Media Highlights
February 2003
This summary highlights prominent media placements UCSC faculty and staff
have garnered during the month of February 2003.
International
Mark Kessler, a postdoctoral researcher in Earth sciences, received
widespread media coverage for his work explaining the origins of stone
circles and other mysterious patterns that form on the ground in northern
regions. The coverage included articles in the Daily Telegraph
(London), New York Times, Chicago Sun-Times, Seattle Post Intelligencer,
Arizona Republic, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Newsday, Los Angeles Times,
Los Angeles Daily News, San Diego Union-Tribune, and Dallas Morning
News . Kessler also did several radio interviews. Online coverage
included BBC News and Discovery News. The Discovery Channel
Canada, Scientific American, Time, and New Scientist magazine
also covered the story. . . . The Financial Times of London consulted
with economist Menzie Chinn for an article about international
investors and spreading risk through diversification. . . . Australias
Gold Coast Bulletin and U.S. New & World Report quoted
history lecturer Bruce Thompson in articles about Soviet espionage.
. . . Research on links between ocean currents and rockfish populations
by oceanographer Margaret McManus and her colleagues in the Partnership
for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) was featured in
the San Francisco Chronicle, the Oregonian, and in the
New Scientist and Nature magazines. . . . Valentines
Day came just in time for a story about research on romantic love that
appeared in the Toronto Star and Newsday. The article mentioned
psychologys Steve Wright, who is embarking on a study of
the effects of love and friendship between people who belong to different
social groups.
National
The Philadelphia Inquirer turned to physicist Joel Primack
for expert commentary in a story about space debris, NASA's decision to
slash the budget of its unit that studies space debris, and the possibility
that a collision with space junk played a role in the destruction of the
space shuttle Columbia. The Inquirer story also ran in other
Knight-Ridder newspapers, including the Miami Herald. Primack was
also quoted in a similar story in Newsday. Primack's concerns about
the hazards of space debris were featured last year in an article in the
Wall Street Journal. . . . A cover story in the February issue
of National Geographic magazine about astronomers' efforts to understand
the formation of the first galaxies includes a section on Sandra Faber,
University Professor of astronomy and astrophysics, and the state-of-the-art
spectrograph DEIMOS that she designed for the Keck Observatory in Hawaii.
. . . American studies professor Judy Yung was quoted in
the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel about the persistence of racial
epithets against Japanese Americans. . . . Anthropologist Alison
Galloway appeared on the Discovery Channels New Detectives
program about forensic science. . . . Propaganda expert Anthony
Pratkanis of psychology continues to be in demand, fielding recent
calls about war propaganda from abcnews.com and foxnews.com.
. . . Research by Russell Flegal, professor of environmental toxicology,
and graduate student Douglas Steding on mercury contamination of
rainwater was covered in U.S. News & World Report and NASA's
Earth Observatory News. . . . Manuel Pastor of Latin American
and Latino studies was tapped by the New York Times for comment
on the economic downturn and the loss of jobs in Silicon Valley. . . .
The Wichita Eagle mentioned economist Lori Kletzer's research
on NAFTA and job displacement in an article about the 10-year anniversary
of the trade pact. . . . Reuters and KCBS Radio were among the media outlets
that covered new research by psychology's Cam Leaper and UCSC grad
Harriet Tenenbaum that documented the effect of parental attitudes on
girls' interest--and performance--in science. The American Psychological
Association also posted the story on its widely read PsychPort.com
web site that features stories related to psychology. . . . Chris Le
Maistre, managing director of the Center for Adaptive Optics, and
Claire Max, professor of astronomy and astrophysics, were quoted
in recent stories about the use of adaptive optics in vision science--Le
Maistre in an Associated Press story and Max in the Indianapolis Star.
. . . Research led by Andrew Fisher, associate professor of Earth
sciences, on the circulation of ocean water through the seafloor was covered
in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Portland Oregonian, ScienceNow and
Science Daily web sites, and the UPI wire service. Fisher also
fielded calls from the Ottawa Citizen, National Post of Canada,
and the TV program National Geographic Today. . . . Assistant professor
of computer science Scott Brandt was featured in an article in
Computerworld about the promise of "smart arrays" for
data storage. . . . The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel described the
work of poet/novelist and professor of literature Nathaniel Mackey
in an article about the citys African American performing arts groups.
. . . An editorial about President Bushs State of the Union address
by Kresge provost Conn Hallinan appeared in the Baltimore Sun.
. . . The New Orleans Times-Picayune ran an article about history
of consciousness professor Angela Davis and her critique of the
U.S. prison system. . . . The New York Times published an article
about an online exhibition of nine new Internet-based artworks featuring
assistant professor of film and digital media Warren Sack, who
explained how his exhibit argues against the Internet's utopian promise.
. . . Ellen Moir of the New Teacher Center was tapped by the Times
Educational Supplement for comment on the wave of professionals making
career changes and becoming teachers in the wake of the September 11 terrorist
attacks. . . . The St. Louis Post-Dispatch ran a story in
its travel section about the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. The center's
director Julie Barrett Heffington was quoted in the story.
State and regional
History of consciousness professor Barbara Epstein was quoted in
a San Francisco Chronicle article about peace march vandalism, as
well as in a San Jose Mercury News article about the Internets
effect on the antiwar movement. . . . The work of Tricia Rose, professor
of American studies, was cited in a San Francisco Chronicle review
of a new book describing how rap music has displaced the civil rights movement.
. . . Steve Kang, dean of the Baskin School of Engineering, was quoted
in the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal in a story about
job prospects for engineers. Kang also wrote a commentary for the Journal
on the goals of the Silicon Valley Engineering Council, of which he is president.
. . . The Los Angeles Times cited professor of womens studies
Bettina Aptheker and ran a photo of her in an article about the antiwar
movement. . . . Ellen Moir of the New Teacher Center was quoted in
a San Jose Mercury News story about the risk of layoff facing some
Silicon Valley new teachers. . . . UCSC professor of American studies
Tricia Rose was quoted in the Sacramento Bee about cultural scholar
Michael Eric Dysons new book, Why I Love Black Women.
Local
The Santa Cruz Sentinel published an extensive full-page profile
of theater arts assistant professor Alma Martinez. . . . Psychology
grad student Susan Greene was featured in a Santa Cruz Sentinel
story about her work with local women inmates, and she was interviewed
by radio stations KSCO and KZSC. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel
ran a feature article about David Swanger, professor of education
and creative writing, who recently donated a collection of letters from
renowned American short story writer (and former UCSC instructor) Raymond
Carver to the librarys Special Collections. . . . Professor of Earth
sciences Gary Griggs was quoted in an article on shoreline erosion
in the Monterey County Herald. . . . Anthropologist Hugh Raffles
appeared on KSCO Radio, discussing his new book about the Amazon, which
was also featured on the Micromedex web site. . . . The Santa Cruz
Sentinel published a lengthy story about Jim Leap and the Center
for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems, focusing on the research
contributions the facility makes to the fast-growing organic food industry.
. . . Hydrogeologist Andrew Fisher was interviewed for a story
about seawater intrusion in Pajaro Valley that aired on KUSP Radio's Talk
of the Bay program. . . . Paul Ortiz of community studies was
profiled in the Santa Cruz Sentinel as part of its coverage of
the antiwar resolution Ortiz had put before the Academic Senate. Ortiz
was also quoted in a Sentinel story about street theater as a form
of democratic expression. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel ran a story
about assistant professor of literature Jody Greene linking Santa
Cruz to the first-ever international theater event for peace by staging
a local reading of the Greek antiwar comedyLysistrata. . . . Political
scientists Ronnie Gruhn and Ronnie Lipschutz joined historian
Peter Kenez for a panel discussion on KUSP Radio about the U.S.
conflict with Iraq. . . . The Santa Cruz Sentinel featured an article
about award-winning author and journalist Barbara Ehrenreich, who presented
a free public lecture as the first distinguished visitor sponsored by
the new Institute for Advanced Feminist Research at UCSC.
