July 17, 2000 Making the News The New York Times turned to Francisco Hernandez for comment on the effectiveness of advanced placement courses offered online to high school students. The San Francisco Chronicle and the Santa Cruz Sentinel ran stories about the web site where researchers in the Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering have posted the working draft of the human genome sequence. Quoted in the articles were professor of computer science David Haussler, associate professor of biology Alan Zahler, and graduate student Jim Kent. The Santa Cruz Sentinel sent a reporter and photographer to camp--the UCSC Farm's Wildlands and Watering Cans summer camp, that is. The story dominated the paper's weekly education page. . . . And a KION-TV team headed to the LASERS summer academy at a Salinas elementary school where students were learning English while exploring garden-based science projects. Jim Gill, professor of earth sciences and associate vice chancellor for research, was quoted in an article in the Monterey County Herald on the long-term results of the National Ocean Conference held two years ago in Monterey. Gill chairs the Monterey Bay Crescent Ocean Research Consortium, a group formed at the time of the conference to coordinate the activities of the area's many ocean research institutions. The Lindsay Gazette profiled five local high school students who were headed to UC's summer COSMOS programs for high-achieving math and science students. The Riverside Press Enterprise covered a UC Riverside panel discussion about "Race and the Jury" with sociologist Hiroshi Fukurai. Seymour Center director Julie Barrett Heffington was interviewed by KSTS (Channel 48) for a story about summer visitor destinations. Persuasion expert Anthony Pratkanis of psychology was quoted in the Los Angeles Times giving advice to presidential hopefuls on how to convey sincerity to prospective voters. His suggestion: Only talk about a few issues to convey consistency. The Santa Rosa Press Democrat profiled Keith Abeles, a graduate of the apprenticeship in ecological horticulture who is working to preserve Sonoma County's ranches and farms as the area becomes increasingly urbanized. Anthropologist Adrienne Zihlman was interviewed by Der Spiegel, the German weekly newsmagazine, for their coverage of Natalie Angier's new book on female physiology. An article in USA Today about coastal development and erosion hazards quoted Gary Griggs, professor of earth sciences and director of the Institute of Marine Sciences. The UC College Prep Initiative's Beatrice Easter was quoted in the Livermore Independent about the goals of that program.
