Robert Coe, professor of Earth sciences, was featured in stories about the weakening of the Earth's magnetic field that appeared in New Scientist magazine, along with Science Net Daily online, and the San Jose Mercury News, Detroit Free Press, and Duluth News Tribune. . . . New African magazine (UK) published a story about history of consciousness professor Angela Davis accepting the Honorary Citizen of Paris award on behalf of imprisoned former Black Panther, civil rights activist, and journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal. . . . A story about electronic voting machines in New Scientist magazine included a quote from Robert Kibrick, a computer scientist and research astronomer at UCO/Lick Observatory.

National

Psychologist Jean Fox Tree’s research on speech comprehension was featured in a story that appeared in the New York Times and the Chattanooga Times Free Press, among other publications. Fox Tree, and Herbert Clark at Stanford, are pioneers of cutting-edge investigations of the significance of speech "disfluencies," such as um and uh. . . . Astronomers Sandra Faber and Garth Illingworth were widely quoted in news stories about NASA's decision to no longer service the Hubble Space Telescope, saying the decision is a mistake. The stories appeared in the New York Times, Houston Chronicle, Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, San Francisco Chronicle, Sunday Times (London), and Santa Cruz Sentinel. . . . Marine ecologist Jim Estes and marine mammal physiologist Terrie Williams were featured in an article in the Anchorage Daily News about their investigations of predation by killer whales on other marine mammals in Alaska. . . . The New York Times cited assistant dean of the arts Keith Muscutt in an article about Peru’s past, noting his authorship of a book about the Chachapoya people, titled Warriors of the Clouds, and his excavation of mummies dating to 1100 from cliffside mausoleums on a remote Peruvian lake, documented by the History Channel. . . .The Associated Press tapped water expert Brent Haddad of environmental studies for a story about the emergence of water markets across western states. . . . History professor Dana Frank appeared on CNN’s Lou Dobbs Tonight program in a segment titled "Whatever Happened to Made in America?" and Tennessee’s Daily Times quoted Frank in an article about buying American products. . . . Quotes by linguistics professor Geoffrey Pullum were featured prominently in an article on the back page of the New York Times Week in Review section about the possibility that writers might run out of words to describe how cold it has been in New York City. . . . Associate professor of art history Carolyn Dean was quoted in a Seattle Times article about the transition of Our Lady of Guadalupe from a sacred image in Mexico to a U.S. pop-culture icon. . . . Astronomer David Koo was quoted in an article in USA Today about research on the formation of giant galaxies. . . . Economist Rob Fairlie was interviewed by a reporter from CBS Marketwatch.com for a story about trends in entrepreneurship among older workers. . . . Daily Variety announced that associate professor of film and digital media Shelley Stamp was selected as a 2003 Academy Film Scholar by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. . . . The work of Wentai Liu, professor of electrical engineering, and others to develop a retinal prosthesis for restoring vision was the subject of stories in several trade publications, including Mechanical Engineering, Medical Devices & Surgical Technology Week, Biotech Week, and Health & Medicine Week. . . . Susanne Jonas of Latin American and Latino studies was interviewed by CNN International’s World News program about the Dec. 28 Guatemalan runoff election. . . . American studies professor Tricia Rose was quoted in a Boston Globe article about the impact of pop culture on female fashion choices. . . . Frank Drake, professor emeritus of astronomy, was quoted in a New York Times essay about how people might react if scientists discovered evidence of life on Mars. . . . An Associated Press story on the $35 million gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to the University of California and Caltech to build the most powerful telescope included mention of Lick Observatory director Joe Miller. KSBW-Channel 8 also covered the story. . . . The Chronicle of Higher Education cited several passages from history professor Mark Cioc’s book The Rhine: An Eco-Biography, 1815-2000 in an article titled "The Power of Water." . . . Astronomer Greg Laughlin was quoted in a story in National Geographic News about the likelihood of Earthlike planets elsewhere in the universe. . . . The Albuquerque Journal quoted folksinger Rosalie Sorrels about the donation of her archives to UCSC’s Special Collections. . . . Associate professor of history and Oakes College provost Pedro Castillo was quoted in a Chronicle of Higher Education article about the return of "flagging"—the process of marking certain nontraditional grant applications for extra review—to the National Endowment for the Humanities. . . . Indiana’s Palladium-Item ran an article about a speech given by history of consciousness professor Angela Davis at Earlham College in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, where she noted that living in a colorblind society that does not discuss race is not the same as living in an equitable society that treats all its members the same way.

Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood participated in a roundtable discussion convened by the San Jose Mercury News on the impact of California's budget woes on higher education; an edited transcript of the conversation ran in two parts in the Mercury News in December. . . . Professor of Earth sciences Gary Griggs was quoted in a story in the San Francisco Chronicle about erosion of the bluff at Pleasure Point and a proposed seawall recently rejected by the Coastal Commission. . . . An article in the Los Angeles Times about the investigation of the crash of the space shuttle Columbia included a brief section on the contributions of Julian Christou, a research specialist in the Center for Adaptive Optics, who applied advanced image-enhancement techniques to a photo of the shuttle just before it broke up. . . . Film and digital media professor and department chair Chip Lord contributed a piece to the Bay Guardian about last year’s visit by film star Nicolas Cage to a UCSC film class. . . . History professor Dana Frank spoke about job outsourcing on San Francisco’s KRON-Channel 4. . . . Theater arts professor and department chair Danny Scheie was quoted in BackStage on the subject of comic timing. . . . The UCSC Satyajit Ray Film and Study Collection was cited in a San Francisco Chronicle article about the restoration of Ray’s films and the recent release of a documentary about the acclaimed Indian filmmaker.
