Second Harvest Food Bank supports a network of approximately 100 human service agencies and programs that serve more than 36,000 people every month--48 percent are children. Visit the Second Harvest Food Bank web site

Limited counseling and psychological services during the quarter breakThere will be some limited daytime services provided by Counseling & Psychological Services during the quarter break. After December 6, the services provided will be consultation to staff and faculty regarding any concerns about the mental health of students. Students who reside on-campus all year, such as those in the Family Student Housing apartments and some graduate students, are seen by a half-time CPS counseling psychologist whose office is located in the Family Student Housing complex. No services are provided by counseling psychologists to undergraduate students in the colleges during the winter break. Counseling & Psychological Services will begin regular appointments for all students on Wednesday, January 2. Night and weekend psychological crisis coverage by the Residential Crisis Program (RCP) will resume on January 2 as well. In the event that a student should require psychological assistance, community
resources are available. The crisis intervention team at Dominican Hospital can be
called at (831) 462-7719 to advise on the need for psychiatric hospitalization. For
consultation and referral information, contact Counseling & Psychological Services
at (831) 459-2628; a list of major community resources with telephone numbers is
available. VC for Research Robert Miller to represent UCSC on biotech outreach panelVice Chancellor for Research Robert Miller will be a panelist at the City of San Jose's Biotech Outreach Programme on December 13. Organized by the San Jose Redevelopment Agency in partnership with the Bay Area Bioscience Center, the program is intended to attract the biotech industry to San Jose. Miller will tell industry representatives about UCSC's undergraduate and graduate programs in bioscience, especially as they relate to careers in biotech. First Night Santa Cruz volunteers sought
For a three- to four-hour commitment, volunteers receive a blinking admission
button. Area and site managers and other volunteers who work more than eight hours
on the day of the event will also receive a "Friends of First Night" shirt
and an invitation to a thank-you party in January. The first
20 UC Santa Cruz staff, faculty, and students who volunteer for First Night will
receive an additional free First Night button. For more information or to

with the campus for your additional free button. BAS looking for feedback from customersBusiness and Administrative Services (BAS) is launching its second biennial customer
satisfaction survey this week. As with its first survey in 1999, BAS is asking faculty
and staff for feedback on the interactions they've had with any and all BAS units
and subunits in the past 12 months. The survey will run for two weeks, closing at
5 p.m. on Friday, December 14.
To participate in the survey, go to the BAS
Performance Measurement web site and click on "Customer Satisfaction"
to start the process. (The results of the 1999 customer satisfaction survey, as well
as a list of changes made as a result of that survey, can also be found there.) Initial
analysis of the survey results will be available at the Customer Satisfaction web

all stock in the General Book Department. This sale runs through December 21 when
the campus closes. Special-order books and course books are excluded from this sale.
In addition, the Bay Tree Bookstore is hosting a Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day on
Wednesday, December 12, from noon to 5:30 p.m. All gift items--including Slug apparel,
imprinted candy items, and ornaments--will be 20 percent off for the event. Light
refreshments will be served. Have your faculty/staff ID available. For more information,
call (831) 459-4544. UCSC Fire Department collecting toys for needy childrenThe UCSC Fire Department will be collecting new unwrapped toys for local needy
children during the holiday season. Toys may be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 5
p.m., Monday through Friday, at the campus Fire Station on Chinquapin Road, across
from the Crown/Merrill Apartments, or at the campus Police Station in the H Barn

459-3473. Campus closure reminderThe winter campus closure begins Saturday, December 22, and continues through Tuesday, January 1. In all, the campus will be closed for 11 days: four days are scheduled holidays (December 24, 25, and 31 and January 1), four are weekend days, and three days are designated workdays. To cover these three workdays, full-time staff employees are required to use 24 hours of vacation, compensatory time off, or leave without pay. More information about campus closure policies may be found on the Staff Human Resources web site. The campus community is reminded to turn off lights, shut down computers and other office equipment, and close exterior windows before leaving for the break. Some campus offices will be open and essential services will be provided during
