Media Highlights
April 2004
This summary highlights prominent media placements UCSC faculty and staff
have garnered during the month of April 2004.
International
Lisa Sloan, professor of Earth sciences, and graduate student
Jacob Sewall were featured in news stories about their findings
that the melting of Arctic sea ice may lead to reduced rain and snowfall
in the American West. Stories appeared in New Scientist magazine
and in the Vancouver Sun, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Kansas
City Star, San Jose Mercury News, Contra Costa Times, and Monterey
County Herald. Sloan was also interviewed on KSCO Radio. . . . Italys
classical guitar magazine GuitArt International ran a feature
article about music lecturer Mesut Özgens multimedia
project, New Dimensions in Classical Guitar, detailing his collaboration
with assistant film and digital media professor Gustavo Vazquez,
music lecturer Peter Elsea, and assistant theater arts professor
David Cuthbert. . . . Economist Mike Dooley's views about
the U.S. dollar in the global economy were featured in a Financial
Times column. . . . In community studies, research by Julie Guthman
was discussed in Organics, a British trade journal aimed at a U.S.
audience. . . . In a story about the impact of outsourcing, the Economic
Times of India cited a study by economist Lori Kletzer that
found that in the 1980s and 1990s, two-thirds of workers who lost jobs
in manufacturing industries hit by overseas competition earned less on
their next job. . . . John Wilkes, director of the Science Communication
Program, was featured in an article about science journalism in Bridges,
a publication of the Austrian Office of Science and Technology.
National
The New York Times quoted political scientist Bob Meister
in a story about whether U.S. aid to Iraqi insurgents bred future terrorists.
. . . Gerald Barnett, director of the Office for Management of
Intellectual Property, was the subject of a profile in the Chronicle
of Higher Education. The story focused on Barnett's unconventional
approach to technology transfer, and included quotes from vice chancellor
for research Robert Miller, chemistry professor Glenn Millhauser,
and history professor Alan Christy. . . . Associate professor of
literature Kirsten Silva Gruesz was featured in a Chronicle
of Higher Education article about the profusion of buzzwords in the
field of American studies. . . . Psychology instructor Donald Saposnek
was quoted in a Columbia News Service story that appeared in the Chicago
Tribune and other newspapers about an innovative martial arts therapy
that helps children with mild behavioral disorders. . . . National Public
Radios Morning Edition program tapped sociology instructor
Mike Males for comment on teen curfews. . . . Brian Walton,
coordinator of the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, was interviewed
by Earthwatch, a syndicated program broadcast on public radio stations,
about the group's efforts to reduce the number of birds killed by wind
turbines. . . . David Deamer, professor emeritus of chemistry and
biochemistry and acting chair of biomolecular engineering, was quoted
in a Chicago Tribune story about researchers trying to create artificial
life in the laboratory, and in a San Jose Mercury News story about
the prospects for life on Mars. . . . Economist Lori Kletzer
made the front page of the Wall Street Journal in a story about
the outsourcing of jobs. . . . Gary Glatzmaier, professor of Earth
sciences, was featured in a Philadelphia Inquirer article about
unanswered questions in science. Glatzmaier described the mysteries of
Earth's magnetic field. . . . Craig Haney of psychology was interviewed
by a New York Times Magazine writer about supermax prisons, and
a reporter for New York magazine called him to discuss how inmates
cope with being in prison for life. . . . History of consciousness professor
Angela Davis was profiled in Clevelands Call and Post. .
. . Surfer magazine ran a news story about Terrie Williams,
professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, who took some time off
from studying marine mammals to look at the physiology of surfing with
her physiology classes. Williams recorded the heart-pounding effects of
big-wave surfing by putting heart-rate monitors on local surfers, including
alumna Sarah Gerhardt, while they rode the giant waves at Mavericks.
. . . Erika Zavaleta of environmental studies was quoted in articles
in the Albuquerque newspapers about the economics of salt cedar eradication.
. . . American studies professor and department chair Tricia Rose
was quoted in the Kansas City Star about the influence of pop star
Britney Spears. . . . Education Week recently ran two stories on
UCSCs Center for Research on Education, Diversity, and Excellence.
One focused on the career of CREDE director Roland Tharp, who has
spent decades researching classroom strategies that address the needs
of students who are most likely to be "left behind." The other
article showed how the centers work is being put into action at
Starlight Elementary School, in Watsonville, Calif.
State and regional
Craig Haney of psychology has fielded numerous media inquiries,
including calls from the Associated Press, Los Angeles Times, and
United Press International about the 20-month lockdown of Latino inmates
at Folsom State Prison. Haney was also interviewed by the Los Angeles
Times about prison gangs, and he was prominently quoted in
a Modesto Bee article about the jurors in the trial of Scott Peterson.
. . . The San Francisco Chronicle noted that theater arts professor
Mark Franko was the choreographer of Caesura, a March Bay
Area production. . . . Articles in the San Jose Mercury News and
the Berkeley Daily Planet about touchscreen voting machine software
developed by the Open Voting Consortium included quotes from computer
scientist Arthur Keller, who helped found the consortium. . . .
In a lengthy analysis of the 9/11 commission that appeared in the San
Jose Mercury News, Dan Wirls of politics said the commission
needs to wrap up its work this summer with a report that goes beyond making
merely symbolic recommendations. . . . History of consciousness professor
Barbara Epstein and Hebrew lecturer Tammi Rossman-Benjamin
were quoted in the San Jose Mercury News and Contra Costa Times
about the departure of Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood. . . . Renee
Tajima-Peña of community studies penned a column for the San
Jose Mercury News about her husbands quest to piece together
his fragmented family, which she documented in the film My Journey
Home, which aired on PBS in early April. . . . Shakespeare Santa Cruz
artistic director Paul Whitworth was quoted in the San Jose
Mercury News about the new 2004 summer season lineup.
Local
Broadcast media picked up the story of an optical glucose sensor developed
by chemistry professor Bakthan Singaram: Singaram was interviewed
on KSCO Radio, and KSMS TV in Monterey interviewed Singaram, visiting
researcher Rich Wessling, and chemistry professor Todd Wipke.
. . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a lengthy profile of filmmaker
and community studies prof Renee Tajima-Peña on the eve
of the PBS television premiere of two of her films. The San Jose Mercury
News also wrote about Tajima-Peñas work in conjunction
with the broadcasts. . . . Sociologys Ben Crow was quoted
in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article about new alternatives to traditional
publications that have become available to faculty researchers. . . .
The Santa Cruz Sentinel noted that music professor Linda Burman-Hall
was a judge in the Santa Cruz Baroque Festivals second annual Youth
Chamber Music Contest held at UCSC. . . . Brian Walton, coordinator
of the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, was quoted in a Santa
Cruz Sentinel story about the group's efforts to reduce the number
of birds killed by wind turbines. . . . Music lecturer Mesut Özgen
was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article announcing that he
and theater arts lecturer Tandy Beal were named artists-in-residence
for a second year at the Henry J. Mello Center for the Performing Arts
in Watsonville. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about
research by Anujan Varma, professor of computer engineering, to
develop an optical router for the Internet. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel
quoted music professor David Evan Jones in a story describing his
recent trip to Asia with music professor Nicole Paiement and music
lecturer Brian Staufenbiel to oversee the Korean premiere of his
first opera. . . . Robert Klevan, music lecturer and new education
director for the Monterey Jazz Festival, was quoted in a Monterey County
Herald article about the festivals 34th annual National High
School Jazz Competition. . . . Janet Bryer of the Center
for Agroecology & Sustainable Foods Systems was featured in Monterey
Herald coverage of efforts by Pajaro Valley farmers to reduce water
runoff from agricultural lands. . . . Raymie Stata, assistant professor
of computer science, was featured in a San Jose Mercury News story
about software he developed for managing e-mail (Bloomba from Stata Labs,
a company Stata cofounded). . . . Biologist Don Croll was quoted
in a Santa Cruz Sentinel story about springtime changes in Monterey
Bay. . . . Gary Griggs, director of the Institute of Marine Sciences,
and Mark Carr, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary
biology, were quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel story about a report
issued by the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy. . . . Film and digital
media professor and department chair Chip Lord was quoted in a
Santa Cruz Sentinel article about the renovation of the Communications
Building, the new headquarters for the Film and Digital Media Department.
. . . Barry Sinervo, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology,
was interviewed by KSBW-TV about the Santa Cruz long-toed salamander,
an endangered species discovered on the site of planned construction work
at Aptos High School.
