Media Highlights
March 2005
This summary highlights media placements UCSC faculty and staff have
garnered during the month of March 2005.
National and international
Astronomer Stan Woosley was featured in widespread media coverage
of a study by other researchers on supermassive stars, including stories
in the New York Times, Baltimore Sun, Houston Chronicle, Contra Costa
Times, and Astronomy magazine. Woosley was also interviewed
on National Public Radio's Morning Edition. . . . The Christian
Science Monitor quoted international economist Joshua Aizenman
in a trend story about the growing number of professional and educational
opportunities in India. With more Indians choosing to stay home to work
and study, India is rapidly pursuing its goal of becoming a knowledge
economy, the paper reported. . . . Science News magazine
ran a story about research by physicist David Smith on terrestrial
gamma-ray flashes, and Smith was quoted in stories about this research
in New Scientist magazine, the Washington Times, and online
news sites Discovery News, MSNBC, Science Daily, SpaceRef, and
Space Daily. . . . American studies professor Tricia Rose
was quoted in the Orlando Sentinel and Raleigh News & Observer
about the pervasiveness of pop culture's highly sexual and demeaning images
of African American women. Rose also contributed a book review of Keith
Boykin's Beyond The Down Low: Sex, Lies, and Denial in Black America
to the Washington Post. . . . Economist Nirvikar Singh penned
a column about the budget process in India for the Delhi-based Financial
Express, one of the top business dailies in India. . . . Astronomer
Greg Laughlin was quoted in a National Geographic article
about the search for other planets like our own. . . . Economist Rob
Fairlie was quoted in an Asbury Park Press (New Jersey) story
about the obstacles faced by black entrepreneurs, including lack of access
to capital and experience. . . . Douglas N. C. Lin, professor of
astronomy and astrophysics, was featured in a story on Space.com
about "orphan planets" wandering through space after being ejected
from their solar systems. . . . Sociology doctoral recipient John Ackerman
coauthored an op-ed piece about Mexico for the New York Times. . .
. Associate professor of literature Karen Yamashita was featured
in a Minneapolis Star Tribune article about her four works of fiction
prior to an appearance at Macalester College in St. Paul. . . . The German
magazine Gesundheit reproduced data generated by the UC Atlas of
Global Inequality for a piece about life expectancy. The atlas is a project
of the Center for Global, International, and Regional Studies.
. . . In Family Practice News, sociology's Mike Males discussed
a recent study that reported a drop in teen drug use. . . . The Hindustan
Times noted that women's studies assistant professor Anjali Arondekar
was one of 40 Indian academicians teaching in American universities who
have written to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urging her to revoke
the U.S. visa of Narendra Modi, chief minister of Gujarat, for violation
of the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998. . . . The campus newspapers
of Princeton and Vanderbilt Universities ran stories on history of consciousness
professor Angela Davis when she spoke at those campuses during
Black History Month. Davis was also quoted in Kentucky's Courier-Journal
about her role in the development of a new endowed chair in race, class,
gender, and sexuality at the University of Louisville.
State and regional
Mary Silver, professor of ocean sciences, was quoted in stories
about harmful algal blooms in Monterey Bay that ran in the San Jose
Mercury News, Santa Cruz Sentinel, Monterey County Herald, Watsonville
Register-Pajaronian, and Silicon Valley Business Journal. .
. . Associate history professor Pedro Castillo was quoted in a
Fresno Bee article about a bill passed in Mexico's lower house
allowing Mexicans abroad to vote from within the United States in presidential
elections. . . . Susanne Jonas of Latin American and Latino studies
was interviewed by Telemundo, Channel 48, about U.S. immigration policy
toward Latin America. . . . The San Jose Mercury News noted assistant
professor of theater arts David Cuthbert's role as the lighting
designer for actor/comedian Billy Crystal's hit Broadway show, 700
Sundays. . . . The San Francisco Chronicle cited a book cowritten
by American studies professor emerita Judy Yung, Poetry and
History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island 1910-1940, in an article
about Asian American history. . . . The San Jose Mercury News quoted
Manuel Pastor of Latin American and Latino studies in a story about
the $6 million Mayfair Improvement Initiative that helped revitalize the
San Jose neighborhood. . . . Biologist Glenn Stewart from the Predatory
Bird Research Group was featured in coverage of peregrine falcons nesting
on the PG&E building in San Francisco in the San Francisco Chronicle,
KGO and KTVU television news, and KGO Radio. . . . The San Francisco
Chronicle described a courtroom portrait of history of consciousness
professor Angela Davis that was featured in a rare exhibit at UC
Berkeley's main library of sketches from famous trials. . . . Writing
lecturer Conn Hallinan was quoted in the Fresno Bee about
the shortfalls of a media industry dominated by corporate conglomerates,
and he contributed an editorial piece about foreign policy and
China to CounterPunch.com. . . . American studies professor George
Lipsitz was quoted in a Los Angeles Times article about Mexican
pop music superstar Gloria Trevi.
Local
Stephen Thorsett, professor and chair of astronomy and astrophysics,
was featured in an article in the Mid-County Post about UCSC's
involvement in plans for a new space-based telescope. . . . The Santa
Cruz Sentinel ran a story about women's studies professor Bettina
Aptheker, covering her address to the 10th annual Monterey County
Women's Multicultural Conference where she noted that reproductive choice
is a human right. The Monterey County Herald also covered
her talk. . . . Economist David Kaun's letters to the editor of
the Santa Cruz Sentinel about the Bush administration's plans to
overhaul Social Security prompted KSCO Radio to invite him to discuss
the topic during a recent two-hour show. . . . History Department professor
emeritus David Sweet was quoted in a Watsonville Register-Pajaronian
article about an American Civil Liberties national drug law reform project
that has recently come to Santa Cruz. . . . The Good Times featured
Roberto Manduchi, assistant professor of computer engineering,
and graduate student Dan Yuan in a story about their efforts to
develop assistive technology for the blind. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel
ran an article about UCSC's New Teacher Center being awarded a
$1.5 million contract to evaluate school districts' programs for teachers.
. . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel noted that literature professor Susan
Gillman received an honorable mention from the Modern Language Association
of America (MLA) for her book Blood Talk: American Race Melodrama and
the Culture of the Occult. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel and
Good Times ran feature stories on theater arts lecturer Don
Williams, who was honored at this year's Calabash Awards for his contributions
to ethnic arts in Santa Cruz County. The Metro Santa Cruz
and Watsonville Register-Pajaronian also announced his award.
