March 2004
This summary highlights prominent media placements UCSC faculty and staff
have garnered during the month of March 2004.
International
Economist Ken Kletzers views about collective action clauses,
which have been heralded as a breakthrough in the sovereign debt restructuring
crisis, were featured in the December issue of Latin Finance. .
. . Chemistry professors Bakthan Singaram and Todd Wipke
were quoted in news stories about an optical glucose sensor developed
in Singaram's lab. Stories appeared in the Medical News U.K., WebIndia.com,
Medical News Today, Washington Times, U.P.I. news wire, and
the Santa Cruz Sentinel. . . . A story in New Scientist
magazine about new findings that shed light on the first moments after
the Big Bang included quotes from astronomer Piero Madau. . . .
Pedro Castillo, professor of history and member of the National
Endowment for the Humanities Council, was quoted in a London Times
Higher Education Supplement article about the Republican Rights
"hijack of U.S. science."
National
Professor of ocean sciences Peggy Delaney was quoted in an article
that ran in newspapers around the country about the new Integrated Ocean
Drilling Program, an international cooperative research program she helped
plan. The story appeared in the Seattle Times, Philadelphia Inquirer,
Charlotte Observer, and Duluth News-Tribune, Kansas City
Star, and other Knight-Ridder newspapers. . . . Economist Lori
Kletzers proposal to provide wage insurance to workers who are
displaced by foreign competition was outlined in a New York Times
article about foreign competition and job loss as well as in articles
in the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and National Journal.
. . . Assistant professor of film and digital media L. S. Kim
was a featured guest on National Public Radios On Point program
to discuss the cultural impact of HBOs television series Sex
and the City. . . . Psychologys Craig Haney was quoted
in a Tampa Tribune article about the needs of people released from
death row and the lack of support programs to help them make the transition
to life outside. . . . The Chronicle of Higher Education quoted
history professor Peter Kenez in a story about the scholarly debate
during the cold war about what fueled the survival of the Soviet regime.
. . . Astronomer Garth Illingworth was quoted in stories
about the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, a spectacular new image from the Hubble
Space Telescope, in Science magazine and on the web site Space.com.
. . . Mike Males of sociology was quoted in the Las Vegas
Review-Journal about new findings regarding adolescent brain development.
. . . The Allentown Morning Call covered a speech by history of
consciousness professor Angela Davis at Pennsylvanias Lehigh
University, where she called the U.S. prison system an outmoded form of
punishment and urged that it be replaced by a multifaceted approach to
rehabilitation. Davis was also featured in a Binghamton Press &
Sun-Bulletin article about a speech she gave at Binghamton University
urging students to make a difference. . . . Donald Potts, professor
of ecology and evolutionary biology, was quoted in an article in Nature
magazine about surprising new findings regarding the relationships among
corals of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. . . . Ronnie Gruhn of
politics discussed events in Haiti on the Democracy Now radio program.
. . . Womens studies professor Bettina Aptheker contributed
two reviews of books about women in Afghanistan to the Womens
Review of Books. . . . Math professor Richard Montgomery collaborated
with Stanford researchers on a study covered by National Public Radio
and Science News--a mathematical analysis suggesting that a coin
toss is inherently biased. . . . The Chronicle of Higher Education
talked with Greta Gibson of education and anthropology for a story
about two new books that discuss immigration and assimilation issues.
. . . Darrell Long, professor of computer science, was quoted in
news stories in the Santa Fe New Mexican, Albuquerque Journal,
and Associated Press news wires about problems with a supercomputer at
the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Long worked on an expert review of
the Department of Energy's national supercomputing program. . . . Erika
Zavaleta of environmental studies was profiled in the spring edition
of Nature Conservancy, as part of a feature on leading conservation
scientists. . . . An article about tsunamis in Science News magazine
included a section on research by geophysicist Steven Ward. . .
. American studies professor and department chair Tricia Rose was
quoted in the Chicago Tribune and Denver Post
about the influence of pop star Britney Spears.
State and regional
The San Francisco Chronicle ran a feature story on the innovative
architecture collective, the Ant Farm, noting that it was cofounded by
Chip Lord, chair of the Film and Digital Media Department. . .
. The Contra Costa Times published an article about music lecturer
(and San Francisco Ballet concertmaster) Roy Malan after he was
named concertmaster of the California Symphony. . . . An article in the
Los Angeles Times about efforts to save the endangered Channel
Islands foxes included a quote from Brian Latta, a biologist with
the Predatory Bird Research Group, who is trying to remove from the island
the golden eagles that have been preying on the foxes. . . . The San
Francisco Chronicles coverage of the impact of jobs moving offshore
was enhanced by analysis provided by economist Lori Kletzer, whose
work was also covered in a report by Inter Press Service. . . . Also in
economics, David Kaun was interviewed by KPFA Radio, critiquing
Bushs justification of his tax cuts. . . . Pete Raimondi,
professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, was quoted in a story in
the Orange County Register about the effects of coastal power plants
on marine life.
Local
The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a lengthy interview with Chancellor
M.R.C. Greenwood covering the successes and challenges of her eight
years at UCSC and her expectations for her new position with UC President
Robert Dynes. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story
about the Hubble Space Telescope featuring Garth Illingworth, professor
of astronomy and astrophysics. Illingworth has also been quoted in stories
about the telescope in Aviation Week and Space Technology
and Space News (at Space.com). . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel
ran a news item about Peggy Delaney, professor of ocean sciences,
who was elected a fellow of the American Geophysical Union. . . . The
Santa Cruz Sentinel and Metro Santa Cruz ran feature articles
about music lecturer Mesut Ozgens multimedia project New
Dimensions in Classical Guitar, describing his collaboration with assistant
film and digital media professor Gustavo Vazquez, music lecturer
Peter Elsea, and assistant theater arts professor David Cuthbert.
The Register-Pajaronian published a lengthy review of the group's
concert. . . . Arboretum director Dan Harder was quoted
in a Santa Cruz Sentinel story about flowering plum trees heralding
the approach of spring in Santa Cruz. Harder and curator Melinda Johnson
were quoted in another Santa Cruz Sentinel story about gardening
in a Mediterranean climate. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel gave
a rave review to the UCSC theater production Ruy Blas, praising
the "incomparable imagination" of its director, theater arts
professor and department chair Danny Scheie. . . .Music lecturer
Barry Green was featured in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article
about his upcoming bass recital as part of the Cabrillo College Distinguished
Artist series. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel noted that music lecturer
Robert Klevan was recently named as jazz education director for the
Monterey Jazz Festival.
