John Borrego of community studies was interviewed by an Associated Press reporter following the UFW's recent defeat, and the story appeared in dozens of papers, including the Seattle Times, Oakland Tribune, Riverside Enterprise, Stockton Record, Santa Rosa Press Democrat, Long Beach Press Telegram, and the Orange County Register. Borrego was also quoted in a UFW story in La Opinion, the Spanish-language daily published in Los Angeles. . . . Also weighing in on the UFW's fate was Manuel Pastor of Latin American and Latino studies, who spoke with the San Francisco Chronicle.
A New York Times story on "Super Max" (maximum security) prisons turned to hist. con.'s Angela Davis for insight on the effectiveness of these high security facilities that systematically keep prisoners in isolation for up to 23 hours a day. Davis told the reporter that such facilities are a throwback to the penitentiaries of the early 19th century.
Physicist Robert Johnson and his colleagues in the Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics were featured in an article in the Santa Cruz County Sentinel describing their work on NASA's Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST). Physicist Joel Primack and astronomer Sandra Faber were also quoted in the article.
Composer David Cope received more attention for Experiments in Musical Intelligence, a computer program he invented that composes its own music. Stories on his work appeared in both USA Today and in a segment on Good Morning America.
San Francisco's Bay Area Reporter recently wrote a feature on the book Lou Harrison: Composing a World, written by musicologists Leta Miller and Fredric Lieberman. The review, which goes into Harrison's work in some depth, describes the book as engaging and notes that "although some of the musical intricacies in Harrison's work may be of interest primarily to specialists, the authors manage to make this information readable and fascinating, too."
Educational software created by professor emeritus of mathematics Ed Landesman will be used in three Santa Cruz County middle schools in a program designed to help improve student achievement in math, according to an article in the Santa Cruz County Sentinel.
