International

Research on the legacy of industrial whaling and its impact on the ecosystem of the North Pacific has received widespread media attention. Marine ecologist Jim Estes and physiologist Terrie Williams were featured in stories in the Independent (London), Belfast Telegraph, Sydney Morning Herald, New Zealand Herald, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Arizona Republic, Salem Statesman Journal, San Jose Mercury News, San Mateo County Times, BBC News Online, Nature News Online, Discovery Channel Online, and ABC Science Online. . . . Economist Nirvikar Singh penned an op-ed for The Independent about India’s economy in the global context. . . . Economist David Kaun fielded numerous interview requests about the recall election, including a query from Semana magazine in Bogota, Colombia.

National

The New York Times profiled American studies professor and department chair Tricia Rose in an article titled "Class with the ‘Ph.D. Diva.’" . . . Ralph Berger, emeritus professor of biology, was interviewed on NPR's Morning Edition by his former Ph.D. student, science correspondent Joe Palca. Palca's entertaining report on the 50th anniversary of the discovery of REM sleep can be heard online at NPR's web site. . . . Daniel Costa, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, was quoted in a story about the effects of sonar on whales that ran in a large number of newspapers, including the Detroit Free Press, Houston Chronicle, Lexington Herald-Leader, Miami Herald, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Saint Paul Pioneer Press, Contra Costa Times, San Jose Mercury News, and San Diego Union-Tribune. Costa was also quoted in a related story that ran in the San Francisco Chronicle. . . . Kresge College provost/journalism lecturer Conn Hallinan had an article published in Foreign Policy in Focus about the U.S. suit against the European Union over its moratorium on genetically modified foods. . . Geophysicist Steven Ward was quoted in a Philadelphia Inquirer article about the possibility of a tsunami on the East Coast. . . . David Wellman of community studies was quoted in an Associated Press story about Proposition 54. . . . Adjunct professor of computer science Arthur Keller was featured in a segment on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer about Wi-Fi (wireless Internet) networks. . . . The Washington Times and the San Francisco Chronicle reported on a $300,000 estate gift to the UCSC Library’s Special Collections archive of renowned science fiction writer Robert Heinlein, and the selection of William Patterson Jr. as the new campus Heinlein Scholar. . . . Economist David Kaun appeared on radio stations KAAA and KZZZ in Bullhead City, Arizona; WHAS in Louisville, Kentucky; WPKN in Bridgeport, Connecticut; and Radio Free Santa Cruz locally to talk about the California recall election.

State and regional

Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood and Nancy Aebersold, director of the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC), were quoted in a San Jose Mercury News article about the launch of the first northern California web site for jobs in higher education--founded by UCSC. Articles also appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Business Journal, Contra Costa Times and Santa Cruz Sentinel, and the story was additionally covered by KGO, KLIV, and KSCO Radio. . . . Slawek Tulaczyk, associate professor of Earth sciences, was featured in a Los Angeles Times article about changes in California's glaciers. While Sierra Nevada glaciers are in rapid retreat, those on Mt. Shasta are growing. The story also ran in the San Francisco Chronicle, San Mateo County Times, Boston Globe, and Dallas-Fort Worth Star-Telegram. . . . The San Francisco Chronicle ran a full-page profile on associate professor of history Dilip Basu and his work with the UCSC Satyajit Ray Film and Study Collection to preserve the renowned Indian film director’s films and legacy. . . . Manuel Pastor of Latin American and Latino studies coauthored an opinion piece about Proposition 54 for the San Jose Mercury News. . . . UCSC was mentioned in a pair of articles in the San Francisco Chronicle about efforts to foster interdisciplinary collaborations at top universities. Michael Isaacson, associate dean of research and graduate studies in the engineering school and Kapany Professor of Optoelectronics, was quoted in one of the stories. Isaacson was also interviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle, Santa Cruz Sentinel, and KSBW TV for stories about UCSC's participation in a new national center that will focus on developing implantable devices to overcome disabilities such as blindness and paralysis. Stories about the new center also appeared in the Los Angeles Times and San Jose Mercury News online. . . . Assistant theater arts professor David Cuthbert was featured in a San Diego Union-Tribune article about theater and lighting design. . . . Jim Estes, adjunct professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, was quoted in a story in the San Jose Mercury News about changes in the Monterey Bay Aquarium's policy on sea otters. Estes supports the aquarium's decision to focus the efforts of its sea otter rehabilitation program on animals with a good chance of adding to the breeding population of the species. . . . Susanne Jonas of Latin American and Latino studies was interviewed by the Orange County Register for a story about Guatemalan immigrant communities in the United States. . . . The San Jose Mercury News noted two memorial events at UCSC to honor the late Mel Wong, professor of dance in the Theater Arts Department since 1989.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a front-page story profiling University Relations vice chancellor Ron Suduiko and the campus's fundraising success this past year; Alison Galloway, chair of the Academic Senate, was also quoted in the story. . . . Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article on the $500,000 the campus has raised recently for student scholarships. Kenneth Feingold, chair of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation, also talked to the reporter about alumni contributions. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel published a front-page article on UCSC's selection of William Patterson Jr. to organize and promote the Robert Heinlein Archive, housed in McHenry Library’s Special Collections. . . . Astronomer Claire Max was featured in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article about her research on black holes. . . . Caroline Pomeroy, a research scientist in the Institute of Marine Sciences, was quoted in stories in the Monterey Herald and Salinas Californian about a report she coauthored on the role of the Moss Landing fishing industry in the local economy. . . . A story in the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal about UCSC's partnership with NASA Ames in the University Affiliated Research Center included quotes from Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood and William Berry, deputy director of the Silicon Valley Center. . . . An article about memorial events to celebrate the life and art of the late Mel Wong, professor of dance in the Theater Arts Department since 1989, appeared in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. . . . Don Croll, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, and his research on whales in Monterey Bay were the subject of a column in the Salinas Californian. . . . Psychology’s Anthony Pratkanis was interviewed by KSBW TV about the recall. He also hosted a Swedish educational TV channel that filmed on campus in October. . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story on the success the men's soccer team is having this season. Senior Dan Chamberlain, junior Eric Bucchere, and coach Paul Holocher were interviewed for the story. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel and the Register-Pajaronian ran articles about the first Master of Fine Arts degree program in Digital Arts/New Media to be offered at UCSC. . . . Sociology’s Craig Reinarman has appeared on local television several times to discuss medical marijuana. . . . Music Department lecturer Peter Elsea was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel story about electronic music. . . . Economist Lori Kletzer appeared on KUSP’s Talk of the Bay program to discuss trade liberalization and job loss. . . . The Good Times extensively quoted associate professor of history Dilip Basu in an article about famed Indian film director Satyajit Ray. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported that UCSC received a $100,000 humanities grant for a five-week summer seminar for college teachers that will focus on the writing of Charles Dickens. . . . KSBW TV interviewed statistician David Draper for a story about the California Lottery. . . . .
