April 2005
This summary highlights media placements UCSC faculty and staff have
garnered during the month of April 2005.
National and international
Economist Mike Dooley continues to garner media attention for
his views regarding foreign investment in the U.S. economy, most recently
in a Newsweek cover story about the falling dollar. . . . Research
by biologist Donald Croll and his collaborators on the effects
of introduced foxes on birds and vegetation in the Aleutian Islands was
the subject of stories in the New York Times, Washington Post, Newsday,
Christian Science Monitor, Miami Herald, Ventura County Star,
Lincoln Journal Star, and Duluth News Tribune, and
online news sites Live Science and Science Daily. . . .
A story in Science News magazine focused on the planet formation
theories of Douglas Lin, professor of astronomy and astrophysics.
Another story in Science News about new observations of extrasolar
planets included quotes from astronomer Greg Laughlin. . . . Economist
Rob Fairlie's research on Asian entrepreneurs was covered by Business
Week and KQED Radio. Fairlie also fielded a call from Money
magazine for an article on earnings growth among entrepreneurs. And Black
Enterprise reported the results of Fairlie's research for the
Small Business Administration on black self-employment rates. .
. . Sociologist Mike Males was extensively quoted in a Family
Practice News story about claims that a reported drop in drug use
among teens is linked to a public-service ad campaign. . . . A story in
the Ann Arbor News about a public lecture by Paul Koch,
professor of Earth sciences, discussed Koch's ideas about the extinction
of mastodons and other large animals in North America during the late
Pleistocene. . . . Women's studies professor Bettina Aptheker was
quoted in a St. Petersburg Times article about the decline of female
action heroines in Hollywood. . . . An article in the Columbus Dispatch
described research by Earth sciences graduate student Brooke Crowley
to determine the age of the Sierra Nevada range from isotope analysis
of fossil horse teeth. . . .Michael Riordan, adjunct professor
of physics, was quoted in a New York Times story about Moore's
Law. . . . The Chronicle of Higher Education ran a story about
the new Engineering 2 Building in its campus architecture supplement,
with a quote from Peyman Milanfar, associate professor of electrical
engineering. . . . Laser Focus World ran a story about Roberto
Manduchi, assistant professor of computer engineering, and his work
on a laser-based assistive device for the blind. . . . A story in New
Scientist magazine on the use of femtosecond lasers by cell biologists
includes the work of a team led by Yishi Jin, professor of molecular,
cell, and developmental biology. . . . Geophysicist Steven Ward
was quoted in another article about tsunamis, this time in Science
World magazine. . . .Research by environmental toxicologist Roberto
Gwiazda on the impact of household lead hazard control measures on
blood lead levels in children was reported in Health & Medicine
Week, Hematology Week, Life Science Weekly, Science Letter, Lab &
Health Weekly, Lab Law Weekly, and other newsletters. . . . Berkshires.com
announced that American studies professor George Lipsitz would
be the keynote speaker at a conference to examine the future of ethnic
studies at Williams College. . . . The Herald-Sun in Durham, North
Carolina, wrote about the school district's partnership with the New
Teacher Center to provide mentors for novice teachers. . . . GEO
World wrote up the UC Atlas of Global Inequality. The atlas is a project
of the Center for Global, International and Regional Studies. .
. . The Asbury Park Press (New Jersey) ran a feature on history
of consciousness professor Angela Davis prior to her appearance
at Rutgers University to speak on the role of American women in transforming
culture, history, and politics. Her talk was also covered by the Star-Ledger
and Rutgers Daily Targum.
State and regional
Michael Loik of environmental studies was featured prominently
in a Los Angeles Times article about the ripple effects of this
winter's heavy rains. . . . Sociologist Hiroshi Fukurai was quoted
in a San Francisco Daily Journal article about charges that anti-Semitism
influenced the makeup of jury panels in capital cases in Alameda County
from the mid-1980s to mid-1990s. The New York Times picked up the
story, bringing national attention to claims of bias in the juror selection
process, which is Fukurai's specialty. . . . InsideBayArea.com
ran a story about an exhibition of paintings by art professor emerita
Kathryn Metz at the Wiegand Gallery in Belmont. . . . Renee
Tajima-Peña of community studies was quoted in a San Francisco
Bay Guardian write-up of the film a.k.a. Don Bonus.
. . . Geophysicist Steven Ward was interviewed on KPIX TV News
about the magnitude 8.7 earthquake off the coast of Sumatra on March 28,
three months after a devastating earthquake and tsunami in the same region.
. . . The San Jose Mercury News reported that American studies
professor Tricia Rose boldly confronted some of the people
responsible for disseminating misogynistic lyrics at a landmark
conference on feminism and hip-hop held at the University of Chicago.
. . . The Los Angeles Times quoted psychology professor Catherine
Cooper in a feature story about home and how the word
means different things after we move out of our childhood home. . . .
William Berry, managing director of the University Affiliated Research
Center at NASA Ames, was quoted in a story about the future of NASA Ames
in the San Jose Business Journal. . . . Physicist Hartmut Sadrozinski
was quoted in a story in the San Luis Obispo Tribune about a weather
balloon project for high school students organized by the Santa Cruz Institute
for Particle Physics.
Local
The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about Cormac Flanagan,
assistant professor of computer science, who won a prestigious Sloan Research
Fellowship. . . . Art professor Dee Hibbert-Jones was quoted in
the Santa Cruz Sentinel about a public art project in collaboration
with Santa Cruz County elementary schools. . . . Ira Pohl, professor
and chair of computer science, was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel
story about a new track in computer game design for computer science majors.
. . . The Good Times ran a feature on Barnstorm, a new student-run
production company established by the Theater Arts Department to
help ease the transition for undergraduates from academia to the professional
theater world. . . .The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about biologist
Melissa Jurica, who won a prestigious Searle Scholarship. . . .
The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran an item about a UCSC course taught
by television consultant, alumnus, and UC Santa Cruz Foundation trustee
Loren Steck, titled Working in TV and Film, noting that
theater arts professor Kathy Foley helped come up with the idea
for the class. . . . Music Department lecturer Ray Brown was quoted
in the Santa Cruz Sentinel about the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival.
. . . Metro Santa Cruz ran a feature story about a new book, titled
In Memoriam: Norman O. Brown, about the late UCSC professor emeritus
of humanities. . . . Stephen McCabe, coordinator of research and
education at the UCSC Arboretum, was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel
story about the exceptional amount of rain this year and its effects on
plant life. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about the
peregrine falcons released at Long Marine Lab, with quotes from Glenn
Stewart of the Predatory Bird Research Group. . . . Metro Santa
Cruz published a story about music lecturer Mesut Özgen's
use of classical Turkish melodies in his original compositions for classical
guitar. . . . Metro Santa Cruz ran a story about jazz singer Billie
Holiday, quoting from a book by history of consciousness professor Angela
