Professor Emeritus Barry McLaughlin of psychology was quoted in a story in Tokyo’s Daily Yomiuri about the way young children learn languages. . . . In an article about rising oil prices, Investors Chronicle cited research by economist Menzie Chinn on the impact oil price hikes have on inflation in the United Kingdom. . . . The Guardian (U.K.) contacted research professor Bill Domhoff of psychology to interview him about his work studying dreams.

National

Christina Ravelo, associate professor of ocean sciences, was quoted in news stories about her research on a major climate transition that took place about 2 million years ago. Stories from UPI and Scripps Howard News Service ran in the Washington Post and other newspapers, as well as online news sites Environment News, Innovations Report, and Science Daily. . . . Psychology’s Craig Haney has been in demand regarding the prison abuse scandal in Iraq. The New York Times was the first to quote Haney in a story about the famous 1971 Stanford Prison Experiment, in which students posing as prison guards abused student "inmates," which triggered calls from CNN, NBC’s Dateline, the Baltimore Sun, MSNBC, USA Today, People magazine, Dateline NBC, the International Herald Tribune, Newsweek, the Associated Press, and KQED Radio in San Francisco. Haney also was quoted by the San Francisco Chronicle in a story about jury selection. . . . The New York Times also interviewed psychologist Elliot Aronson, an expert on social influence, for a story about the Iraqi prison scandal and the soldiers who found the strength not to abuse inmates. . . . Research by David Haussler, professor of biomolecular engineering, postdoctoral researcher Gill Bejerano, and others on ultra-conserved elements in the human genome was reported in the UPI wire service, the San Francisco Chronicle, and numerous online news sites, including BBC News, Medical Science News, Bio-IT Bulletin, Innovations Report, Science Daily, and Bio.com, Genetics and Environmental Law Weekly, Law and Health Weekly, Obesity, Fitness and Wellness Week, Biotech Law Weekly, Genomics and Genetics Weekly, Health Business Week, Medicine and Law Weekly, Genetics and Environmental Business Week, Biotech Week, and Health and Medicine Week. In addition, Haussler and Bejerano taped an interview with ScienCentral News, which produces science news stories for TV newscasts on ABC and NBC local affiliates nationwide. . . . The Chicago Tribune ran a story about the return of three sea lions to Brookfield Zoo after more than three years at Long Marine Lab, where they took part in research by Terrie Williams, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. Williams and head trainer Brett Long were both quoted in the article. . . . Literature professor Paul Skenazy contributed several book reviews to the Washington Post. . . . National Public Radio interviewed economist Rob Fairlie for a piece on job loss and entrepreneurship. . . . Film and digital media professor and department chair Chip Lord was quoted in a Los Angeles Times article about the Ant Farm, the innovative architecture collective he cofounded in 1968. . . . Newsday quoted history of consciousness professor Angela Davis in an article about teaching assistants rallying for better wages and health care at Stony Brook University, where Davis spent a month as a distinguished visiting professor. . . . In an Arizona Republic article about outsourcing, economist Lori Kletzer discussed the wage losses experienced by people who’ve lost jobs in the manufacturing sector and found reemployment in different industries. . . . Music professor Nicole Paiement was featured in an Idaho Statesman article about her role as a mentor to a former UCSC student who is now a professor of music at Boise State University. . . . An article in Implement & Tractor cited the new book, Agrarian Dreams: The Paradox of Organic Farming in California, by Julie Guthman of community studies. . . . Nancy Aebersold, director of the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC), was quoted in a Chronicle of Higher Education article about helping dual-career couples find academic jobs. . . . Professor Emeritus Michael Soulé was mentioned in a story about species in crisis that appeared in the Oregonian. . . . UCSC’s decision to serve fair-trade coffee in campus dining halls was included in a recent New York Times story about the Fair Trade food movement. . . . Roland Tharp of the UCSC-based Center for Research on Education, Diversity & Excellence was featured in three stories about effective instruction that appeared in the Correctional Education Bulletin.

State and regional

Professor of history Dana Frank was quoted in an Orange County Register article about the first-ever academic conference devoted entirely to discussing and analyzing Wal-Mart and its effect on society. . . . The San Jose Mercury News and Contra Costa Times ran stories about the falling silver levels in San Francisco Bay, quoting Russell Flegal, professor of environmental toxicology. . . . Terry Schalk, adjunct professor of physics, was quoted in a story in the Contra Costa Times about a Science and Technology Fair at a high school in Oakley. Schalk and others from the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics presented a tesla coil demonstration at the event. . . . The Sacramento Bee tapped Ellen Moir of the UCSC New Teacher Center to discuss the classroom management challenges that confound many new teachers. . . . Sociologist Craig Reinarman’s recent study about marijuana use was covered in several dailies in the East Bay, including the Alameda Times-Star, the Fremont Argus, the Tri-Valley Herald, and the Hayward Daily Review. . . . An article in the San Francisco Chronicle about peregrine falcons nesting in the city for the first time in 70 years featured Brian Walton, coordinator of the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, and David Gregoire, a research associate with the group. The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about the predatory bird group's outreach programs in schools, featuring program manager Glenn Stewart and Sophie, the tame peregrine that is an integral part of his presentations. . . . The San Francisco Chronicle tapped economist Michael Dooley for comment about the mushrooming U.S. trade gap.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel and Watsonville Register-Pajaronian ran stories about David Haussler, professor of biomolecular engineering, who won the 2003 Allen Newell Award. . . . And a story in the Good Times about genomic research at UCSC featured Haussler, research scientist Jim Kent, and graduate student Robert Baertsch. The researchers are studying the genetic similarities and differences between humans and other animals. . . . Results of sociologist Craig Reinarman’s study of marijuana use in San Francisco and Amsterdam received front-page coverage in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, as well as stories in the Oakland Tribune, on Bay City News, and on KSBW-TV. . . .
