“Uplift Cinema: African American Filmmaking North and South, 1909-1915”

Allyson Nadia Field is Assistant Professor of Cinema and Media Studies at UCLA’s Department of Film, Television and Digital Media and a faculty affiliate of the Moving Image Archive Studies program and the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA. Dr Field’s research focuses on race and ethnicity in American film. Her work includes participation with UCLA’s recent preservation of the films of the "L.A. Rebellion" (1970s-1990s) and co-curating a major film exhibition of this work with the UCLA Film & Television Archive. With Jan-Christopher Horak and Jacqueline Stewart, she is editing a book on the group titled "To Emancipate the Image: The L.A. Rebellion of Black Filmmakers." She received a Masters in Film and Television Studies from the Universiteit van Amsterdam and a PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard University.
