Media Highlights
June 2003
This summary highlights prominent media placements UCSC faculty and staff
have garnered during the month of June 2003.
International
Nancy Chen of anthropology was cited in an article in The Edge
Malaysia about how Asia is embracing the DNA revolution. Chen is tracking
China's development of transgenic plants.
National
A study by geophysicists Steven Ward and Erik Asphaug describing
the destructive tsunami that could result from an asteroid impact in the
Atlantic Ocean received widespread coverage. Ward was interviewed by television
news crews for KION, KCBA, and KPIX, and for radio broadcasts on KSCO
and the Virginia News Network. An Associated Press wire story appeared
in the San Jose Mercury News and other newspapers around the country.
Stories about the study also appeared on several online news sites, including
Scientific American online, Science Daily, Discovery News, ABC Science
Online, Times of India, Astrobiology Magazine, Astronomy.com, Sci Fi Today,
Astronomy News, Space.com, and Slashdot. Ward was also
interviewed on KMOX Radio in St. Louis. . . . Research by Mara Mather
of psychology made a media splash, appearing in USA Today and the
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, among other newspapers, and was featured
in the June issue of the American Psychological Associations newsletter,
Monitor on Psychology. Mather, with colleagues at UC Irvine and
Stanford, found that older people appear to be wired in ways that accentuate
positive memories that foster good feelings. . . . Research by Glenn
Millhauser, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, on the prion
protein (which causes "mad cow disease") was featured in Chemical
& Engineering News, the magazine of the American Chemical Society.
. . . The Chronicle of Higher Education wrote about the "feminization"
of anthropology, tapping anthropologist Donald Brenneis for comment.
. . . Economist Rob Fairlie was interviewed by a reporter from
the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette about school segregation in the South.
. . . Anthony Pratkanis of psychology was interviewed for a Psychology
Today article about how people adopt brand-name loyalties. . . . The
UCSC New Teacher Center was hailed as a "particularly effective
model for inducting new teachers" in a Business Perspectives
article. . . . Astronomer Steven Vogt was quoted in a USA Today
article about the search for habitable planets outside the solar system.
. . . The Baton Rouge Sunday Advocate noted that photographs by
assistant professor of art Lewis Watts would be featured at a major
exhibition of African American art in Baton Rouge. . . . Erika Zavaleta,
a new assistant professor of environmental studies, saw her research on
the water-guzzling habits of the nonnative tamarisk plant featured in
Associated Press coverage of the governments efforts to eradicate
the thirsty plant. . . . National Public Radios Weekend Edition
broadcast an interview with American folk music icon Rosalie Sorrells,
describing the donation of her archives to UCSC at a celebratory concert
that took place in February at McHenry Librarys Special Collections.
State and regional
The San Diego Union Tribune tapped Craig Haney of psychology
for comment about the hardships faced by those exonerated by DNA evidence
and freed from prison after being wrongly convicted. . . . The San
Jose Business Journal published an article about the new book, Beyond
Superwoman, coauthored by womens studies lecturer Peggy Downes
Baskin. The Santa Cruz Sentinel also ran a feature article
about the book in its Sunday edition. . . . The San Francisco Chronicle
cited a visit by actor Nicholas Cage (and his cousin Roman Coppola) to
a UCSC film class on the Features Page of its "Datebook" arts
and entertainment section. The visit was arranged by Film and Digital
Media Department chair Chip Lord. Cage's visit was also covered
by the Good Times . . . . The San Jose Mercury News and
Santa Cruz Sentinel published articles about the retirement of
UCSC Librarian Allan Dyson after 24 years of service. . . . Tosha
Comendant, a postdoctoral researcher working with biologists Don
Croll and Bernie Tershie, was quoted in the Orange County
Register in an article about efforts to rid Anacapa Island of nonnative
rats. . . . Anthropologist Triloki Pandey was quoted in a San
Jose Mercury News article about the recent visit of Sri Mata Amritanandamayi
Devi, considered a living saint by devotees and compared by many spiritual
seekers to Mother Teresa and Mohandas Gandhi.
Local
Alan Richards of environmental studies was quoted in a Salinas
Californian article about the U.S. public-relations challenges in
Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein. . . . A recent two-day conference
sponsored by the UC Santa Cruz Center for International Economics
was covered by the Santa Cruz Sentinel. The gathering brought together
leading economic analysts to discuss financial instability in Latin America.
. . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran an article about the election
of linguistics professor Geoffrey Pullum as a Fellow of the American
Academy of Arts and Sciences. . . . Ira Pohl, professor and chair
of computer science, was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel story
about a federal grant to support graduate students in the department.
. . . The Watsonville Register-Pajaronian profiled work by John
Borrego of community studies who each year encourages his students
to learn about globalization by examining its impacts on the Watsonville
community. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about research
by Ali Shakouri, associate professor of electrical engineering,
on direct thermal to electric energy conversion technology. . . . Albie
Miles of the Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems
discussed community-supported agriculture on KAZU Radio. . . . The Santa
Cruz Sentinel tapped Orin Martin, manager of the Alan Chadwick
Garden, for tips on growing citrus on the Central Coast. . . . The Monterey
County Herald ran a story about the Center for Stock Assessment Research
run by UCSC's Marc Mangel, professor of applied math and statistics,
and Alec MacCall at the Santa Cruz National Marine Fisheries Service laboratory.
. . . Classics professor Karen Bassi was quoted in the Santa
Cruz Sentinel about a gift from UCSC alumnus Mark Engel to
enrich the library collection in classical studies through the establishment
of the Norman O. Brown Classics Endowment. . . . Film and Digital Media
Department chair Chip Lord and assistant professor Gustavo
Vasquez were quoted in a Good Times feature article about UCSC
film students. . . . Biology graduate student Michael Weise was
quoted in a Monterey Herald story about sea lions swarming over
Monterey's waterfront. Weise said he expected the sea lions to disperse
soon. . . . Norman Locks, chair of the Art Department, was quoted
in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article about an exhibition by UCSCs
Irwin Scholars at the Sesnon Art Gallery. . . . .Film and digital media
lecturer Irene Gustafson was cited in the Santa Cruz Sentinel
about a donation by the Eastman Kodak Company of film stock to help support
UCSCs digital arts program.
