UCSC undergrads honored in events and ceremonies during Student Achievement Week

Hundreds of students will be honored for their outstanding work in research and academic achievement during UCSC's Student Achievement Week, which takes place May 30 to June 2. The weeklong celebration culminates in an awards ceremony on Friday June 2, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at University House.

Jennifer Cuzens presented her research at last year's Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium. Cuzens, a biochemistry and molecular biology major, won an award for special merit for her poster.

Students will be presenting their work throughout the week at a variety of public events, including art exhibitions, performances, and research presentations.

The following is a list of events taking place during Student Achievement Week. Most events are free, and all are open to the public. For more information, call the number provided with each listing.

Tuesday, May 30

"Illustrating Nature," an exhibit by science illustration students in the Science Communication Program. Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, 1305 East Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through June 4. (831) 420-6115.

The Irwin Show 2000, featuring recent work by visual art students who are recipients of the Irwin Scholarship. The Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery, noon to 5 p.m. daily through Saturday, June 10. (831) 459-3606.

Wednesday, May 31

Thursday, June 1

Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium, featuring research projects conducted by students in the Division of Natural Sciences and the Jack Baskin School of Engineering. Thimann Courtyard, 3 to 6 p.m. (831) 459-3487.

Politics undergraduates present projects and papers undertaken as independent study assignments. Charles E. Merrill Lounge, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

FMP Undergraduate Research Colloquium, featuring research projects by students in the Faculty Mentor Program (FMP), a two-quarter undergraduate research program designed to encourage and prepare Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students to pursue graduate studies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Wayang Dance Class, Theater Arts Department, presents Lutung Kasarung, a dance drama in the Sundanese style of Indonesia, and Islamic dance and chant of the North Coast in choreography by internationally acclaimed artist Arawati Durbar Argo.
