Student Corps offers temporary staffing service

Does your busy unit have a short-term task requiring a quick turnaround? Student Corps may be the solution.

The Student Corps program provides a temporary student staffing service to the campus community. Student workers do clerical office work, reception and telephone work, sorting mail, preparing bulk mail, packet assembly, stuffing envelopes, shredding, archiving, tape recording, posting flyers, database entry, transcription, translation, testing equipment, event setup, ushering, campus deliveries, driving, traffic control, moving, and a host of other tasks.

Student workers are hired and trained by the Career Center. The cost is $11/hour. For more information or to download a job request form (pdf), go to the Student Corps web site.

Learn African dance, hand drumming

The Recreation Department is offering classes suited to every interest. A sampling of current classes is listed below. To see the complete list of offerings, go to the Recreation Department web site. To register, stop by the Recreation Office (East Field House) or call (831) 459-2806 to register over the phone. Advance sign ups recommended but you can sign up at the door if there is space available.

West African Traditional Dance, taught by Mandjou Kone, who is originally from Mali, focusing on traditional dances of her native land. Mondays, October 6 through November 10, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room at the East Field House. $30.

Hand Drumming, with Don Davidson. In an ensemble setting, learn basic drumming skills, the language of rhythm, and a knowledge of drumming culture and the music of the African Diaspora. Drums provided. Class 1: Wednesdays, October 8-November 12 , from 4:30 to 6 p.m.; Class 2: Thursdays, October 9- November 13, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Class meets at the large oak above the Wellness Center. $45.

Santa Cruz residents now have better access to UCTV

Santa Cruz residents now can enjoy more of UCTV’s diverse lifelong learning opportunities on Santa Cruz Community Television channel 25 and channel 26 (Comcast). On channel 25, viewers can tune in to UCTV programming every morning and take in UCTV’s "Best of the Week" lineup every Sunday evening at 8 p.m. UCTV will also debut on local channel 26 every Saturday evening at 8 p.m. with a presentation of fine arts and music programming for all to enjoy. Tune in to the UC Santa Cruz-produced program "Lick Observatory: Over 100 Years of Discovery" on Saturday, October 25, at 8:30 a.m. This half-hour program provides viewers with an insider’s tour of Mt. Hamilton’s major telescopes, including talks with Lick's astronomers and astrophysicists about the Observatory's remarkable accomplishments--from early discoveries to modern-day research. UCSC and San Jose State to collaborate in printmaking exhibition

Artwork by UCSC master printer Paul Rangell will be displayed at an exhibit at San Jose State.

UCSC and San Jose State University will collaborate in a printmaking exhibition titled "Highway 17 Express: Multiple Runs" through November 1 at Works Gallery in San Jose (30 N. 3rd Street). The show skillfully blends the work of established faculty and alumni with the talent of emerging students.

In addition to the exhibition, UCSC’s master printer Paul Rangell and visual arts lecturer Richard Wohlfeiler will join SJSU’s art and design professors, Erin Goodwin-Guerrero and Patrick Surgalski, for a lecture on October 14, discussing historical printmaking techniques, postmodern "anything goes" trends, and the future of digital printmaking and cyberspace. This event will take place at San Jose State from 5 to 7 p.m. in Room 135 of the Art Building. Volunteer at the Salinas air show and get in free

The California International Air Show, which will be held in Salinas October 17, 18, and 19, is looking for UCSC volunteers to supervise high school students directing parking. Volunteers will receive a free pass to see the USAF Thunderbirds and other top aerobatic acts, along with parking, lunch, and entry to sponsor/volunteer parties.

Proceeds from the air show benefit many community organizations, including Meals on Wheels, American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Society, American Heart Association, YMCA, YWCA of Salinas and Watsonville, Shelter Outreach Plus (IHELP -Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program), and
Boys and Girls Clubs of the Salinas Valley and Monterey Peninsula.

Women's Center to host annual fall open house and artist's reception

The UCSC Women's Center is celebrating its Annual Fall Open House and Artist's Reception on October 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. The event features Santa Cruz artist Janet Lever-Wood, whose clay sculptures are now on display at the Women's Center. The title of the exhibit is "Vessels and Sculpture: Clay Work from a Spiritual Terrain."

Lever-Wood's work includes large figurative pieces as well as smaller ceremonial vessels. Her sculptures are formed with a variety of hand-building processes and are high-fired to 2,350 degrees to become stone.

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. The UCSC Women's Center sponsors a variety of workshops, hands-on activities, student art exhibits, and speakers throughout the year.
