“Symphonies and Suites”

A dual concert by UCSC's dynamic Wind Ensemble and the UCSC Big Band. Directed by Dr. Robert Kleven.
The Wind Ensemble will perform:
Alexander Arutiunian's Trumpet Concerto (arr. by Guy Duker for Wind Band)
Featuring a special guest performance by UCSC Trumpet Instructor Richard Roper
Based on Armenian motifs and folk tunes, the Trumpet Concerto was written in 1950 and is the most widely performed of Arutiunian's works
West Point Symphony by Morton Gould
An original work for wind band composed in 1952 and premiered by the United States Military Band that same year.
Symphonic Songs for Band by Robert Russell Bennett
written in 1957 was the second major work written specifically for wind band.
The UCSC Big Band will perform:
"Kansas City Suite"
the historical ten-movement work composed and arranged for the Count Basie Orchestra by the legendary Benny Carter
