An EIR Scoping Meeting for the Long Marine Laboratory (LML) Coastal Long Range Development Plan (CLRDP) project will be held on Wednesday, November 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center.

The CLRDP includes project goals, a description of the project program and space requirements, planning principles, a land use plan and illustrative concept plan, and plans and policies to provide for the physical development of LML over the next 20 years. At this meeting, public agencies and members of the public are invited to provide oral comments on the range of issues to be addressed in the Draft EIR. Parking will be available at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center Parking Lot. Just in time for the holidays, the Arboretum is holding its annual Dried Flower and Succulent Sale this Saturday and Sunday, November 10 and 11. Exotic dried flower arrangements, living succulent wreaths, rare and unusual succulent plants, and materials for making your own gifts are among the offerings at this year's sale.

Dried flowers and foliages will be available singly, by the bunch, and in arrangements. Many different kinds of wreaths will be available, some featuring unusual cones and spiral shapes from plants in the protea family and others made of colorful dried perennials and herbs. The Arboretum's extensive collections of South African and Australian plants provide a variety of unusual dried plant materials for use in wreaths and arrangements.

Sale hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Horticulture Building in the Arboretum. The Dried Flower and Succulent Sale is an all-volunteer effort featuring materials grown at the Arboretum or donated by volunteers. All proceeds benefit the Arboretum.

UC Digital Arts Research Network hosts international conference

The UC Digital Arts Research Network (UC DARNet), a Multi-Campus Research Group funded by the UC Office of the President, is hosting an international conference and series of exploratory workshops November 8 at UCSC, and November 13 and 14 at UCLA and UC Irvine.

The event is titled 9/11-N2N, Networks to Nanosystems: Art, Science and Technology in Times of Crisis, a series of digitally mediated dialogues. The focus of the conference is on how artists, humanists, and scientists can collaborate productively as they encounter the long-term consequences of the events of September 11 in the UC system, the state, the nation, and the international community.

The UCSC component of the conference will take place at the Baytree Bookstore, Conference Room D, on the third floor. The morning session will focus on the topic "Emergent Systems" (9 a.m. to noon), and the afternoon session is titled "Metaphoric Mappings" (2 p.m.to 5 p.m.). At each session, a moderated "round-table" discussion will be held among invited participants. For a full description of the conference and the schedule of sessions, visit the conference web site.

James Luna will perform with the Rez Band on Thursday, November 8, at 8 p.m. in the Porter Dining Hall. Luna, a Native American artist, uses performance and installation to educate audiences about multiculturalism and how it affects all people. In these media, he makes connections to contemporary Indian lifestyles and traditions of ceremony, dance, and storytelling. By connecting Indian culture to the outside world through his art, Luna focuses on difficult subjects that directly affect his community--alcohol and drug abuse, crime, lack of education, unemployment, and loss of cultural identity. Admission is free with a UCSC student, faculty, or staff ID; general admission is $5. For more information, call (831) 459-5667.

In addition to this performance, James Luna will also be on campus for a four-day residency, which will include workshops and in-class art critiques.
