Ortiz, assistant professor of community studies, authored an essay that
appears in the new book The
Human Cost of Food: Farmworkers' Lives, Labor, and Advocacy
(Austin; University of Texas Press, 2002). Ortiz's chapter is titled "From Slavery to Cesar Chavez and Beyond: Farmworker Organizing in the United States." Edited by Charles D. Thompson Jr. and Melinda F. Wiggins, the book "seeks to end the public's ignorance and improve workers' living and working conditions" by addressing the major factors that affect farmworkers' lives and offering practical strategies for action on farmworker issues. |
