This event has been cancelled.

Paul Lubeck, scholar of Islamic social movements

Tuesday, November 6, from 12 to 1 p.m. in the McHenry Library Staff Room

Paul Lubeck, professor of sociology and director of the Global Information Internship Program and the Center for Global, International and Regional Studies at UCSC, will be a guest speaker in the library. Lubeck is a scholar of Islamic social movements and will answer questions and share information on Islam and the Muslim societies.

He and another UCSC professor have recently received a Carnegie Corporation grant of nearly $240,000 to examine the ways in which Islamic social movements are challenging existing states and the continued expansion of economic globalization. While serving in the Peace Corps, he specialized in fieldwork in Muslim societies in Niger, Nigeria, Ghana, Mexico and most recently, Malaysia. One of his long-standing research interests focuses on the relationship between globalization processes and the Islamic revival in urban-industrial contexts.

This event is presented by the Library Cultural Diversity Committee.
