This summary highlights prominent media placements UCSC faculty and staff have garnered during the month of May 2003.

International

The German newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau devoted several paragraphs to assistant professor of philosophy Alva Noë in an article about sensory substitution and the recent film The Daredevil. The article quoted Noë on the interpretation and significance of devices meant to enable the blind to see using other sensory capacities, such as hearing and touch. Noë was also the featured guest on a half-hour radio program for Australia’s Radio National, discussing his recent article, "Is the Visual World a Grand Illusion?" . . . Dan Wirls of politics was quoted in an op-ed about alliances between the Bush administration and religious groups that appeared in the weekly online edition of Australia’s Green Left.

National

Craig Haney of psychology was quoted extensively in a recent article in The Nation about the psychological consequences of confinement in supermaximum security prisons. Haney also appeared on a PBS Frontline documentary called "Burden of Innocence," discussing the psychological obstacles faced by people who have been exonerated for crimes they did not commit and then return to the free world. Haney was also interviewed numerous times by a writer preparing a story for the New York Times Magazine about death penalty cases and the importance of studying the backgrounds and social histories of defendants. . . . David Haussler, director of the Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering (CBSE), was interviewed on National Public Radio's All Things Considered in a story about the human genome. Haussler discussed the analogy of DNA code as computer software with NPR reporter David Kestenbaum. Haussler and CBSE researcher Fan Hsu were quoted in a story about the UCSC genome browser in Genomics and Genetics Weekly. . . . Psychology’s Campbell Leaper was featured in an ABC News report about differences in how boys and girls communicate. . . . Research on the composition of distant galaxies by astronomer Jason Prochaska was covered by Science News, Science Now, Space Flight Now, and Physics Web. . . . Sociologist Dane Archer was interviewed by the New York Times for an article about ethnic cosmetic surgery. . . . Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood was quoted extensively in an article in the Washington Fax, an online science policy information service, about the need to invest in graduate science and technology education on a national level. . . . Professor of chemistry and biochemistry David Deamer was quoted in a story about new research on the origins of life in Science News magazine. Deamer was also featured in a story about evolution and astrobiology in Astrobiology magazine. . . . Assistant professor of ocean sciences Raphael Kudela was quoted in a story on the ScienceNOW web site about the "black water" phenomenon that damaged coral reefs off the coast of Florida. . . . Guillermo Delgado-P. of Latin American and Latino studies was tapped by the Albuquerque Journal for a story about a film festival that showcased films about ethnic identity, labor rights activism, gender and sexuality issues, indigenous resistance movements, and other topics. During the festival, Delgado-P. discussed three Bolivian documentaries about the fallout from U.S.-sponsored coca eradication programs. . . . Daniel Costa, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, was featured in a Boston Globe article about the Tagging of Pacific Pelagics (TOPP) program, an ambitious project to equip oceangoing animals with electronic tags to gather detailed oceanographic data and document the animals' migratory habits. Costa oversees the seabird and marine mammal components of TOPP, which includes research on 20 species of whales, seals, birds, sharks, tunas, sea turtles, and large squid. . . . Garth Illingworth, professor of astronomy and astrophysics, was quoted in a Washington Times story about how the temporary grounding of the space shuttle fleet is affecting previously scheduled maintenance of the Hubble Space Telescope. . . . Postdoctoral researcher Mark Kessler's research on the forces that create patterned ground was the subject of a long article in Science News magazine. . . . An ABC News online story about a proposal for a scientific probe to explore Earth's interior included quotes from Gary Glatzmaier, professor of Earth sciences. . . . Ecologist Bruce Lyon's research on the nesting behavior of coots was featured in a news story in National Wildlife magazine.

State and regional

The May issue of the California Journal, the Sacramento-based "must read" publication for politicos, included articles with commentary from two UCSC affiliates. Manuel Pastor of Latin American and Latino studies was quoted in an article about environmental justice and the disproportionate exposure of racial minorities to toxics, while Gary Bloom, associate director of the UCSC New Teacher Center, was featured in a story about computers in the classroom. . . . Adjunct professor of ecology and evolutionary biology James Estes was quoted in a Sacramento Bee story about the alarming increase in sea otter deaths off the California coast. . . . A new videotape by sociologist Dane Archer was the subject of a San Jose Mercury News article about the gender gap in communication. . . . Professor of ecology and evolutionary biology Pete Raimondi was quoted in an article in the San Jose Mercury News about efforts to preserve tide pools and protect the creatures that live in them from growing hordes of visitors.

Local

UCSC's number one ranking in space sciences in a recent survey of top universities received print and broadcast news coverage. Stan Woosley, professor and chair of astronomy and astrophysics, was quoted in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, and Burt Jones, professor of astronomy and astrophysics and assistant director of Lick Observatory, was interviewed by KION TV. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about the retirement celebration for Ron Schusterman, adjunct professor of ocean sciences and longtime sea lion researcher at Long Marine Lab. The article included quotes from postdoctoral researcher Colleen Reichmuth Kastak. . . . Donald Saposnek, a lecturer in psychology, discussed war-related stress and fear of terrorism on KUSP Radio. . . . Carolyn Martin Shaw of anthropology appeared on KUSP Radio as part of a discussion of university policies regarding faculty-student relationships. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel published a front-page feature story, as well as a follow-up article, extensively quoting history professor Peter Kenez, English and comparative literature professor Murray Baumgarten, and history lecturer Bruce Thompson about a three-day conference, "Rethinking Anti-Semitism: The Holocaust and the Contemporary World," held at Stevenson College. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about the Research Review Day at the Baskin School of Engineering, with quotes from Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood and engineering dean Steve Kang. The story also mentioned research by engineering faculty members Ali Shakouri, Michael Isaacson, Wentai Liu, and David Haussler, and included favorable quotes about the school from several Silicon Valley industry representatives. . . . An article about the science illustration program in the Santa Cruz Sentinel included quotes from program coordinator Ann Caudle and several current graduate students: Evan Barbour, Nicolle Rager, and Lucy Reading. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported on a Fulbright-Hays research grant awarded to Elisabeth Cameron, assistant professor of art history, that will enable her to study African culture in Zambia. . . . UCSC tennis coach Bob Hansen and the program he has built were profiled in the sports section of the Santa Cruz Sentinel prior to the NCAA Division III national championships at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota. . . . Nancy Stoller of community studies was quoted in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article about the large number of women in prison.
