There's still time to help "Fill the Bus or Write a Check" for the Second Harvest Food Bank Holiday Food Drive on campus. A Metro bus will stop on campus on Friday, December 14, to make the final collection. Cash donations are especially welcome--for every dollar donated, Second Harvest can get $10 worth of food.

Second Harvest Food Bank supports a network of approximately 100 human service agencies and programs that serve more than 36,000 people every month--48 percent are children.

Visit the Second Harvest Food Bank web site to learn more about how your contribution makes a difference.

Limited counseling and psychological services during the quarter break

There will be some limited daytime services provided by Counseling & Psychological Services during the quarter break. After December 6, the services provided will be consultation to staff and faculty regarding any concerns about the mental health of students. Students who reside on-campus all year, such as those in the Family Student Housing apartments and some graduate students, are seen by a half-time CPS counseling psychologist whose office is located in the Family Student Housing complex.

No services are provided by counseling psychologists to undergraduate students in the colleges during the winter break. Counseling & Psychological Services will begin regular appointments for all students on Wednesday, January 2. Night and weekend psychological crisis coverage by the Residential Crisis Program (RCP) will resume on January 2 as well.

In the event that a student should require psychological assistance, community resources are available. The crisis intervention team at Dominican Hospital can be called at (831) 462-7719 to advise on the need for psychiatric hospitalization. For consultation and referral information, contact Counseling & Psychological Services at (831) 459-2628; a list of major community resources with telephone numbers is available.

VC for Research Robert Miller to represent UCSC on biotech outreach panel

Vice Chancellor for Research Robert Miller will be a panelist at the City of San Jose's Biotech Outreach Programme on December 13. Organized by the San Jose Redevelopment Agency in partnership with the Bay Area Bioscience Center, the program is intended to attract the biotech industry to San Jose. Miller will tell industry representatives about UCSC's undergraduate and graduate programs in bioscience, especially as they relate to careers in biotech.

First Night Santa Cruz volunteers sought

This New Year's Eve, for the sixth consecutive year, UCSC is the official First Night Santa Cruz Volunteer Sponsor. First Night is one of Santa Cruz County's most popular cultural events, drawing more than 30,000 people downtown to celebrate New Year's Eve at performances and arts activities with their families and friends. Six hundred volunteers are needed to make this event happen and the campus is encouraged to participate.

For a three- to four-hour commitment, volunteers receive a blinking admission button. Area and site managers and other volunteers who work more than eight hours on the day of the event will also receive a "Friends of First Night" shirt and an invitation to a thank-you party in January. The first 20 UC Santa Cruz staff, faculty, and students who volunteer for First Night will receive an additional free First Night button. For more information or to volunteer, call (831) 425-7277 or visit the First Night Santa Cruz web site and mention that you are with the campus for your additional free button.

BAS looking for feedback from customers

Business and Administrative Services (BAS) is launching its second biennial customer satisfaction survey this week. As with its first survey in 1999, BAS is asking faculty and staff for feedback on the interactions they've had with any and all BAS units and subunits in the past 12 months. The survey will run for two weeks, closing at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 14.

BAS is using a web-based survey this year, and it is divided up into five "mini" surveys, each made up of two or more BAS units:

  • Financial Affairs and Computing and Technology Services (CATS)
  • Materiel Management and Imaging, Printing, Mail and Temporary Services (IPMTS)
  • Physical Plant and Physical Planning and Construction (PP& C)
  • Police, Fire, Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and Transportation and Parking Services (TAPS)
  • Staff Human Resources, Internal Audit, and Office of Planning and Analysis (OPA)

To participate in the survey, go to the BAS Performance Measurement web site and click on "Customer Satisfaction" to start the process. (The results of the 1999 customer satisfaction survey, as well as a list of changes made as a result of that survey, can also be found there.) Initial analysis of the survey results will be available at the Customer Satisfaction web site in mid-January. For more information, contact Susan Willats, manager of management initiatives, at (831) 459-3759 or willats@cats.ucsc.edu.

Campus closure reminder

The winter campus closure begins Saturday, December 22, and continues through Tuesday, January 1. In all, the campus will be closed for 11 days: four days are scheduled holidays (December 24, 25, and 31 and January 1), four are weekend days, and three days are designated workdays. To cover these three workdays, full-time staff employees are required to use 24 hours of vacation, compensatory time off, or leave without pay. More information about campus closure policies may be found on the Staff Human Resources web site.

The campus community is reminded to turn off lights, shut down computers and other office equipment, and close exterior windows before leaving for the break.

Some campus offices will be open and essential services will be provided during the campus closure. For more information on facilities-related matters, contact Physical Plant at (831) 429-3447 (memo from Ilse Kolbus, acting director, Physical Plant).
