Seismologist Thorne Lay was featured in widespread media coverage of the scientific analysis of the great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of December 26, 2004. Lay was interviewed by CNN TV and radio stations KCBS and KSCO. He was quoted in stories in the New York Times, San Jose Mercury News, San Francisco Chronicle, Contra Costa Times, Arizona Republic, Houston Chronicle, and other national and international newspapers, and on Discovery Channel News, Sci-Tech News, and other web sites. An Associated Press story with quotes from Lay ran in newspapers throughout the world and on numerous web sites. . . . Political scientist Eva Bertram was quoted in a Business Week cover story about why President Bush's Social Security proposals aren't taking off. . . . Anthropologist Susan Harding was featured in a USA Today article about the exceptional success of Billy Graham. . . . American studies professor Tricia Rose was quoted in the Chicago Sun-Times about her participation in a three-day conference on feminism and hip-hop in Chicago aimed at battling hip-hop stereotypes. . . . Mathematical models of fish populations developed by Marc Mangel, professor of applied math and statistics, were the focus of an article in SIAM News, published by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. . . . Bombay's Indian Express, India-West, and Britain's A2media.com quoted associate history professor Dilip Basu in stories about the screening of a restored print of Indian director Satyajit Ray's film Pather Panchali to celebrate its 50th anniversary at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. India's online Screen Weekly also covered the story. . . . Geophysicist Steven Ward was quoted in a story about tsunami warning systems in American Scientist magazine. . . . Research on climate change by Lisa Sloan, professor of Earth sciences, was mentioned in a long article on the environment in Congressional Quarterly Weekly. . . . A study on the effects of ocean warming on elephant seals by Burney Le Boeuf, professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology, was covered on various web sites, including LiveScience, Innovations Report, ScienceBlog, SciScoop, and WildlifeNews. . . . Adjunct professor of economics Richard Musgrave was mentioned in a (Worcester, Mass.) Sunday Telegram article about economist Attiat Ott of Clark University, who described Musgrave as her true mentor. . . . The Atlantic Monthly published a letter to the editor by emeriti professors Bill Friedland of community studies and Ronnie Gruhn of politics, who pointed out differences between President Bush and President Woodrow Wilson. Unlike Bush, they wrote, Wilson "sought global organization through other than military means." . . . Douglas Lin, professor of astronomy and astrophysics, was quoted in a Space.com story about extrasolar planets. . . . Physicist David Smith's research on gamma ray emissions associated with thunderstorms was featured in a story on PhysOrg.com. . . . The News & Observer and the Herald-Sun in Durham, North Carolina, wrote about the new mentoring program for beginning teachers that will be administered in partnership with the New Teacher Center. And the Anchorage Daily News gave a nice nod to the center in a story about the teacher-mentoring program the Anchorage schools modeled after NTC's work. . . . Men's Health magazine ran a blurb about research by psychology's Eileen Zurbriggen. . . . The Minnesota Daily covered a guest lecture by social psychologist Tom Pettigrew, who discussed race in the U.S. educational system 50 years after the historic U.S. Supreme Court decision in the case of Brown v. the Board of Education. . . . The Capital Times in Madison, Wis., suggested that Marquette University should consider renaming themselves the Banana Slugs since the nickname they've chosen is proving unpopular. . . . In a story about the Farm School in Athol, Massachusetts, the Associated Press noted the hands-on apprenticeship in organic farming and gardening offered by the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems. CNN and Forbes picked up the AP story. . . . Orin Martin, manager of the Alan Chadwick Garden, was featured in a Boulder (Colorado) Weekly article about changing weather patterns. Martin was one of several farmers whose observations set up an in-depth discussion about agriculture and global climate change. . . . Washington's Ellensburg Daily Record ran a story about a keynote address given by history of consciousness professor Angela Davis for Central Washington University's annual social forum. . . . Postdoctoral researcher Phil Howard's work on what consumers want to know about the food they buy was picked up by Natural Life.

State and regional

Julie Guthman of environmental studies was featured in a Los Angeles Times trend story about the meaning of the term "organic" and changing farming standards. . . . Chancellor Denice Denton was featured in a San Francisco Chronicle story about a science seminar for Bay Area high school girls at which Denton spoke. . . . The San Jose Mercury News, Santa Cruz Sentinel, Watsonville Register-Pajaronian, and Good Times all ran feature stories on UCSC's 2005 Pacific Rim Music Festival, quoting artistic director and associate music professor Hi Kyung Kim and music professor Nicole Paiement. Metro Santa Cruz also ran a story on the festival quoting music lecturer John Sackett. . . . The Los Angeles Times quoted associate history professor Pedro Castillo in an article about how Santa Ana businesses incorporate the names of Mexican towns to attract customers and reach out to former neighbors. . . . The media were on hand when research associates Glenn Stewart and Brian Latta banded four peregrine falcon chicks in a nest on the PG&E building in San Francisco. Coverage included the San Francisco Chronicle, Contra Costa Times, Santa Cruz Sentinel, Associated Press, and KPIX TV. . . . The San Jose Mercury News covered the election of professor emeritus of environmental studies Michael Soulé and UC Provost M.R.C. Greenwood to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. . . . Economist Rob Fairlie spoke with the Los Angeles Times about trends in teenage unemployment. . . . Literature professor Nathaniel Mackey was quoted in a San Francisco Chronicle article about jazz musician Cecil Taylor and the opening of a new documentary film titled Cecil Taylor: All the Notes. . . . The Los Angeles Times reviewed a concert of the UCSC Pacific Rim Music Festival that celebrated the 70th birthday of composer Terry Riley and featured a major new work by the Kronos Quartet, noting the “sheer level of bliss” produced by the three-and-a-half-hour performance. . . . Assistant professor of film and digital media Gustavo Vazquez was quoted in the Associated Press about the battle to preserve trees in the main square of historic Oaxaca, Mexico. . . . The San Francisco Chronicle ran a feature on Eisa Davis, the playwright niece of history of consciousness professor Angela Davis, noting that Eisa's play Angela's Mixtape is a sketch of a life in the shadow of her aunt, “a woman many consider one of the 20th century's most notable American figures.”. . . Medical anthropologist Nancy Chen discussed the fine points of "desktop dining" with a reporter at the San Jose Mercury News, who explored the social and psychological consequences of eating lunch at your desk. . . . Sociologist Mike Males was quoted in a Los Angeles Times article about the impact the prevalence of pornography in popular culture is having on teens. The article noted that teens today have the lowest rates of pregnancy, birth, and abortion in decades, and Males cautioned that adults always think "kids today are worse."

Biology graduate student Robin Dunkin was quoted in a story in the Watsonville Register-Pajaronian about recent killer whale attacks on migrating gray whales in Monterey Bay. . . . The Aptos Times ran a story about research on wireless communication networks by J. J. García-Luna-Aceves, professor of computer engineering. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a review of Music Department lecturer Mesut Özgen's concert for the Cabrillo College Distinguished Artists Series, calling it a display of “spectacular classical guitar." . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about whether Santa Cruz County beaches are shrinking, with quotes from geologists Gerald Weber and Gary Griggs. . . . Brent Haddad of environmental studies coauthored an opinion piece for the Monterey County Herald, calling on officials to develop a plan to control polluted urban runoff that flows into the bay. . . .
