This summary highlights prominent media placements UCSC faculty and staff have garnered during the months of October and November 2002.

International

The work of Alva Noë, associate professor of philosophy, was cited in New Scientist magazine. Noë, along with psychologist Kevin O'Regan of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, argues for a "sensorimotor theory of vision," which the New Scientist article called "dramatically different from exiting theories of perception." . . . Sociologist Dane Archer was quoted in the Financial Times about the murder rate in the United States. . . . History of Consciousness professor Barbara Epstein was quoted in New Statesman about the global justice movement. . . . Rob Fairlie of economics was quoted in Inc. magazine and contributed to a BBC/PBS four-part television series on black America, discussing black business ownership. . . . Research on long-term memory in sea lions by marine biologist Ronald Schusterman and postdoctoral researcher Colleen Reichmuth Kastak received widespread coverage. After stories appeared in New Scientist magazine and on the Reuters wire service, the researchers were contacted for interviews by BBC Radio, CNN, National Geographic TV, and Discovery Channel Canada.

National

David Wellman of community studies was tapped by the New York Times for comment about President Bush's intervention in the labor conflict at West Coast ports. . . . USA Today quoted psychology's Craig Haney on the risk of describing the killer that was terrorizing the Washington, D.C., area as "cowardly," saying it was a "bit of a gamble" to hope that angering the assailant would prompt an ill-considered move that would aid law enforcement efforts. . . . Political scientist Dan Wirls provided analysis for Salon.com of a recent speech by President Bush, in which Bush relaunched a "kindler, gentler" rationale for his administration's policy on Iraq. . . . Stories about a project led by assistant professor of astronomy Greg Laughlin and NASA astronomer Tim Castellano, in which amateur astronomers are being encouraged to conduct observations to help detect planets around other stars, ran in the Santa Cruz Sentinel and Christian Science Monitor. . . . "Art of the Lega: Meaning and Metaphor in Central Africa," an exhibit curated by assistant professor of art history Elisabeth Cameron, was reviewed in the Kansas City Star. . . . Pagan Time: An American Childhood, by Micah Perks, assistant professor of literature, was reviewed in the Santa Fe New Mexican. Perks's memoir was described as "vibrantly written, amusing, at times astonishing" by the reviewer. . . . Astrobiologist David Deamer, a research professor of chemistry and biochemistry, was quoted in an article about extraterrestrial life in the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Inquirer story also ran in the San Jose Mercury News. . . . Steven Vogt, professor of astronomy, was interviewed by the syndicated radio program Earth and Sky for a story about the search for new planets. . . . Francisco Hernandez was quoted in a Washington Internet Daily story about the availability of online test preparation. . . . Angela Davis, professor of history of consciousness, was featured in a Kansas City Star article about a talk she gave at the University of Missouri regarding the prison system.

State and regional

Psychology's Craig Haney appeared twice in the Los Angeles Times recently, first in a story about an inmate hunger strike at Pelican Bay State Prison and then in a Los Angeles Times Magazine story about prison rape. . . . A feature in Discover magazine on the 50 most important women in science included University Professor of astronomy Sandra Faber, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology Terrie Williams, and professor of Earth sciences Marcia McNutt. Stories noting the UCSC faculty who were featured in the magazine appeared in the San Jose Mercury News, Contra Costa Times, and Santa Cruz Sentinel. . . . An article in the Contra Costa Times about the impact of global warming on California water supplies featured comments from Brent Haddad, associate professor of environmental studies, and Lisa Sloan, associate professor of Earth sciences. . . . Research by the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group on ways to prevent golden eagles and other raptors from being electrocuted by power lines was covered in the San Jose Mercury News and Santa Cruz Sentinel and on KCBS Radio. Researchers Brian Walton and Brian Latta were featured in the coverage. . . . Marine ecologist Mark Carr was quoted in an article in the San Francisco Chronicle about newly established marine reserves around the Channel Islands. Carr serves on a scientific advisory panel on the reserves. . . . Cal State Northridge's radio station picked up on a new report about the future of virtual education for high schools that has been endorsed by Francisco Hernandez, vice chancellor of Student Affairs. Hernandez also received coverage in the Boston Globe and Oakland Tribune for his role launching a new UC-sponsored free online test-preparation course. . . . Tim Tinker, a graduate student in biology, was quoted in the San Luis Obispo Tribune in a story about Tinker's research on sea otters. . . . The San Jose Mercury News tapped Manuel Pastor of Latin American and Latino studies for its four-day series on the "shadow economy" of Silicon Valley, in which the working poor run side businesses to make ends meet. . . . Theater arts instructor Patty Gallagher contributed comments analyzing circus as an art form to a San Jose Mercury article about Cirque du Soleil.

Local

Forrest Robinson, professor of American studies, was interviewed on KSCO Radio during the national "Banned Books Week." Robinson has written, taught, and lectured on Huckleberry Finn, one of the most frequently banned books in American history. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel did a retrospective on the contributions of graduates of the Center for Agroecology's apprenticeship program, highlighting the accomplishments of several alumni. Pacific Grove-based KAZU Radio produced a feature about the apprenticeship in organic horticulture, too, and the station interviewed Paul Ortiz of community studies about his book of oral histories told by African Americans who had lived in the segregated South. . . . KSCO Radio covered the New Teacher Center's $7.5 million NSF-funded project to establish an "e-mentoring" system for beginning science teachers. The San Jose Mercury News made note of the center's recent reception in San Jose that honored new teachers, and a crew from KRON-TV interviewed NTC director Ellen Moir. . . . Frank Galuszka, professor of art, authored an opinion piece that ran in the Santa Cruz Sentinel about the "uglification" of Santa Cruz. . . . Social psychologist Tom Pettigrew was featured on a KSBW-TV segment about hate and conflict. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about the online course taught by Tara Madhyastha, assistant professor of computer engineering. . . . An article in the Monterey Herald about the dredging of the Moss Landing Harbor included comments from Gary Griggs, professor of Earth sciences and director of the Institute of Marine Sciences. . . . The Monterey County Herald covered a public forum on Iraq in which Alan Richards of environmental studies participated. . . . Professor of physics Bruce Schumm was interviewed on KSCO Radio about a new particle collider being planned for the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). . . . Sue Carter, associate professor of physics, and Jin Zhang, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, were featured in an article about solar energy research in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Carter was also quoted in a related story in the Sentinel business section.
