Media Highlights
June 2004
This summary highlights prominent media placements UCSC faculty and staff
have garnered during the month of June 2004.
International
David Haussler, professor of biomolecular engineering, was quoted
in an article in New Scientist magazine about highly conserved
DNA sequences in animals.
National
Sociologist Hiroshi Fukurai was interviewed by the Christian
Science Monitor about Japan's recent decision to reintroduce the jury
system, a change that will take effect by 2009. Fukurai was also interviewed
by the Daily Gazette in New York about strategies to create racial
diversity on juries. . . . The marine natural products research of Phil
Crews, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, is included in an
article about the search for medicines from the sea in the May issue of
Smithsonian magazine. . . . Newsday published a feature
article about history of consciousness professor Angela Davis,
focusing on her life and most recent book, Are Prisons Obsolete?
. . . The Chronicle of Higher Education ran a beautifully illustrated
story about the Science Illustration Program and its transfer to
the UCSC Extension Program due to state budget cuts. Program coordinator
Ann Caudle and several of this year's students were quoted in the
story. . . . Economist Rob Fairlie was interviewed by a reporter
at the Philadelphia Inquirer for an article about black business
ownership. . . . Also in economics, Lori Kletzer was featured in
a National Journal special report that identified the "people
whose ideas who will help shape debate on 10 important issues of the day."
Kletzer was singled out for her work on workforce quality. . . . Rem
Stone, director of operations at Lick Observatory, was profiled in
a feature story about the observatory on Mt. Hamilton in Sky &
Telescope magazine. Several of UCSC's astronomy faculty were also
mentioned or quoted in the story, including Sandra Faber, Steven Vogt,
and Claire Max. . . . Slate magazines recent article
about the nations on-again, off-again love affair with milk mentioned
work by sociologist Melanie DuPuis. . . . American studies professor
and department chair Tricia Rose was quoted in the Orlando Sentinel
about sexist images and degrading lyrics in rap music. . . . The New
York Times ran a story about the folded paper structures illustrating
mathematical principles (now called "computational origami")
that were created by the late David Huffman, who was a professor
of computer science at UCSC. One expert in the field describes Huffman's
work as "awesome." His daughter Elise Huffman, a senior
graphic artist with UCSC Extension, is quoted in the story, as is Michael
Tanner, a former colleague of Huffman's at UCSC. . . . The (Syracuse,
N.Y.) Post-Standard cited a study by sociologist Mike Males
in their coverage of a teen curfew proposal. . . . The (Massachusetts)
Sunday Telegram profiled organic farmer Joe Lambro, a graduate
of the the Farm's Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture.
State and regional
Peter Raimondi, professor and chair of ecology and evolutionary
biology, was featured in a story in the San Luis Obispo Tribune
about the impacts of human visitors on tidepool ecosystems. . . . Psychologist
Craig Haney participated in a Commonwealth Club panel discussion
about prison abuse in Iraq that was broadcast on KQED Radio in San Francisco,
and he was scheduled for an interview on KUSP Radio. . . . Sociologist
Mike Males penned an op-ed for the Los Angeles Times that
countered the surging stereotype of teen girls as mean bullies. On the
contrary, wrote Males, girls today are no more--and usually less--criminal
and belligerent than girls a generation ago. . . . The San Jose Mercury
News ran a profile of David Haussler, professor of biomolecular
engineering, after he was awarded the Allen Newell Award for his pioneering
work in computational biology. . . . Music professor Fredric Lieberman
was quoted in a Los Angeles Times article about donations to UCSC
by two foundations established by members of the Grateful Dead to help
preserve the late composer Lou Harrisons archive in the librarys
Special Collections. . . . Sociologist Melanie DuPuis, editor of
a new book about air pollution, appeared on KPFA Radio to discuss the
history of air pollution policy. . . . American studies professor and
department chair Tricia Rose was quoted in a San Francisco Chronicle
article about efforts to involve the hip-hop generation in mainstream
politics. The Chronicle also quoted American studies professor
Judy Yung in a piece about the Bay Areas Square and Circle
Club, one of the oldest Chinese women's service organizations in the United
States. . . . The San Francisco Chronicle also featured Alan Chadwick
Garden manager Orin Martin in a story about the array of citrus
that can be cultivated year-round by home gardeners. . . . Francisco
Hernandez was quoted in a California Journal article about
the impact of UC fee hikes on low-income students.
Local
The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a lengthy profile of Acting Chancellor
Martin M. Chemers and an editorial on the positive mark he has already
made in the community. . . . Donald Croll, assistant professor
of ecology and evolutionary biology, was featured on KUSP Radio's Life
on the Bay program in a week-long series about Croll's research on
marine life in Monterey Bay. Croll was also quoted in a story in the Santa
Cruz Sentinel and in a recent "On the Bay" column in the
Watsonville Register-Pajaronian about the early arrival in the
bay of blue whales this year. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran
an article about history major Martin Smith, winner of the Melkonian
Prize, the top honor of the UCSC Humanities Undergraduate Research Awards,
describing his research on the Vietnam War. . . . Arts and Lectures director
Michelle Witt and music lecturer Mary Jane Cope were quoted
in the Santa Cruz Sentinel about a benefit concert to raise money
for a community school for homeless children. . . . The Santa Cruz
Sentinel ran a story about UCSC's Science Illustration Program, with
quotes from program director Ann Caudle and several current students.
. . . Michael Urban of politics appeared on KUSPs Talk
of the Bay program, discussing the popularity of the blues in Russia.
. . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a piece about UCSC alum Kent
Nagano choosing music professor and Arts Division dean Edward Houghtons
new transcription of a Renaissance mass by composer Johannes Ockeghem
to open the 2004 Ojai Music Festival. . . . Sociologist Mike Males
penned an opinion piece for the Santa Cruz Sentinel that cited
misconceptions about local rates of teen violence, suicide, and drug abuse.
. . . Peter Raimondi, professor and chair of ecology and evolutionary
biology, was quoted in an article about proposals for a desalination plant
on Monterey Bay in Metro Santa Cruz. Raimondi has studied the potential
impacts of a desalination plant on marine life. . . . The Santa Cruz
Metro praised the Music Departments growing opera program in
a review that credited music lecturer Brian Staufenbiel and Professor
Nicole Paiement with leading an inspiring production of Kurt Weills
Street Scene. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel included a profile
of Heather Mietz Egli, a UCSC alum and office manager at CATS instructional
computing, in a story about high-tech employees who have moved to Santa
Cruz from Silicon Valley.
