Student Achievement Week to honor hundreds

Hundreds of UCSC students will be honored for their outstanding research and academic achievement during the campus's annual Student Achievement Week, which takes place May 27 through June 1.

"UCSC is known for having a faculty committed to working with undergraduates," said Lynda Goff, vice provost and dean of undergraduate education and a professor of biology.

"But we are also able to offer our students the resources and experiences of a major research university. It's a unique combination, and the evidence of our success can be seen throughout Student Achievement Week in the many events demonstrating the exceptional work of our students."

A preview event is the Linguistics and Language Studies Annual Undergraduate Conference, which takes place Friday, May 24, at the Cowell College Conference Room from 3:30 to 5:50 p.m. Call (831) 459-4988 for more information.

The following is a list of events taking place during Student Achievement Week. All events are open to the public; for more information, call the number provided with each listing.

Tuesday, May 28

"Illustrating Nature," an exhibit by illustration students in the Science Communication Program. Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, 1305 East Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Mondays through June 9. (831) 420-6115.

Irwin Scholars 2002, featuring recent work by visual art students who are recipients of the Irwin Scholarship Awards. The Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery, noon to 5 p.m., Tuesdays to Saturdays through June 8. (831) 459-3606.

Thursday, May 30

FMP Undergraduate Research Colloquium, featuring research projects by students in the Faculty Mentor Program (FMP), a two-quarter program designed to encourage and prepare Educational Opportunity Programs students to pursue graduate studies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium, featuring research projects conducted by students in the Division of Natural Sciences and the Jack Baskin School of Engineering. Thimann Lab Courtyard, 3 to 5:30 p.m. (831) 459-3487.

The Music Department presents two one-act operas, Gianni Schicchi by Puccini and The Medium by Menotti. Music Center Recital Hall. Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. $15 general, $12 seniors, $8 students. (831) 459-2159.

Friday, May 31

Open Studios, an exhibition featuring prints, paintings, drawings, sculptures, intermedia artwork, electronic art, and photography. Works will be on display in the studios and courtyard of the Elena Baskin Visual Arts Center from noon to 4 p.m. (831) 459-2272.

Photography Sale, featuring color, black and white, polaroid transfer, and alternative methods of photographic printing including van dyke and cyanotype printing. Baskin Visual Arts Quad, noon to 6 p.m. (831) 459-2282.

Print Sale, featuring etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, and handmade books. Through Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Printmaking Studio, Room G-101 at Baskin Visual Arts Center. Free parking is available during the Saturday sale. (831) 459-3686.
