Media Highlights
November 2003
This summary highlights prominent media placements UCSC faculty and staff
have garnered during the month of November 2003.
International
Bradford Holden, a postdoctoral researcher in astronomy and astrophysics,
was quoted in news stories about his team's investigation of a galaxy
considered the biggest, brightest, hottest, and one of the most ancient
star-forming regions yet viewed in the universe. Stories appeared in the
China Post, the Independent (South Africa), the
Everett, Washington, Herald, the Honolulu Star, and the
Honolulu Advertiser.
National
The Chicago Tribune ran a feature article on Beyond Superwoman,
the recent book coauthored by womens studies lecturer Peggy Downes
Baskin. . . . Faye Crosby was interviewed by a New York
Times reporter for a story about executive mentoring. . . . Anthropologist
Susan Harding was quoted in a USA Today article about a
split within the Episcopal Church over gay rights. . . . Ellen Moir
of the New Teacher Center spoke with a Chicago magazine reporter
about teacher burnout. . . . Economist Rob Fairlie was quoted in
an Arkansas Democrat-Gazette article about the factors parents
consider when deciding whether to send their children to public or private
schools. . . . Erik Asphaug, associate professor of Earth sciences,
was quoted in a Philadelphia Inquirer story about asteroid research.
. . . Writing in The Nation, columnist Patricia Williams offered
high praise for Whitewashing Race: The Myth of a Color-Blind Society,
authored by a team of seven that included David Wellman of community
studies and Michael Brown of politics. Williams called the book
"a definitive treatise" and an "extraordinarily in-depth
study."
State and regional
Daniel Costa, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, was
mentioned in San Francisco Chronicle and San Jose Mercury News
stories about the Census of Marine Life, an international effort to understand
the full diversity of ocean life. . . . David Wellman of community
studies was quoted in a San Jose Mercury News article about a proposal
to rename San Joses King Road in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. . . . The San Jose Mercury News reviewed a new book of essays
by history of consciousness professor Donna Haraway titled The
Haraway Reader, calling her "one of the most eloquent writers
about the love-hate relationship between humans and machines you will
ever read.'' . . . Peter Raimondi, professor of ecology and evolutionary
biology, was quoted in an article in the Portland Oregonian about
a new study indicating that sea urchins can live 100 years or more. .
. . Articles in the San Jose Mercury News and the Santa Cruz
Sentinel about coastal erosion and seawalls included quotes from Gary
Griggs, professor of Earth sciences. Griggs was also quoted in a Sentinel
story about a new web site that offers information about the Monterey
Bay National Marine Sanctuary. . . . The Los Angeles Times Book Review
called the new book Changing the Powers that Be by psychologys
Bill Domhoff "a startlingly fresh analysis" by an author
who has "a bracingly firm grasp on the realities of the political
world." . . . The Sacramento Bee ran an interview with American
studies professor Tricia Rose about her new book Longing To
Tell. The San Diego Union-Tribune also ran a profile of Rose
that had originally appeared in the New York Times. . . . Sociologist
Hiroshi Fukurais op-ed about juror diversity appeared in
the San Francisco Chronicle. . . . Manuel Pastor
of Latin American and Latino studies was cited in a Los Angeles Times
article about the challenges facing Latinos trying to achieve the American
Dream in Los Angeles. Pastor wrote the summary of the United Way report.
Local
Politics professor Ronnie Gruhn was a guest on KUSP Radio's Talk
of the Bay program, speaking with host Deanna Zachary about President
Bushs claims about the growth of democracy and economic development
around the globe. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about
research led by James Zachos, professor of Earth sciences, to characterize
a major episode of global warming that took place 55 million years ago.
. . . Art lecturer Paul Rangell was quoted in Santa Cruz Sentinel
and Watsonville Register-Pajaronian articles about being honored
as 2003 Distinguished Artist of the Year by the Santa Cruz Art League.
. . . The Sentinel and the Register-Pajaronian ran stories
about the naming of one of the original research buildings at Long Marine
Laboratory in honor of William Doyle, professor emeritus of biology
and founder of the Institute of Marine Sciences. . . . Music professor
Fred Lieberman was quoted in a Santa Cruz Metro article
about the multiphonic singing of Tibets Gyuto monks.
