Media Highlights
February 2004
This summary highlights prominent media placements UCSC faculty and staff
have garnered during the month of February 2004.
International
Bruce Lyon, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology,
was quoted in an article in New Scientist magazine about the counting
abilities of animals. . . . Jakarta's Kompas, the top Indonesian
newspaper, featured an in-depth interview with theater arts professor
Kathy Foley, and the Bandung, Indonesia, papers Pikiran Rakyat
and Metro had articles on her lecture-performance at the Sunaryo
gallery in Bandung, which shared aspects of her Fulbright-supported research.
. . . Dan Costa, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology,
was quoted in an article in The Scotsman and in National Geographic
News about his collaborative research project called Tagging of Pacific
Pelagics, which aims to tag and track the movements of more than 20 different
species of marine life.
National
Economist Lori Kletzers proposal to extend unemployment
insurance received a nice endorsement in a lengthy Atlantic Monthly
article. She was also quoted in Salon.com on the topic of extending
trade-related job-loss benefits to white-collar workers. . . . Astronomer
Garth Illingworth was quoted in a New York Times story about
a pair of reports from an anonymous NASA engineer disputing the agency's
official justification for canceling maintenance missions to the Hubble
Space Telescope. Illingworth is a member of one of the Hubble camera teams
and is on a committee that advises NASA on space science. . . . The New
York Times featured several quotes by assistant professor of film
and digital media L. S. Kim, plus her photo, in a story about the
cultural impact of HBOs television series Sex and the City.
. . . The Washington Post tapped Brent Haddad of environmental
studies for a story about the growth of water markets in the West and
how they are moving more and more water from farms to thirsty cities.
Haddad was also quoted in a Greenwire story about UCs new Institute
for Research in Climate Change and its Societal Impacts, which will pair
scientists who focus on health care, water resources, and other areas
with climatologists to learn what the real-world impacts of climate change
might be. . . . The Daily Iowan noted a keynote lecture by American
studies professor George Lipsitz about the 50th anniversary of
the landmark Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education of
Topeka. In addition, Lipsitz and history of consciousness professor
Angela Davis were mentioned in an article in the Santa Cruz Sentinel
about a UCSC event to discuss the death penalty. . . . An article in the
New York Times about dark energy and its implications for the fate
of the universe included a quote from Sandra Faber, University
Professor of astronomy and astrophysics. . . . The New York Times
quoted Film and Digital Media Department chair and professor Chip Lord
in an article about the Ant Farm--the innovative art and architecture
collective he cofounded that is now being celebrated with a retrospective
at the Berkeley Art Museum. . . . Anthropologist Diane Gifford-Gonzalez
was quoted in a New York Times article about the significance of
the discovery in Niger of a Stone Age burial and settlement site tentatively
dated at 5,000 years old. . . . Margaret Delaney, professor of
ocean sciences, was quoted in a story in the Oregonian about the
importance of ocean research. . . . Economist Rob Fairlie was recently
interviewed by a reporter from the Dow Jones news service, who was interested
in learning about entrepreneurship among disadvantaged groups. . . . Roland
Tharp of the Center for Research on Education, Diversity, and Excellence
was quoted in the Star Tribune of Minneapolis about the seamless
introduction of Hmong culture into the school curriculum. . . . Professor
of history Bruce Levine contributed a book review to the Chicago
Tribune about a historical scholars new perspective on Abraham
Lincoln. . . . History professor Dana Frank was quoted in AAA
World magazine about the politics of "Buy American" campaigns.
State and regional
American studies professor and department chair Tricia Rose was
quoted in the Contra Costa Times about the influence of pop culture
on clothing choices. . . . Economist Mike Dooley was featured in
a San Francisco Chronicle column about the decline of the U.S.
dollar and why it matters. . . . Roland Tharp of the Center for
Research on Education, Diversity, and Excellence was quoted in the San
Jose Mercury News and Contra Costa Times about challenges educators
face in school districts that are becoming racially and ethnically diverse.
. . . Glaciologist Slawek Tulaczyk, an assistant professor of Earth
sciences, was quoted in a story in the Mt. Shasta News about the
glaciers on Mt. Shasta, which are growing while Sierra Nevada glaciers
shrink. . . . The Orange County Register featured the views of
sociology instructor Mike Males in a recent article about teens
and the gap between the reality and how they are portrayed in mainstream
media. . . . In psychology, Jean Fox Tree was featured in a KCBS
Radio broadcast about her work on speech and comprehension. . . . Manuel
Pastor and Tony LoPresti of the Center for Justice, Tolerance,
and Community coauthored an opinion piece for the San Jose Mercury
News about the World Social Forum, a gathering of 100,000 international
activists to discuss social, political, and economic issues. . . . The
Los Angeles Times quoted Brent Haddad of environmental studies
in a story about Californias ongoing struggle to supply water to
its growing population. . . . Film and Digital Media Department chair
and professor Chip Lord appeared on a KRON-TV Sunday morning news
show in San Francisco to discuss a retrospective of the Ant Farm architecture
collective at the Berkeley Art Museum. . . . A San Francisco Chronicle
article about a new arts education program in Bay Area elementary schools
described a classroom discussion of a photograph taken by assistant professor
of art Lewis Watts.
Local
The Salinas Californian reviewed a new book by literature professor
Julianne Burton-Carvajal about Central Coast artist Jo Mora. .
. . The Santa Cruz Sentinel picked up on work by Julie Guthman
of community studies on the challenges facing organic farming in California.
. . . Paul Ortiz of community studies was interviewed by KAZU Radio
about Kevin Cooper, the death row inmate whose execution was postponed
to allow for further review. . . . Linda Locatelli, manager of
the campus plant growth facilities, was featured in an article about orchids
in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. . . . Art Pearl,
professor emeritus of education, was quoted in the Monterey County
Herald about the value of prison education programs. . . . The Santa
Cruz Sentinel ran a story about the new Department of Biomolecular
Engineering, quoting acting chair David Deamer, professor of chemistry
and biochemistry. The San Jose Business Journal also reported on
the new department. . . . Biologists Janet Linthicum and Glenn
Stewart of the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group were featured
in a story about peregrine falcons in the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
. . . The Monterey County Herald noted that acclaimed photographer
Al Weber is a volunteer adviser to the UCSC librarys Special
Collections in an article about a new exhibit of Webers photographs
at the Monterey Museum of Art.
