Policy on the Establishment of Web Server Names in UCSC Domain

The use of Web Server Names (e.g., unitname.ucsc.edu) in the UCSC domain is regulated by the campus's Public Affairs and Information Technology Services units. Public Affairs has the authority to authorize, deny, or reclaim the use of Web Server Names; ITS is the unit that implements those decisions. This Web Server Name policy was developed by the campus's Web and Portal Readiness Committee in recognition of three principles:

  • Permission to use a UCSC Web Server Name should generally be granted only to meet campuswide strategic communication objectives.
  • Creating and maintaining Web Server Names require a commitment of ITS resources, so assignments should be made only to meet such communication objectives.
  • All promoted UCSC Web Server Names should take visitors to sites that are in compliance with UCSC web publishing guidelines.

The following Web Server Name policy outlines the names that are permissible and those that are not. It also describes the type of requests that may be considered.

Web Server Names are automatically granted for the following uses:

Web Server Names may be granted for the following uses:

  • Well-established research centers or other activity centers (e.g., seymourcenter.ucsc.edu). These requests must be approved by Public Affairs.
  • Functional names (e.g., press.ucsc.edu). These requests must be approved by Public Affairs.

Web Server Names will not granted for the following uses:
