Staged reading: “Insufficiency”
A new play by Carl Djerassi
01/31/2013 Thursday 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
A staged reading of a new comedy of scientific manners, mystery, and suspense
Carl Djerassi is best known as ‘The Father’ of the contraceptive pill. His many compelling science-in-theater plays have been translated into 20 languages and given over 100 productions around the world. He is professor emeritus at Stanford University.
Directed by UCSC Theater Arts professor Patty Gallagher
Polish chemist Jerzy Krzyz has an unusual scientific speciality. Bubbleology. (Yes, it’s a serious scientific subject!) Newly arrived at an American university, he is determined to secure a permanent post, but the other academics dismiss him and his subject, blocking his appointment. Their rivalry gets out of hand when he gives two colleagues some experimental champagne — with deadly consequences. Was it an accident… or revenge?
