December 2003
This summary highlights prominent media placements UCSC faculty and staff
have garnered during the month of December 2003.
International
Economist Ken Kletzer fielded a call from Latin Finance Magazine
about collective action clauses. . . . Politics professor Michael Urban
was interviewed by BBC Radio about the Chechen War and by Radio 101, based
in Zagreb, Croatia, about the Putin presidency. . . . Economist Michael
Dooleys analysis of the $500 billion U.S. deficit was covered
by The Economist magazine and discussed on the EIU RiskWire.
. . . History of consciousness professor Angela Davis was quoted
in Australias Green Left Weekly in an article about her public
lecture at the University of Queensland, where she was attending an international
conference on women in prison.
National
The New York Times tapped Susanne Jonas of Latin American
and Latino studies for a story about the long-term costs of U.S.-led coups
in Guatemala and Iran in the early 1950s, and the story ran in Salt Lake
Citys Deseret News. Jonas, who delivered a keynote speech
during a November conference on "Thwarting Democracy in Iran and
Guatemala: What Have We Learned Fifty Years After the U.S.-Sponsored Coups,"
was also interviewed about Guatemalan politics by Chicago Public Radio.
. . . Stories continue to appear about a new study coauthored by Jim
Estes, adjunct professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, suggesting
that the whaling industry has had dramatic long-term effects on ocean
ecosystems. Estes was most recently quoted in an Associated Press story
that appeared in the Washington Post and Newsday. . . .
Jim Kent, a research scientist at the Center for Biomolecular Science
and Engineering (CBSE), was quoted in a story about human genome data
in Wired Online. Kent and CBSE director David Haussler were
also featured in a story in the Fort Collins Coloradan about a
pair of lectures Haussler gave recently at Colorado State University.
. . . Don Brenneis discussed the field of anthropology with the
Chicago Tribune during the American Anthropological Associations
annual meeting recently. . . . Literature professor Paul Skenazy
contributed several book reviews to the Washington Post. . . .
The Kansas City Star cited history of consciousness professor Angela
Davis in an article about prison industries. . . . UCSC and Long Marine
Lab figure prominently in an article in the December issue of Discover
magazine about alumnus Ted Cranford. Cranford earned his undergraduate
and graduate degrees here studying marine mammals with the late Kenneth
Norris, who is also featured in the story. The article--by another
UCSC alum, science writer Shannon Brownlee--details Cranford's
investigations of the anatomy and astonishing noise-making capacity of
sperm whales. Cranford is now an adjunct professor at San Diego State
University. . . . Hispanic Outlook magazine quoted Francisco
Hernandez, executive director of the UC
College Prep Initiative, in an article about online education. . .
. An in-depth interview with sociologist Mike Males, who specializes
in issues of youth, was featured on DRCNet, the online home of
the Drug Reform Coordination
Network. . . . Maggie Fusari, director of the UCSC Natural
Reserves, was quoted in a story in the Christian Science Monitor
about squatters who live on public lands. . . . Forensic anthropologist
Alison Galloway was quoted in Newsday about the research value
of the University of Tennessees extensive collection of human skeletons.
. . . History professor Dana Frank was quoted in North Carolinas
The News & Observer about how difficult it is today to buy
American products. . . . A story about comparative genomics in Genomics
and Proteomics included a sidebar on the UCSC Genome Browser, with
quotes from David Haussler, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator
and professor of computer science. . . . A story on high-tech prosthetic
devices in the Medical Post featured Wentai Liu, professor
of electrical engineering and campus director of the Center for Biomimetic
MicroElectronic Systems. . . . In a story marking the 50th anniversary
of the discovery of rapid-eye movement and its link to dreaming, the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette quoted psychologys Bill Domhoff. An accompanying
article described Domhoffs Internet dream bank and his work documenting
cross-cultural similarities in dreaming. . . . Speaking of dreams, Mens
Fitness Magazine used psychologist Veronica Tonays new
book Every Dream Interpreted for an upcoming article about dream
interpretation.
State and regional
Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood was quoted in a San Jose Mercury
News article about a report from the National Science Board on the
nation's workforce needs in science and engineering. . . . A Los Angeles
Times story about the maturing field of environmental studies quoted
UCSC prof Daniel Press. . . . A story in the Los Angeles Times
about threatened foxes on Santa Cruz Island and golden eagles that are
preying on them includes comments from Brian Latta of the Santa
Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group. The story also ran on the AP wire
service and appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune, Minneapolis Star-Tribune,
Palm Springs Desert Sun, and other papers. . . . A front-page
story in the San Jose Mercury News described the annual illumination
of "Ms. Blue," Long Marine Lab's blue whale skeleton, which
gets decked with Christmas lights for the holiday season. Jeannie Humphrey,
manager of the Seymour Center's Ocean Discovery Shop, is featured in the
article. . . . Associate professor of film and digital media Shelley
Stamp was quoted in the San Francisco Weekly about her $25,000
grant from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to complete
a book about silent film director Lois Weber. An article also appeared
in the Watsonville Register-Pajaronian. . . . The San Francisco
Chronicle reviewed Triptych, a new play by Edna OBrien,
noting that it was "beautifully and sensitively staged by Shakespeare
Santa Cruz artistic director Paul Whitworth."
Local
Womens studies lecturer Peggy Downes Baskin was quoted in
a Salinas Californian article after being named Outstanding Philanthropist
of the Year, along with her husband, Jack Baskin, by the Monterey
Bay chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. . . . Politics
professor Ronnie Gruhn was a guest on KUSP Radio's Talk of the
Bay program, speaking with alumna host Deanna Zachary about
President Bushs claims about the growth of democracy and economic
development around the globe. . . . Another study that keeps getting press
attention is geophysicist Steven Ward's description of the tsunami
that would be generated by an asteroid crashing into the ocean, most recently
covered in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. . . . Brent Haddad of
environmental studies was tapped for his water expertise by the Monterey
County Herald, which covered an idea to recover water from the oil
fields of southern Monterey County. . . . Associate professor of literature
Christopher Connery was cited in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article
about a new UCSC program he designed to send humanities graduate students
into local schools. . . . Manuel Pastor was featured in a Santa
Cruz Sentinel story about the high cost of living on the Central Coast.
. . . Professor of computer engineering Kevin Karplus was quoted
in the Santa Cruz Sentinel in a story about the new graduate degrees
in bioinformatics now offered at UCSC. . . . An article in the Santa
Cruz Sentinel about caves and cave exploring in the Santa Cruz area
featured Greg Stock, an Earth sciences graduate student and cave
expert. . . . Music professor Leta Miller was quoted in a Santa
Cruz Sentinel article about the Ariose Singers, a 16-member a cappella
group that she directs. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story
about Ken Bruland, professor and chair of ocean sciences, and his
appointment to the Ida Benson Lynn Chair in Ocean Health. . . . Theater
arts lecturer Tandy Beal was featured in a Good Times cover
story about The New Nut, her reinvention of The Nutcracker.
