Professor emeritus of ocean sciences Robert Garrison has been awarded the Francis J. Pettijohn Medal for 2000 by the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM). The Pettijohn Medal, one of the SEPM's highest distinctions, recognizes outstanding contributions in sedimentary geology, including all aspects of sedimentology and stratigraphy.
Garrison's research interests include deep water marine sediments; sediment deposits on the ocean floor as a record of global climate change over long periods of geologic history; and natural resources and economic development, especially in emerging nations.
Garrison will formally receive the medal in New Orleans next year at the SEPM National Meeting in April.
