A reporter from Asahi Shimbun, Japan’s leading daily with a circulation of 8.2 million, flew to California to spend a day interviewing Dane Archer of sociology about crime in the United States. . . . Research on links between ocean currents and rockfish populations by oceanographer Margaret McManus and her colleagues in the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) was covered in New Scientist magazine.

National

The New York Times ran an op-ed piece by American studies professor Tricia Rose about the effect of race, sex, and stigmas in the fight against AIDS. . . . Michael Riordan, adjunct professor of physics, was quoted in a New York Times article about a German physicist who independently invented the transistor shortly after the Bell Laboratories researchers who won fame and Nobel Prizes for the invention. . . . Psychology’s Craig Haney was featured in an article in The Nation about supermax prisons. . . . The New York Times devoted several paragraphs in an article on the front page of the Health & Fitness section to discussing the book Lack of Character: Personality and Moral Behavior by associate professor of philosophy John Doris. . . . Francisco Hernandez, vice chancellor for Student Affairs, was quoted in an article in BusinessWire.com about the AP test preparation service now being offered on the web free to California high school students by the University of California. The service is an extension of the UC College Prep Initiative, which Hernandez developed in collaboration with other UC campuses. . . . The Illinois State Journal-Register cited a lecture by professor of history Bruce Levine in commemoration of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday at the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. . . . Psychology professor Anthony Pratkanis, whose expertise on wartime propaganda and psychological warfare has been in demand, fielded calls from the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong's biggest English-language newspaper, as well as from the Los Angeles Times. . . .
