Writing in Asia Times, David Isenberg referred extensively to an analysis of the appeal of Islamic radicalism penned by Middle East expert Alan Richards of environmental studies that was published by the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College. . . . The Gazette (Montreal, Quebec), the Guelph Mercury (Ontario, Canada), and the Boston Globe quoted American studies professor Tricia Rose in articles about fashion choices made by pop stars to promote their careers in the music industry.

National

Astrophysicist Stan Woosley was interviewed on campus by a PBS TV production crew working on a program for the science documentary series NOVA. The production crew had previously interviewed astronomer Sandra Faber, a consultant for the program, at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii. . . . The St. Petersburg Times tapped Michael Brown of politics for comment on the recall of Gov. Gray Davis. . . . Erika Zavaleta of environmental studies has received media attention for her study on the effects of global warming on grassland ecosystems, conducted while she was a doctoral student at Stanford. Reports appeared in Life Science Weekly, Science Letter, and elsewhere. . . . Black Enterprise cited research by economist Rob Fairlie in an article about African American business ownership. . . . Professor of art history Catherine Soussloff was featured on Chicago Public Radio’s syndicated talk-show program, Odyssey, speaking about her book, The Absolute Artist: The Historiography of a Concept. . . . The Chicago Tribune quoted American studies professor Tricia Rose in an article about fashion and the music industry. Rose also was tapped for a Miami Herald piece about the globalization of hip-hop culture. . . . Daniel Costa, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, was quoted in an article about whale populations on Discovery News online. . . . Manuel Pastor of Latin American and Latino studies discussed Argentina’s relationship with the International Monetary Fund on the Marketplace Morning Report, produced by Minnesota Public Radio. . . . The Associated Press covered a recent talk by economist Carl Walsh about monetary policy and uncertainty. . . . Finkelstein found the chicks are eating paint chips flaking off of old buildings on the islands. . . . Sociology lecturer Mike Males appeared in the Tulsa World in a piece entitled, "Are American Girls Becoming More Violent?". . . The Argus Leader noted an appearance by assistant theater arts professor Alma Martinez at the University of South Dakota to discuss "The Myth of the Hollywood Latino Stereotype." . . . History of consciousness professor Angela Davis was featured in a Miami Herald article about her speech at Florida International University calling for an end to prisons. . . . American Libraries noted the retirement of University Librarian Allan Dyson after 24 years at UCSC.

Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood was widely quoted in news stories about the $330 million University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) which UCSC will manage under a contract with NASA Ames Research Center. Stories about the UARC, some of which also featured quotes from the center's managing director, William Berry, ran in the San Francisco Chronicle, Oakland Tribune, San Jose Mercury News, Santa Cruz Sentinel, Monterey County Herald, Contra Costa Times, Tri-Valley Herald, Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal, Pajaronian, Washington Computer Week, The Scientist magazine, and SpaceRef.com.. . . Former chancellor Karl Pister was quoted in a California Journal article about the presidency of Richard Atkinson. . . . Since the publication of their new book Whitewashing Race, Michael Brown and David Wellman have been busy fielding media calls from the Associated Press, KRON-TV in San Francisco, and radio stations in San Jose, Napa, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, as well as NPR affiliate WNJT in Trenton, New Jersey. . . . The San Jose Mercury News tapped sociologist Marcia Millman for comment about the trend toward women taking their husband’s name when they marry. . . . The Sacramento Bee interviewed New Teacher Center executive director Ellen Moir for a story about the tough job market facing new teachers this fall. The Los Angeles Times relied heavily on comments from psychology’s Anthony Pratkanis for a story about the campaign strategy of former gubernatorial hopeful Peter Ueberroth. . . . Gary Griggs, director of the Institute of Marine Sciences, was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel story about renewed funding for UCSC's Center for Integrated Marine Technologies. Griggs also discussed the center's research on the Monterey Bay ecosystem on the Talk of the Bay program on KUSP Radio. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported that history professor Edmund Burke III, psychology professor Barbara Rogoff, and literature professor Helene Moglen were awarded research funds and appointments as presidential chairs by Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood. . . . Beyond Superwoman, the new book coauthored by women’s studies lecturer Peggy Downes Baskin, was reviewed in the Salinas Californian. . . .
