Media Highlights
April 2003
This summary highlights prominent media placements UCSC faculty and staff
have garnered during the month of April 2003.
International
An article about fisheries management in New Scientist magazine
featured quotes from Marc Mangel, professor of applied math and
statistics and head of the Center for Stock Assessment Research, and Teresa
Ish, a graduate student in ocean sciences. . . . Faye Crosby
of psychology gave interviews to Londons Guardian newspaper,
as well as KUSP Radio and Metro Santa Cruz, about the U.S. Supreme
Court case challenging the use of affirmative action in admissions by
the University of Michigan. . . . During a recent visit to France, where
he was invited to speak at the Sorbonne University and to a group of multicultural
community leaders in Marseilles, sociology professor John Brown Childs
was quoted in the newspaper Le Provençal on the subject
of transcommunal cooperation among diverse populations. . . . Associate
professor of Earth sciences Erik Asphaug published an article in
New Scientist magazine about efforts to monitor asteroids that
might be on a collision course with Earth, and how the asteroid threat
compares with other natural hazards.
National
Amelie Hastie, assistant professor of film and digital media,
was consulted for a piece in the New York Times where she discussed
media representation of the war in Iraq. The story was also picked up
in Le Monde. . . . Jerry Nelson, director of the Center
for Adaptive Optics, and Joseph Miller, director of UC Observatories/Lick
Observatory, were quoted in a story about adaptive optics that ran in
several Knight Ridder newspapers, including the Charleston Gazette,
Charlotte Observer, and Duluth News-Tribune. . . . K. C.
Fung appeared on PBS's Newshour with Jim Lehrer discussing
the economic impact of SARS in cities like Hong Kong. . . . Research by
Bruce Lyon, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology,
showing that coots can recognize and count their own eggs, even when other
birds have laid eggs in the same nest, received widespread media coverage,
including articles in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, San Jose Mercury News,
San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Globe, New York Times, UPI and Reuters
wire services, and the magazines Science News and The Scientist.
Online coverage included National Geographic News, MSNBC, ABC News,
and web sites of the British newspapers the Daily Mirror and the
Independent. . . . Copley News Service tapped the propaganda expertise
of psychologys Anthony Pratkanis, who also spoke with the
Daily Oklahoman about the 1996 publication of the "Shock and
Awe: Rapid Dominance" doctrine. Pratkanis was also interviewed by
Utahs Ogden Standard Examiner about brainwashing and cultic
influence processes as part of the paper's coverage of the Elizabeth Smart
kidnapping case. . . . Astrophysicist Stan Woosley was quoted in
an article about gamma ray bursts and other violent cosmic phenomena that
ran in numerous Knight Ridder newspapers, including the Houston Chronicle,
Charleston Gazette, Charlotte Observer, Duluth News-Tribune, Billings
Gazette, and Lexington Herald-Leader. . . . Sociologys
Bill Domhoff wrote a thought-provoking piece for the magazine
In These Times on redefining "whos us and them"
in the quest for egalitarian social change. . . . Ann Caudle, coordinator
of the Science Illustration Program, was quoted in a Sierra magazine
article about scientific illustration. . . . A Cincinnati Enquirer
story about fetal surgery mentioned sociologist Monica Caspers
book, The Making of the Unborn Patient. . . . Professor of astronomy
and astrophysics Garth Illingworth was quoted in news stories about
the planned launch of a powerful new space telescope called SIRTF, the
fourth of NASA's "Great Observatories." The stories appeared
in several newspapers, including the Washington Post, Chicago Sun-Times,
Florida Today, and Salt Lake Tribune. . . . The Oregonian
quoted history of consciousness professor Barbara Epstein in a
piece about the antiwar movement. . . . James Estes,
adjunct professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, was featured in
an article in the Washington Post about predation by killer whales
on other marine mammals, including seals, sea lions, and sea otters.
. . . The Work of Dance: Labor, Movement and Identity in the 1930s,
a recent book by theater arts professor Mark Franko, was hailed
as "remarkable" and "riveting" in the April issue
of Choice.
State and regional
UCSC faculty were in demand during the Iraq war: Alan Richards
of environmental studies was interviewed by La Opinion newspaper
and KUSP Radio, and the Salinas Californian checked in with Richards,
historian Terry Burke, and political scientist Ronnie Lipschutz
for an update on the war. . . . Amelie Hastie, assistant professor
of film and digital media, made an appearance with host Andrea Lewis on
KPFA Radio to discuss television coverage of the war against Iraq. . .
. The San Jose Mercury News covered the recent Mexico City meeting
between government officials and Mexican expatriates who live in the United
States, tapping Jonathan Fox of Latin American and Latino studies
for comment on the significance of the meeting. . . . When leaders of
the Human Genome Project announced its successful completion this month,
several news articles mentioned the role of UCSC bioinformatics researchers
in the project, including David Haussler, director of the Center
for Biomolecular Science and Engineering, and CBSE research scientist
James Kent. The stories appeared in the Santa Cruz Sentinel,
San Francisco Chronicle, and The Scientist magazine. . . .
The Salinas Californian featured Lisa Sloan, associate professor
of Earth sciences, in a story about how global warming is likely to affect
the Central Coast. . . . The Monterey Herald ran a story about
art exhibits at the UC Monterey Bay Education, Science and Technology
(MBEST) Center. MBEST assistant director Shelley Kadota was quoted
in the story.
Local
The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story about how producers of the
movie The Core consulted with professor of Earth sciences Gary
Glatzmaier, but ended up ignoring his advice. Glatzmaier was also
quoted in stories about the movie's scientific weaknesses in Popular
Science and MSNBC News. . . . Glenn Stewart, program
manager for the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, was interviewed
by local media, including the Santa Cruz Sentinel, KSCO Radio,
and KION TV, about the release of three peregrine falcon fledglings at
Long Marine Laboratory. The Sentinel story also quoted Seymour
Center director Julie Barrett Heffington. . . . A Santa Cruz
Sentinel story about "blogs," or online journalism, featured
comments from UCSC journalism instructor Kevin Woodward and politics
professor Bruce Larkin. . . . Literature lecturer and poet Charles
Atkinson was featured in a Santa Cruz Sentinel article about
how the war in Iraq seeps into American art. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel
ran an item about Todd Lowe, assistant professor of computer engineering,
who was awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel
featured associate professor of music Hi Kyung Kim in an article
about her role as artistic director of the UCSC Music Departments
Pacific Rim Music Festival. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a
front-page feature story, quoting library development director Margaret
Gordon, about renowned cookbook author and alumnus Bruce Aidellss
donation to establish a cookery endowment at UCSC. . . . An article in
the Santa Cruz Sentinel about marine reserves included quotes from
Mark Carr, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology.
