches. . . . Associate history
professor Pedro Castillo was quoted in southern California's Press-Enterprise
about a decision by Univision Network, the most popular Spanish-language
broadcast television network in the United States, to add local coverage
due to the significant Latino population in the area. . . . Geophysicist
Steven Ward was quoted in a San Francisco Chronicle story
about the risk of a tsunami on the West Coast, and he was also interviewed
about tsunamis on KSBW TV. . . . The San Francisco Chronicle picked
up on a recent report by the Public Policy Institute of California about
the future of the Golden State, which includes a chapter authored by Manuel
Pastor of Latin American and Latino studies. . . . Anthropologist
Triloki Pandey was quoted in a San Jose Mercury News story
about the local Indo-American community. . . . The Los Angeles Times
and the Torrance Daily Breeze ran a feature about alumnus Kent
Nagano and his work on the symphonic work, Manzanar: An American
Story, describing a preview of its world premiere that recently took
place at UCSC's Pacific Rim Festival. . . . Jason Mark,
a member of the Center for Agroecology's apprenticeship program, penned
an op-ed about organic food for the San Francisco Chronicle. Mark,
who is working on a book about food, detailed the role of major corporations
in the growth of the organic food industry. . . . The San Jose Mercury
News wrote up the opening of the Farm & Garden's market
cart, which sells fresh organic produce and flowers at the base of campus
every Tuesday and Friday through the growing season.
Local
Literature professor Nathaniel Mackey was quoted in a Santa
Cruz Sentinel story about being selected to present UCSC's annual
faculty research lecture next year. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel
lauded the Theater Arts Department's "spectacularly bright and cheerful
production" of Sondheim's musical, Merrily We Roll Along,
noting director (and department chair) Danny Scheie's "mischievous
eye for irony" and "brilliant eye for flamboyant drama."
The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about Robert Kraft,
professor emeritus of astronomy and astrophysics and former director of
UCO/Lick Observatory, who has been honored by the Astronomical Society
of the Pacific. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran an article about
an upcoming seminar for high school teachers and the annual weeklong Dickens
Universe, to be held this summer as part of the 25th anniversary of UCSC's
Dickens Project. . . . Sesnon Gallery director Shelby Graham
was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel story about local art galleries.
. . . Dan Wirls of politics penned an op-ed that appeared in the
Santa Cruz Sentinel about the Senate's consideration of a "nuclear
option" filibuster. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a feature
story on 34-year-old history major Martin Smith, one of the oldest
UCSC students to graduate this year and winner of several awards for his
research on troop resistance to the Vietnam war. . . . The Santa Cruz
Sentinel ran a story about engineering dean Steve Kang, who
received a major award for his engineering research and leadership in
education. . . . Deborah Abbott, director of the Lionel Cantú
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex Resource Center, was quoted
in a San Jose Mercury News article about the gender-neutral bathrooms
at the Saturn Cafe. . . . The Salinas Californian reported that
Angelica Jimenez has earned a $20,000 Pister Leadership Opportunity
Award to attend UCSC.
