Residents of Santa Cruz, including students, faculty, and staff who live on campus, are now participating in a water-reduction plan that took effect on May 1, 2009. The plan remains in effect through October 2009. Details of the reduction, required because of several years of less-than-needed rainfall, have been posted on the city's Water Department web site.

UCSC is committed to water conservation and has established a campuswide Water-Use Curtailment Task Force to evaluate current usage, examine strategies to reduce water use, and ensure compliance with water restrictions for the drought emergency in 2009.

A 2007 water audit and inventory of UCSC facilities and plumbing fixtures identified several potential water saving projects. UCSC has been implementing those projects, identified as high priority in the Water Efficiency Survey over the past year. [See story and final audit]
